AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Gov. Angus King is taking exception to charges by some gubernatorial candidates that he's led a state government that spends beyond its means.
''I'm not going to get into a debate with the candidates. They have to make their points,'' King said during a recent interview. ''But I'm going to defend the record we have achieved.''

New King budget plan revamps BETR payment schedule/Maine
Forecasters fix size of shortfall; King to meet with legislative leaders
A state panel of fiscal experts agreed Wednesday that Maine's budget shortfall is around $240 million, setting the stage for a much anticipated meeting between Gov. Angus King and legislative leaders to discuss how to handle the gap.
It's Broke/Maine's Budget
Pet projects might get deleted, plans already made would have to be altered, expectations might get dashed.
When anguish decided to give laptops to 7th graders, and the legislature went along with it, decided to leave the state for the time being.
Of course, the maniacs are getting what they deserve after all if you look at their top tier politicians they are all tax and spend liberals.
King reluctantly plans shutdown/Furlough days, education cut to help balance budget
Like we told our TN legislators, NO DOGS, NO CATS, NO INCOME TAX. (dogs and cats are to budget/tax increases). IF YOU CAN'T FIND PORK TO CUT THEN SHUT IT DOWN!
Thats because the granite steps will be heated to keep them warm and free of ice and snow. But the steps come with a price tag: $250,000.
But the generosity of Apple and other private sources depends upon Maine keeping its end of the bargain and that is in doubt. The $50 million originally set aside for this program was pared down to $30 million by lawmakers last spring. Now, with the economy in recession and the state facing projected a two-year revenue shortfall of $200 million or more, many legislators are eyeing the remainder of the technology fund to balance the budget.
The $20 million raid the Legislature made upon the technology fund last spring already has had repercussions. The matching grants from foundations and business have been slow to materialize because benefactors are reluctant to give when the recipient is so obviously afflicted with cold feet. There certainly will be no grants to Maine if the money is perceived as merely replacing money the state refuses to invest in itself.
Workers try to finish State House renovation
One likely target is the state Rainy Day Fund, which holds slightly more than $100 million in uncommitted money.
King eyes action on deficit
Deficit could exceed $230M
Reform Taxes in Pieces
Break laptop contract
Whos paying for the teachers to learn the laptop programs? I understand one laptop was stolen already. Who pays for that?
What about reprogramming or repairs? Who replaces the old laptops with new ones?
State budget may be $25 million more in the red
King reluctantly plans shutdown
Furlough days, education cut to help balance budget
What has happened to Maine? This is the highest-taxed state in the union, one of the highest in electricity, fuel, housing and one of the lowest-paying for salaries. We both are hard-working people with good job ethics. However, what do we do now, start over at this time in our lives scrimping and saving just to make ends meet? I have always thought I would have a great life after we came home. Instead, I have to work a job that is shift work and only have one weekend day off and one other day off during the week when the company sees fit.
It is almost as though the people here are willing to be held captive. The government knows they can impose tax after tax and the general populace wont say or do anything because they love the state so much they will endure whatever is put upon them rather than move away.
King eyes tax increase as budget fix
Meeting with reporters Wednesday, Gov. Angus S. King confirmed what many Maine politicians had feared for the last two weeks: Higher taxes may be necessary to bridge a looming budget gap that could reach $180 million.
King: Maines bricks-and-mortar governor
The bills include more than $33 million for State House renovations and a new Augusta Mental Health Institute that will cost a little more than that.
Renovating the State Office Building cost more than $20 million, and several million dollars were spent to overhaul old buildings on the AMHI campus for use by several state agencies.
The biggest single package of renovations and new construction has been in the Department of Corrections, with an expansion of the Warren facility to replace the Maine State Prison as well as major renovations at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham. The Maine Youth Center in South Portland has been renovated and a new youth facility built adjacent to the correctional facility in Charleston. That totals about $160 million.
The list goes on and on.
Yes, we can view the record he has achieved alright.
Does this mean someone has taken him to task, FINALLY, about his lousy leadership?
Do you suppose Welfare payments are so high that people who pay taxes leave the state? (Hint I did).
Do you suppose that wheather is so bad people leave the state? (Hint I didn't leave because of the weather)
You know, the ones moving here because the welfare benefits in Maine are so much more generous than in Georgia.
Ahhhhhh doncha miss this at all???
I'm not really sure about this. We are way far north and but we only sees Canadians when they come over to shop.
Maine is pretty much Catholic which means Liberals. And all the Somali's they brought in to southern Maine are voting Liberal. But it's time for a big change in this state. The past 8 years should prove that to everyone who lives here.
OH YESS! Lewiston can't hold anymore. So I guess Augusta will get them. One Somali lady was living in Atlanta. She was paying over $900 a MONTH for her apartment. Her friend in Maine told her to move up here. Today, this woman is in a 3 bedroom ranch style home paying $95 dollars a month. Sure wish WE had it that good. We must be doing something wrong.............ack!
Since the Catholic Church is bringing them in, guess who they will vote for? Baldy! Do any of them speak English???
Nothing better in the world to walk out a watch sea smoke at 20 below zero.
Or how about watching it snow for three days, and enjoy not going any place or if you most knowing that there is no one else on the road.
How about driving off MDI at 2 in the morning with a full moon and looking out over the bay?
Yes my friend I miss all of that, but with the lose of a job, taxes eating me alive and family responsibliites I would still be there and I think I will be back after I retire.
Don't lose hope! We are working very hard to turn the Maine Government around to where it USED to be! So don't give up the ship! Things are looking a lot better then it used to be. What with the internet, a lot more people are being reached to be made to understand what has been going on and that it's time for a CHANGE!
Very true, although the Catholics here in New York tend to vote RINO in state and local elections.
