Klamath Co. DA to seek death penalty in nun killing

KLAMATH FALLS - The nun murdered on a bicycle path here early Sunday was strangled with her own rosary and the beads were imbedded in her neck, an autopsy revealed.

The autopsy, done in Medford on Monday by Dr. James Olson, also confirmed police reports that she had been sexually assaulted.

Klamath County district Attorney Ed Caleb says he will seek the death penalty for Maximiliano Cilerio Esparza, charged with aggravated murder and rape in the fatal attack on Sister Helen Chaska, 53, of Bellevue, Wash., and the assault on another nun who was with her.

Esparza, 32, also was charged with kidnapping, assault, sodomy, sexual abuse and possession and delivery of a controlled substance. He was being held without bail at the Klamath County Jail.

He was to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon.

Sister Chaska was reciting the rosary while walking on a bike path just after midnight Sunday when she was attacked and killed, police said. She was the first homicide victim in Klamath County this year.

A second nun was also attacked and sexually assaulted. She was treated at Merle West Medical Center and released.

The nuns were members of the order of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and both lived in Bellevue. The Archdiocese of Seattle said the order is self-identified as a congregation of orthodox Catholic sisters "not to be confused with Roman Catholic sisters in union with the Roman Catholic Church."

The house they work out of had this note posted to their door: "Please respect our desire to mourn over the loss of a dearly beloved sister in peace."

In a phone conversation with The Oregonian, the surviving nun said she has been finding comfort in prayer.

"We don't understand why what happened happened, but it's all in His plan. Whatever His reason, we'll know in eternity. It's so hard for us on earth to fathom these things."

She was treated and released at a local hospital.

The nuns had been involved with the church for the past 25 years and were in Klamath Falls doing missionary work.

Caleb said Esparza had just left "the only strip joint in Klamath Falls" before he attacked the women.

"(He) then came down there, ran into them, attacked them, beat them severely to weaken them, then proceeded to sexually assault both of them, and we believe strangle one of them," Caleb said.

"I won't say the word I've been using to describe the perpetrator, because that would not be good for children to see," Caleb said.

Stunned and upset residents placed flowers in the fence that runs along the bike path.

It was not clear what Esparza, who was staying in a Klamath Falls motel, was doing in the area.

"All we know is that he was passing through and that he came down by train from Portland," Deputy District Attorney Mike Swanson said.

You're not suggesting that were going to seek the death penalty against another Mexican citizen. Isn't that going to piss off the Mexicans. I suggest, just in case, we allow him to consult with the Mexican consulate. That way they won't accuse us of violating international law when this guy gets his just desert.

I live in Tucson, close to our border with Mexico. Previous to that I lived in Cochise County, even closer to the Border. I can tell you that the media here is so obsessed with political correctness that they don't even use the word "illegal" when they talk about crimes and accidents that these illegal aliens commit. Instead they use words like 'immigrants' or even more PC, 'border crossers'. Neither of these terms have descriptive adjectives attached to them. Our emergency rooms are overwhelmed with illegals to the point where American citizens can't get the emergency care they need. Smugglers pack ten to 20 illegals in their vehicles, then drive 100 mph, knowing that the border patrol will not pursue them for fear of causing an accident and being hounded by the liberal media for chasing after these poor people (and thus causing an accident), who, after all, are only trying to find a better way of life!

I have nothing against Mexicans, except that they have to obey our laws. I do have something against the Bush administration for not tightening up our borders, especially in light of 9-11, and also for their politically correct stance on matters ranging from airport security (Mineta's insistence on no profiling at airports) ad infinitum.

If we would stiffen and enforce the penalties for hiring these illegals, this P.O.S. would have never found his way to Klamath Falls, nor would we have an imigration problem. Try living and traveling in this country with no means of feeding yourself or buying transportation. Some cheap contractor hired him to work on some bleachers at Lost River High School. He will die unless the catholics object.

The reason the PC press won't talk about it is that they know that he is mexican. If he had been a white guy, Dan Blather would have been all over the story. This particular illegal has been deported twice.

Illegal aliens throughout the west are responsible for a very high % of drunk driving accidents where fatilities or serious injuries occur, crimes like this one and the sexual predators who prey on children will prey on little children of illegal aliens as the parents are afraid to say anything.

This predator killer's trail needs to be followed backwards to when he came into the US illegally to seen what crimes he has done. Odds are that this terrible crime was not the first one.

Of course Katz and Kitz will be right on the trail of this illegal alien predator! (yeah sure!)
