Editor's File | A letter to Coulter
Dear Ann Coulter:
You're fired.
It's not that extreme viewpoints are unwelcome on the opinion pages of the Centre Daily Times. All political viewpoints, from Cal Thomas on the right to Molly Ivins on the left, are welcome here.
But, we don't welcome haters, Ann, and that's what you are.
Well, you are either a hater or a hypocrite who calls names and spews enmity because you believe it will get your pretty face on television more or sell more copies of your best-selling books.
In either case, we won't be publishing your Friday column anymore . We decided not to publish a piece of yours a few weeks back because it was nothing more than a sexual history of some of your enemies -- i.e., private citizens who dared to give money to the Democrats.
I wrote a column about why we held the piece and told readers then that if you continued to cross the line, we'd can you.
Your Friday column, in which you declared that liberals are "no good," then trashed the entire Kennedy clan as a collection of "heroin addicts, convicted killers, cheaters, bottleggers and dissolute drunks," crossed that line. I'm not going to defend the Kennedy family or liberals; either group can argue with you if they'd like.
But, Ann, you're mean -- vicious, really -- which is why we do not believe that you in any way serve the public good.
On a late summer morning almost a year ago, all of us -- Republicans, Democrats and everyone else -- witnessed what hate is capable of.
Since that day, Americans have tried to remember that they are on the same side, regardless of differences in skin color, nation of origin, religion or political viewpoint. It has not always been easy because, more than ever, those who are different can seem more threatening. But we're trying because what we have in America is worth keeping.
And, Ann, you're not helping. You do nothing to elevate our spirits, to celebrate the great bond that holds us this unruly people together and makes us a nation.
Hate is easy; love is hard.
Our great nation gives you the freedom to hate all you want and even to make a buck off it if you can. But, even better, it gives us the right not to have to listen.
So, Ann, you're fired. I expect some of our readers are going to be mad at us over this, but we hope they'll understand that while we joyfully publish a wide spectrum of political and social viewpoints, we condemn hate where we find it.
You won't miss us much, Ann. Heck, you're rolling in money. And your fans can find your column on the Internet anyway.
We'll start looking for someone to replace you. It won't be easy because you sure are flashy and a lot of folks like flashy. But political conservatism has produced other columnists of merit whose ideas will provide subjects fit for public consumption and debate -- writers who do not believe those who disagree with them are traitors, or worse.
Sincerely,
Bob Unger, executive editor

Cowardly self-righteous passive aggressive hate is ok.
I'm not name calling and I'm a hypocrite? You've had way too much hatred for breakfast this morning.
All I said was that I can only take Ann in small doses. Jez, the world comes to an end by some people. I expressed an OPINION. I did not insult, although many on this list wanted to insult me. Yes, I find that kind of insult-ridden discussion boring. Just like what you're doing. If you want to discuss Ann's writing style in a logical manner, let me know, otherwise you're wasting my time.
Ann gets down into the trenches and fights like a man. Although I appreciate the likes of Thomas, Sowell and the other conservative writers, they do not seem to register with the average joe citizen. Ann at least pokes them in the eye with a "hey", there's something happening here that you really NEED to know and care about!
The liberals can't stand anyone shedding the light of truth on their evil UNAMERICAN ways.
Your first sentence is incomplete. It lacks both a possesive and a verb which would serve to indicate whose response, or what response it was that you were expecting.
Many actually think that literary insults is a valid writing style.
With this sentence, you display numerical disagreement. You reference multiple objects, yet endow them with action through the singular verb "is". Ironically, you did this while panning another's writing style.
I find it (and her) rather boring. Thanks for the intellectual discussion ...NOT ... bye ...
One has to know one's limitations.
Typical liberal. He calls her names.... for calling other people names. DUH!!!!!
And what are you doing ?
Answer #1: I called him a moron, not for calling names, but for his lack of logic.
Answer #2: Falling in a trap of my own making.
Tuor
I think this is absolutely untrue. It may be what people say in response to polls, but lets look at what they actually do.
Those Independents had to be the ones responsible for Clinton's sky high polls during impeachment. Who was negative and vicious? It wasn't Ken Starr, it wasn't Republicans. How many people, besides us, were really outraged by the James Byrd ads?
You make this too easy. Who was vicious and negative? Virtually all knowledgeable people, including those in GOP Leadership, admit that the impeachment process died when congress released the Starr report to the public. Once all the trash was out there, the non-ideological, i.e., the independents were turned off by the Republicans pushing the trash on them and Starr for spending his time researching all the sordid sex. The independents skipped right over the issues of law breaking because all the sex and affair crap was in their face. Especially harmful to impeachment was the video of Clinton's testimony to Starr. You may have ate it up as did I but it backfired as far as the public (and subsequently the Senate).
True in real life a mouthful is fine but if all you are getting is a picture, then you least deserve "something" to look at.
I notice however, that your only comment about Ann's writing style is to comment on mine .... Ann was the one that got fired for what she wrote, not me.
Sticking to the topic is essential for good communication. Anyone can obfuscate, even you it seems.
There is little proof of that.
Don't the truth stink!
A fatwah on you all!
I think you are missing, or devaluing, Ann's ability to reach the general populace. Your preffered writers, albeit intelligent and very talented, continually fail to affect political debate between non-intellectuals (which the majority of Americans are). Ann, however, with her biting, well researched, and plainly written style provides a large amount of information to the general conservative population (which it appears they are quite hungry for).
Additionally, it appears you disagree with the amount of "bite" she adds to her writing, however, I am glad she does it; liberal columnists to date are much worse, and liberal politicians are the PARADIGM of hypocrisy that deserve to be pilloried LOUDLY. Hell, they need to be pilloried. People actually believe some of these liberal asses are "honest", and that just can't be allowed to continue.
