The Plymouth, Michigan parish that is supporting the partial birth abortion gubernatorial candidate -- a parishioner -- gave us "Ten Ways to Show You Are Pro Life" in last Sunday's parish bulletin. Can you improve this list:
1) Visit the Giving Tree. There you will find small ways to help the unborn, the homeless and the defenders of our country who are now hospitalized.
2) Volunteer for Manna Meals. Groups of parishioners go weekly to a soup kitchen in Detroit (across from the old Tiger Stadium).
3) Knit or Crochet a Layette. The Council of Catholic Women of Detroit provides handmade clothes for newborns born to less fortunate mothers.
4) Visit a Garage Sale. Buy up all the baby items and donate them to Wee Care - a program of Right to Life that helps mothers in need. (Or better yet, have the owner provide them free of charge -- brochures are available.)
5) Pound a Nail. Habitat for Humanity is busy this summer and fall with a project on the near west side of Detroit. Every other Saturday, beginning August 24th. Blitz Build September 8th - 15th.
6) Volunteer for the Co/op Nursery . . . spending time with little ones keeps you young.
7) Exercise your citizenship muscles . . . Get out and vote.
8) Become a mentor for a child from an abusive home. First Step, a domestic abuse shelter in Plymouth, can show you how.
9) Visit a nursing home. You won't make it past the front door before you happen upon somebody who needs you. Look for Jesus in their face.
10) Pray . . . in earnest. Pray for every aspect of life; the poor, the hungry, the unborn, the sick and the disabled. A prayer group will be forming soon!

For those of you not familiar, Associate Pastor Doc Ortman on August 4 wrote an essay in the parish bulletin explaining why a partial birth abortion parishioner was deserving of Catholic support for governor (http://www3.catholicweb.com/bulletins/59371/Aug-04-2002.pdf). Also, the candidate's husband was allowed to distribute campaign literature in the church vestibule.
This sparked Pro-Life protests adjacent to church grounds during masses. These witnesses for our unborn children will resume their stations this weekend.
The Pastor and Cardinal of Detroit have given their tacit approval by not doing or saying anything to correct the priest-heretic who serves them.

7) Exercise your citizenship muscles . . . Get out and vote. For the candidate who, although nominally a Catholic, is in favor of partial birth abortion?
Vote for her just because she is a member of this parish?

Can anybody give me tips on pinging efficiently for an abortion / religious thread?
To: happytobealive
Looks like the leftists in charge of this schismatic parish are attempting to shame the members who dare oppose partial birth infanticide. They must be feeling pretty confident to escalate the situation this overtly. It's about time for some assenting parish members to call in the big guns and request a crackdown. Has anyone written to the man yet?

Items 1-9 are materialist. Odd that a Church established by Christ himself has forgotten that its primary mission is spiritual.
Oh yes... item 10 is spiritual. But comfortably vague. It advises us to pray.
What exactly are we to pray for Fr. Ortman, when our actions show us embracing and defending those who support killing the unborn; including those who demonstrate no desire for forgiveness or repentence? Should we pray for God to make us strong enough to overcome our cowardice? Pehaps to be blessed with the courage to go beyond condemning evil in the abstract and find the resolve to confront the actual evildoers? Especially when they are members of our own parish?

Can anybody give me tips on pinging efficiently for an abortion / religious thread? Best advice: make your own list by reading threads on the topic. It takes longer, but it still the best way to go. Promptly remove anyone who requests it. Don't abuse your list by pinging multiple times per day.
I personally am happy to be pinged to any pro-life thread - even if I'm not moved to comment.

Can anybody give me tips on pinging efficiently for an abortion / religious thread? As you decide who you want on your ping list, make a *.txt file with the names (separated by semi-colons) and save it on your desktop. When you are ready to ping your list, do a copy/paste from your *.txt file ping list into the "To" field. Add to your ping list as you see new names to ping.
BTW, please add me to your ping list. :-)

Fr. Doc Ortman's pro-abortion essay in the August 4 bulletin:
Many people have come to me in the two weeks just past to ask about television ads which point out that Ms. Granholm, our sister, is pro choice. The concern has come from a mistaken notion that being pro choice is equal to being pro abortion. However, choice is part of the very foundation of our Catholic Christian Community. There are some who would gloss over theological reflection for the sake of emotion; these people often end up persecuting other brothers and sisters through their ignorance. As disciples of the Lord Jesus we are required to pray for their good, and for their enlightenment.
The Lord God has created all people in absolute freedom. Every action we take, each word we utter, is a matter of choice. As Catholic Christians we understand that this Awesome freedom carries with it a grave responsibility. In the light of the teaching of Jesus we make choices according to a well formed conscience a conscience which is founded in the gospel which proclaims the blessedness of all people in any circumstances.
Scripture tells us that when God was finished creating, everything was very good. The correct response to that good is a life which reverences and cares for all that God has made. This is our faith, and I know well that this is also Ms. Granholm's faith as a Roman Catholic Christian person.
To say that one is pro choice is, for the Christian community, an admission that we are created in freedom. This is a freedom that no state or government can grant or take away; it is a gift from the Creator. By the same understanding it is a grave error to assume that the ability to freely choose actions and words is sinful.
For the past several weeks we have been persecuted by people who are living with a misguided notion of the freedom in which we are created. These people, signs in hand, are not interested in the reverence of God's gift of life; they are concerned only with the threat of abortion. This is one small part of the reverence we are called to have for all that the Lord has Created. These people would have the state legislate the freedom that only God can give or take. The reverence of all life is a choice that we make according to our discipleship. It is a response to the love of God, in Jesus, which leads us to reverence the unborn, the challenged, the elderly , the sick, the brilliant, the talented, the humble, the simple, the peacemakers . . . you get the idea.
Those who regard Ms. Granholm as a "heretic" do not understand, nor do they wish to understand, that choice in itself is a blessed gift. As with many other things this blessing can be used for evil rather than for blessing.
Make no mistake, Christians are pro choice in the purest understanding of the term. We are free to choose between the Lord and the evil one. We are fee to choose the Lord's abundant and awesome love, and we are free to choose to deny it. The ability to choose is neither good nor evil. The choice made may be either. Many persecute because they choose not to hear or understand the depth of God's gift of freedom. The freedom to choose is a gift in which to revel. It is not a heavy burden. The Lord has given us direction, and has asked that we CHOOSE according to what he says and does.
To borrow from the gospel . . .
"Let those with ears to hear heed what they hear!"
Grace and peace,
Doc

"a mistaken notion that being pro choice is equal to being pro abortion. " Some things ought never be a choice. The deliberate, planned killing of an innocent human being is one. To say that you are not for something when you make it a legitimate choice is dishonest. Pro choice MUST be pro abortion. Can you think that parents should have a choice about child abuse but then say you are not pro-child abuse?

"a mistaken notion that being pro choice is equal to being pro abortion. "This priest is hiding behind semantics. They don't want to say pro-abortion because it has a negative connotation. They call us - anti-abortion (not anti-choice) - because of the same negativity. It's amazing how easily people are brainwashed!

Anybody from Chicago who wants to join:
Head toward Detroit. Highway M14 runs east from Ann Arbor toward Detroit - take exit 18 (Beck Road) and head south on Beck - and then immediately turn west onto Territorial - OLGC is on the immediate right.
Also, Southwest Airlines departs Midway airport every hour or two and the one-way walk up fair is $96.
