Which State is the Armpit of America?

Ok fellow freepers. The aristocracy had fun deciding which 'hick town' was the armpit of America. Naturally it had to be rural and conservative. A tad redneck.
They were way off the mark. I would have picked New York prior to 9-11. I mean, good grief. Hellery's husband pardoned bomb terrorists to get her elected, the scandal is exposed to every New Yorker and they elected her anyway? She was silent on the issue for at least a week. But well, perhaps NY had been reborn in blood. So, I'm tempted to give them a pass.
Arkansas? Could that be the armpit of America? The home of NationsBank, Tyson Chicken, Walmart, Web Hubbell, and the Big Creep himself?
Then there is the delightful state of New Jersy, which is batting a thousand at elected scandal-swamped senators. Not only the Torch, but also Corzine.
Some might choose South Dakota. Not only do they keep re-electing Timber Tom [also called Rushmore Daschle], but they also go three days without brushing their teeth. So many choices....

Ive been to CA...lived there actually for a short time - its the main reason i hate it. Yes, the weather is gorgeous. But the politics make the old soviet union look permissive and i cant stand the self-absorbed, elitist and holier than thou attitude of most californians. And I been to Oklahoma. Personally I thought the weather was hellish and the geography extremely boring. Actually I couldn't wait to leave. Of course, being from California, I guess I am spoiled. As far as our politics being worse than the soviet union, I would say that's a bit of stretch, :o
By the way - as far as incomes - adjusted for the cost of living, they are about the same as the rest of the country. If you make 100k doing something that pays say 60k in OKC, but have a 2k mortgage as opposed to a $400.00 mortgage - where are you doing better?
Oh, I agree, incomes are about relative, however at 71 degrees all winter long with a mild pacific breeze, and floating in the pool in January while barbequing fresh caught, pacific yellow tail, while sipping a cold one, is very hard to beat.
Good luck in Okalahoma.

Touche' on your defense of the frighteningly frigid Duluth winters. And may I add, Duluth is one of my favorite towns - yes, I know that sounds wacky, but I love coming over the hill and seeing that view of the lake, the steep hills (I don't know how you guys drive there in the winter) and decent people.
Personally, I think Taxachussetts takes the cake. Altho my kind words toward Duluth might sound like I don't get around much, I actually travel extensively. And I choose Mass, even though my ideal place to live would be Woods Hole - 20 years ago.
Such a beautiful state which has sadly come so far from its roots.

"
They have the Paterson falls and all those turn of the century Factory buildings, but besides that does the city really have a reason for existing?"I guess as a backdrop for "The Sopranos"!! LOL! Didn't someone get pushed off the bridge over the falls (and rocks)?
The Ironbound really sounds horrible when it is described to someone, but it is a little gem of an ethnic pocket, and one place that you can feel rather safe.

Hey, hows the weather in wine country? We got about 77 degrees here with a brisk pacific breeze. A little chilly for my liking, I prefer about 82, but the cooler temps makes it nice while barbequing.

It was a fun thread for a while, until stung pride set in. Now it's a war of attrition. Yuck.
It was fun when people were good sports about the banter. That is how Reagan would have handled it. Freegards....

New York is the arm pit. California is the ass. And Florida, well, it is obvious what Florida is.

The only thing dumb is when people took it too seriously. California was roasted and toasted and while some were good sports, others got their... er.... leg supports in a bunch. And BTW, I was born in CA, spent half my life there. And I know for a fact, it's insane. Truly whacko. I lived in a dusty valley there, Modesto, home of Condidit. A town with mail vehicles running off methane, where every house was required to maintain a certain number of trees, where the head of education wanted to turn the students into Ghandis. The people were conservative for the most part, but the government and paper were liberal whackos, at least when I was there.
But I would not have voted for CA. I'm not even counting the votes. I would have if it didn't get so serious. This was all in fun. Just a chance to poke fun at the majority vote of whatever state you wanted to, more than anything else. To remind liberals that ridicule works both ways. Freegards.

I beleive you. When I was thinking of the great lakes region, I was thinking of cleveland, chicago, gary indiana, etc. I've never been to the northern side of the great lakes, only the southern side.
