Torricelli's Re-election Chances Downgraded on Aug. 4th
The Political Oddsmaker ^ | 8/4/02 | N/A

Posted on 08/06/2002 5:42:03 AM PDT by Coop

Sen. Bob Torricelli (D) favored over Douglas Forrester (R), 9 to 8
(52.9% chance; Torricelli's chances downgraded 8/4/02 from 55.6%)

Though this is a Democratic leaning state, and Torricelli is a tough pol who is well positioned geographically, Forrester has proven to be a capable candidate with loads of personal bucks at his disposal. The GOP thinks it has an outside shot because of Torricelli's personal negatives which were aggravated during recent investigations and Senate action. Polls show Torricelli's vote in the mid-to-high-30s, which is very low, even in a state that usually posts high undecideds in most competitive races. Recent indications show that Torricelli remains highly vulnerable and is still very much in re-election danger.

I hope you're right. If the polls are still showing a dead heat come Election Day, I think the Torch gets snuffed. [politically speaking, of course]

This reminds me of Herman Talmadge's (GA senator) problems...

Then what happened, after he was "un-elected"? Did he by any chance go on and get into some other trouble, end up in jail, and thus lose his lifetime pension?

Still hoping the "Torch" will get some real justice, LoL...but losing re-election would be a great start, and what's a few more hundred-thousand bucks, all things considered?!

No. In fact the Democrats in the state house had a bronze statue made of him and placed it across the street from the state capitol. I can remember someone on a radio show at the time saying they should have made it with money sticking out of his pockets so everyone would remember why he get thrown out of office in the first place.

Funny! And most likely true, unfortunately.

Just looking at it from a historical perspective, my friend.

FYI: I don't believe very much in polls. Especially if the race is close. The only one I will bank on is the poll taken on election day. The only one that really counts.

How about you?

It amazes me that a US Senator can squeak past a criminal prosecution, get horse-slapped by a friendly ethics committee, and still find support among a majority of voters. You'd think there would be a chorus of bi-partisan voices demanding Torricelli's resignation.

Most loyalty is to party now and not country. You're right, our political process has become so corrupted it will take a lot work to correct and I'm not sure the majority of the population is smart enough to figure it out.

After mid Nov the only one I'll pay attention to is the final vote total. Prior to the election, I'll maintain an interest in all polls from all sources, viewing each as having only 95% confidence, and knowing that a poll's sponsor will have an impact on the poll results.

For those who say polls mean nothing, they're not being realistic. They're certainly not a guarantee, but they do affect public perception/voter enthusiasm and fundraising.

It does happen both ways.

And yeah, I would say it if I lived in AZ and believed it to be true.

Historical perspective? Go back and look at some recent Senate incumbents with re-elect numbers like Bob Torricelli. See how they fared. You can start with Rod Grams.

That's the one I'm talking about.

For me, polls mean nothing. They don't persuade or dissuade me at all. I'll continue to work for my candidate whether she/he is 20 points ahead or behind.

As you should. For those of us not familiar with races in certain areas, however, polls and fundraising are the only tangible measurements of those races. You may not like polls (I'm not fond of how, with the help of a liberal media, they affect voter perceptions), but they're not going away.

I understand. 30 years since the GOP last won a Senate seat. But I bet (and I really don't know, just guessing) that none of those races had an incumbent Dem with awful numbers like these.

Hey, the Torch is still in a position to win, but he's hurting.

Didn't Marion Barry get re-elected in D.C. after a cocaine conviction?

You're right, but you're not giving the sorry episode its full due: He was re-elected in DC after serving a Prison sentence imposed after he was caught on surveillance tape smoking crack while he was mayor!!! IMHO this confirms the abject stupidity of the DC voters and shows that they lack the minimum adult comprehension to be released from the stewardship of the US Government.

Idiots.

Anyways, lets not forget Torch's proudest moment when, during the Senate hearings investigating the Chinese connection to our "stolen" (read sold) nuclear secrets, he stood up and solemnly relayed how he remembered viewing the Senate hearings on the Mafia as a child and how much they hurt him because he too is an Italian-American (bite bottom lip for cameras) and he hoped that Chinese-Americans weren't similarly being villainized.

Of course any first year journalism student was able to confirm that the hearings he referenced were actually held before he was born and they weren't available on tape. Sigh, the man actually lacks the intellectual horsepower to fashion even a possible lie.
