In funds, Bush was clear victor

He raised four times as much as Gore during Florida recount

07/28/2002

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - When the 2000 presidential election ended in a virtual deadlock, George W. Bush quickly raised nearly $14 million for the Florida recount fight, taking in money so quickly it surprised even his own staff.

"I think we were a little bit stunned by the amount we received," said Benjamin Ginsberg, a Bush attorney for the recount.

According to documents filed by Mr. Bush, the campaign took in $13.8 million, most of it through donations of $5,000 or less. Democrat Al Gore raised about one-fourth as much but generally in larger contributions.

The Gore campaign, which filed its disclosures more than a year ago, spent $3.2 million in its losing battle for Florida's 25 electoral votes. Donors included Hollywood producer Stephen Bing and actress Jane Fonda.

Mr. Bush's recount fund filed the required forms July 15, the last day of an IRS amnesty program for groups that don't comply, avoiding millions of dollars in possible fines.

"They obviously begrudgingly disclosed and did it way after the fact," said Larry Noble of the Center for Responsive Politics.

Mr. Ginsberg said there was no legal obligation to file the information with the IRS because the Bush recount effort was organized as part of the larger campaign, unlike Mr. Gore's recount effort. He noted that Mr. Bush had posted much of the information on the Internet months earlier.

What the AP conveniently (as always) made sure they didn't point out to their brain-dead readers, is that Bush's funds came from concerned and outraged patriotic American CITIZENS, a few bucks at a time. That's important! Gore got his dough from big demo fat-cats.

This to me, is the important point of the story. Look how "cleverly" AP made the point of the story the FILING date.

Ann Coulter stated in her book "Slander" that the average contribution to the Republican party is $50.

No one knows what the average is for the Democrats, they won't say.

Anyone know how to find out?

Let me re-inforce that point about Bush having it on his website months before. I was one of the outraged and gave the pittance I could afford - my donation was posted in about a week. So, AP, anyone who cared to look could have from the beginning.

Offer to donate ten thousand times that amount?

You are absolutely right. My name, location, and amounts was posted in a PDF document within a week on the website. The PDF was updated daily but was a few days behind.

Me too, and I still have a nice thank-you letter from Don Evans. Is the website still up? Duh on me, I never even was aware of it. I'd like to see if I'm on it.

I don't understand what "raised nearly $14 million for the Florida recount fight" means. I must have a bad memory. Why did people contribute to one person or the other during the recount?

Algore had RAT lawyers going to Florida on their own dime.

A friend of one has said that his "friend" said "I'm going to Florida to get military votes thrown out". The guy who reported this was a lifelong DemocRAT and he was crying when he said it. He also said that he would never, ever again vote DemocRAT.

BTW, he was a veteran.

Democrats apppeal to people who accept being designated poor--or those who want to designate people as poor.

If you don't want to be designated a poor victim and you don't want to designate anyone else a poor victim, you are middle class. And you are almost certain to be a Republican.

Only a Democrat could speak of "the forgotten middle class"--that's a non sequetur to a Republican.

Lawyers cost money. Also, people watching vote counts needed to be fed and housed. Keeping up the media fight to get your side's story out requires PR people. It requires faxes, phone calls and e-mails. Also, communications had to be monitored to keep track of all the various court fights throughout Florida.

The Ballad of Al Gore (sung to the Ballad of Jed Clampett)

Come and listen to my story 'bout a man named Gore
A snippy Democrat, who was really quite a bore
On election day of his Presidential bout
He thought he lost the fight but he got to recount

Ballots that is... punch cards... butterflies.

Well the next thing you know they're countin' 'em again
He lost a second time so he gave it all some spin
They said Palm Beach is the place you oughta be
So he hired legal experts from Tallahassee

Florida that is... sunshine state... deadlocked.

Well the next thing you know they wanna change the rules
And play around with votes cause they think we're friggin fools
They riled lotsa folks and they made a lotta fuss
Till Cheney came along and started kickin' butts

Buttocks that is... liberal hineys... left-wing tuchas.

Al Gore whined that the system wasn't fair
After countin' ballot holes that weren't even there
Kate Harris said that the recount was a joke
But that didn't stop the liberals from tallyin' votes

Democrat votes that is... hangin' chad... dimpled ballots.

Well the State Supreme Court gave Gore another break
They let him count again cause the party was at stake
But just when he thought that his dream was born anew
The overseas votes gave it all to W

George W that is... Texas Governor... President-elect.

Now it's time to say good-bye to Al and all his kin
He tried to steal some votes but it didn't help him win
You're all invited over to his house in Tennessee
To sit around and blubber at his pity-parteeee

Nashville that is... pout a while... have some sour grapes.

Ya'll have fun now... Ya Hear?

A little weekend humor, courtesy of the Lee County Republicans....Texas that is. www.leecountyrepublicans.org.
