Felton, please shut up!! The only people that are offended by this flag are those that
A) have no idea what they're talking about historically and
B)have nothing better to do with their time say like take care of the dropout rates, teenage pregnancy, and broken homes.
You have the word Christian in the name of your organization. Think you could take a moment out of your crusade for killing my heritage to maybe do something about the hopelessness in the inner cities in the urban north, which BTW last time I checked don't have that many Confederate flags a flying? What's their excuse? They saw one on TV one time and are afraid from just the memory?
Oh, bullsh*t. My great-great grandparents were southern racists, my grandparents were, and my parents still struggle with it even though they know it's not right.
Up until the 1950s NO ONE in the South, and d*mn few in the North, treated those of a different race as "neighbors."
This kind of stuff just REEKS.
You neo-"Confederate" types would do your silly cause FAR more good if you'd just stay away from the race thing altogether, and try to continue fooling people with the "it's about states' rights" thing.
If you're lucky, no one will bother reading the declarations of secession issued by several of the seceding states in 1861, which said nothing about ANYTHING but slavery. Then you can continue to fool some of the people all of the time--a notion to which, I realize, you don't subscribe because it came from Mr. Lincoln.
At some point, black voters are going to rebel against racist ploys to keep them in their placesafe in the clutches of the Democratic Party. But Al Gore and Joe Lieberman are hoping that it wont be this yearwhich is why they arent saying much about the despicable NAACP ads running against George W. Bush.
The ads, in grainy black and white, show a pickup truck with a chain dragging across a dirt road. The voice-over is by Renee Mullins, the daughter of James Byrd, a black man dragged to his death two years ago chained to a pickup in Jasper, Tex.
Mullins accuses Gov. Bush of refusing to support a new hate-crimes bill, saying, "It was like my father was killed all over again." The unmistakable message: Bush condones lynching.
SNIP .... At the risk of sounding insensitive and being flamed, how does it represent a history of hate? That flag was flown during battle, representing the Confederate Army. It was a source of pride and a rally point for the Confederate forces. When the South lost the war the flag no longer represented a fledgling country, because it no longer existed. Seems to me the hate the writer refers to is the hate engendered by hate groups who unethically co-opted the flag for their own purposes. The only hate being displayed here is the hate toward all things southern, or ante-bellum.
The rest of us will honor our forefathers or respectfully acknowledge the memorial.
I have to admit I have not read any of the state declarations. However, the succession was WAS about whether the North could continue its economic domination and abuse of the South.
Blacks continue to busy themselves with all this posturing and objecting, rather than just getting on with the business of improving themselves. We're really tired of it and the Battle Flag is staying up wherver we can find politicians with the spine to fight.
If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Plus, how long will it be until they will want a house that was a plantation, or even remotely resembles plantation architecture, destroyed? Give them time.
Surely you know better than to assert absolutes like the above, especially based on low-number anecdotal citations?
This kind of stuff just REEKS.
No kidding.
The NAACP is a disgrace to the people it claims to represent, seeking out imagined 'offense' where none exists and wasting everyone's time as well as further dividing the races over things like flags.
This is a prime example of an organization that has far outlived it's purpose and usefullness and now scutters around the south, looking for something to be offended about, like a Confederate flag flying over a Confederate memorial that's stood for 44 years with no obvious offense to anyone.
I'm not a southerner and don't have any emotional attachment to the Confederate flag but this endless whining by the NAACP over this non-issue is both tiring and telling as to their bankrupt agenda of finding racism and offense in every corner and on every public square.
It deserves to be opposed and exposed as the sham it is.
