"People are afraid they feel intimidated and offended when they see the flag," Felton Barnes of the SCLC said.

Felton, please shut up!! The only people that are offended by this flag are those that
A) have no idea what they're talking about historically and
B)have nothing better to do with their time say like take care of the dropout rates, teenage pregnancy, and broken homes.

You have the word Christian in the name of your organization. Think you could take a moment out of your crusade for killing my heritage to maybe do something about the hopelessness in the inner cities in the urban north, which BTW last time I checked don't have that many Confederate flags a flying? What's their excuse? They saw one on TV one time and are afraid from just the memory?

"My grandpa weren't the kind of fella that would hurt a black person in any way cause my grandpa knew they were his neighbors and he was neighborly with them," Lundy said.

Oh, bullsh*t. My great-great grandparents were southern racists, my grandparents were, and my parents still struggle with it even though they know it's not right.

Up until the 1950s NO ONE in the South, and d*mn few in the North, treated those of a different race as "neighbors."

This kind of stuff just REEKS.

You neo-"Confederate" types would do your silly cause FAR more good if you'd just stay away from the race thing altogether, and try to continue fooling people with the "it's about states' rights" thing.

If you're lucky, no one will bother reading the declarations of secession issued by several of the seceding states in 1861, which said nothing about ANYTHING but slavery. Then you can continue to fool some of the people all of the time--a notion to which, I realize, you don't subscribe because it came from Mr. Lincoln.

Once the flag comes down, the park itself will then become offense and have to go. Little by little....

Funny notion. The Nazi flag isn't really being flown anywhere, but as far as I can tell, Germany's still there.

Race-Baiting to Try Scare Blacks Away From GOP
NAACP Ad Says Bush Condones Lynching
By Linda Chavez

At some point, black voters are going to rebel against racist ploys to keep them in their place–safe in the clutches of the Democratic Party. But Al Gore and Joe Lieberman are hoping that it won’t be this year–which is why they aren’t saying much about the despicable NAACP ads running against George W. Bush.

The ads, in grainy black and white, show a pickup truck with a chain dragging across a dirt road. The voice-over is by Renee Mullins, the daughter of James Byrd, a black man dragged to his death two years ago chained to a pickup in Jasper, Tex.

Mullins accuses Gov. Bush of refusing to support a new hate-crimes bill, saying, "It was like my father was killed all over again." The unmistakable message: Bush condones lynching. SNIP ....

"...and represents a history of hate."

At the risk of sounding insensitive and being flamed, how does it represent a history of hate? That flag was flown during battle, representing the Confederate Army. It was a source of pride and a rally point for the Confederate forces. When the South lost the war the flag no longer represented a fledgling country, because it no longer existed. Seems to me the hate the writer refers to is the hate engendered by hate groups who unethically co-opted the flag for their own purposes. The only hate being displayed here is the hate toward all things southern, or ante-bellum.

Since it's so painful for you, don't visit the monument - that way you won't be offended. Close your eyes when you go by, or take a different route so you won't have to pass the monument.

The rest of us will honor our forefathers or respectfully acknowledge the memorial.

I have to admit I have not read any of the state declarations. However, the succession was WAS about whether the North could continue its economic domination and abuse of the South.

Blacks continue to busy themselves with all this posturing and objecting, rather than just getting on with the business of improving themselves. We're really tired of it and the Battle Flag is staying up wherver we can find politicians with the spine to fight.

You may want to visit Ocala, just a few hours south of Crestview - they are dedicating Florida's first slave memorial.

Oh, bullsh*t. My great-great grandparents were southern racists, my grandparents were, and my parents still struggle with it even though they know it's not right.

Just because your heritage is full of racism, do not think that everyone's was. My family has lived in the South for almost 400 years and for the past 300 we did not own slaves. My WHITE parents, BEFORE the 1950s were sitting in the back of the bus as a protest to segregation. My father died as a missionary in Central Africa. And I fly numerous flags of Independence: Bonnie Blue, First National, and North Carolina 1861. I am proud of my heritage, and my NON-racist ancestors.

Just because your ancestors were racists, don't think every one was or is.

The NAACP is run by a bunch of racist thugs who have no excuse left for their own existence. Their continual attacks on American historical icons and figures will only escalate in direct proportion to each success they achieve on issues like this one.

Tell the NAACP that they need to take the racist term "Colored People" out of their organization's name.

Plus, how long will it be until they will want a house that was a plantation, or even remotely resembles plantation architecture, destroyed? Give them time.

Surely you know better than to assert absolutes like the above, especially based on low-number anecdotal citations?

This kind of stuff just REEKS.

No kidding.

Blacks, at 13% of the U.S. population represent over 50% of the prison inmates, have a 70% illegitmacy rate and have higher school drop out rates than most any other ethnic group but the NAACP spends it's members money and a lot of time and energy on this Confererate flag 'issue' all over the south. How telling.

The NAACP is a disgrace to the people it claims to represent, seeking out imagined 'offense' where none exists and wasting everyone's time as well as further dividing the races over things like flags.

This is a prime example of an organization that has far outlived it's purpose and usefullness and now scutters around the south, looking for something to be offended about, like a Confederate flag flying over a Confederate memorial that's stood for 44 years with no obvious offense to anyone.

I'm not a southerner and don't have any emotional attachment to the Confederate flag but this endless whining by the NAACP over this non-issue is both tiring and telling as to their bankrupt agenda of finding racism and offense in every corner and on every public square.

It deserves to be opposed and exposed as the sham it is.
