[history]
The food police at the Center for Science in the Public Interest have jumped on the recent health scare involving French fries and potato chips. Not surprisingly, its new effort at food terrorism is self-debunking.
Swedish "scientists" surprised us in April with their finding that baking and frying high-carbohydrate foods

The fattening of America is undeniable. I don't need experts to tell me about it. I can see it for myself.
Europeans share our genetics. They don't look like escaped barnyard animals. Why not?

I wouldn't worry about the acrylamide. Folks who eat this stuff will die from heart disease long before they die of cancer.

They don't look like escaped barnyard animals. Why not? $5 a gallon gas?

As I understand (though you don't often see),
all contain carcinogens -- government doesn't measure naturally occurring carcinogens (they weren't covered by the Delaney clause -- I'm not sure that's still around) or put recommended limits on them.
I've also read that all plants produce some form of natural "pesticide" -- and that "organically grown" plants produce more (of necessity) than those treated with pesticides.
Bottom line -- none of us is getting out of here alive!

"For a 154-pound human, this equates to a lifetime daily dose of 35,000 micrograms." Geez, when's the last time you saw a 154-pound human? 7th grade?

Sort of like the old cyclamates {sp} sweetener scare back in the 1970's. Later tests revealed that one would have had to consume nearly 900 12-ounce colas each day for decades to attain the "scientific study" detrimental effects.

What happened when Canadian lab mice were given as little as a gallon of Diet Pepsi? They drowned.

Sort of like the old cyclamates {sp} sweetener scare back in the 1970's. Do you recall what National Review said about that? To keep everybody happy, they should leave cyclamates on the market -- just label them "rat poison." People who wanted to could continue to use them in their coffee, and the others could watch their rats die -- very, very slowly.

Agreed, but the science here does not address fat people. They are attacking fast food as cancerous. Why don't they call a spade a spade and attack the fat aspect. This is junk science that in the end throws doubt on their WHOLE argument. Bottom line, they make this crap up long enough and even when they are correct no one will listen.
To: KansasConservative1
If they had determined that french fries don't cause cancer, how would they get another government grant to determine the cancer causing affects of french fries?
Most of these studies are designed to get a certain result. And that result is a never ending gravy train of government money.

6th grade actually and she had french fries bulging out all four of her cheeks.

Ohh...No!
Did you notice the BMI for Russian women?!

Actually it is deniable. We're continuing to live longer. Given the health problems associated with being over weight if we were "fattening" our life expectancy would be dropping.
Europeans are shorter than us on average, which means they're not as well nurished while growing up. As for relative comparisons to barnyard animals I think the Euros win they're hairier and anybody that's been downwind of a Frenchmen...

My dad, who has actually worked for the USDA for about 40 years, still cites those findings when he gets particularly disgusted by "scientific studies." It's nice to have available a govt employee I can trust for truth and perspective when I need it. :)

"Europeans share our genetics. They don't look like escaped barnyard animals. Why not?"No other country on earth eats as much SUGAR in all forms as Americans (except perhaps the English/Irish), to the tune of about 175 pounds per year. Refined sugars, high-fructose corn syrup, sucrose, etc. We also eat tons of scorched, cremated, and denatured vegetable oils, oils loaded with polyunsaturated fatty acids (which are good at suppressing the immune system and accelerating aging) and trans-fatty acids. But the French, for instance, eat mostly natural animal fats, like butter, cream, goose and duck fat, etc.

You're forgetting the availability of better medical care. Obese people will live longer, but it'll cost a lot more to keep'em that way, and their quality of life probably won't be as good as it would've been if they'd taken care of themselves. Not to mention the fact that you rarely ever see any very old obese people. Skinnies still tend to live longer.
