Statement Of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton On The Pledge Of Allegiance

Statement Of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton On The Pledge Of Allegiance

I am surprised and offended by the decision of the Appeals Court of the 9th Circuit and hope that it will be promptly appealed and overturned. I believe that the Court has misinterpreted the intent of the framers of the Constitution and has sought to undermine one of the bedrock values of our democracy -- that we are indeed "one nation under God," as embodied in the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

While our men and women in uniform are battling overseas and defending us here at home to preserve the freedom that we all cherish for our country and its citizens, we should never forget the blessings of Divine Providence that undergird our nation. That includes the freedom to recite the pledge of allegiance in our nation's schools. I can only imagine how they will feel about this decision as they risk their lives for our values.

And the children of America, who share a bond with each other and with our nation by reciting the pledge each day -- what effect will a decision like this have on them? It will cause them to wonder about the ways in which our beliefs can be stretched, our heritage can be assaulted. It is the wrong decision, and it is an unfair decision -- especially unfair to those who defend our nation, and to the young people who will inherit our nation's future.

Ours is a nation founded by people of faith. People of faith have helped lead some of the most significant movements of social justice throughout our history -- to end slavery, to win civil rights for all Americans. No one is required to have faith, and our government does not impose faith on its citizens. But ours is the most faith-filled nation on Earth, and there is no moral or Constitutional argument why our pledge of allegiance cannot acknowledge our commonly held belief that ours is one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

I am honored to support S. 292, the Pledge of Allegiance resolution, and I hope that the rule of law will be upheld by an ultimate rejection of this wrongheaded decision of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Seems I read once where hillary changed the wording of the pledge when having to publically recite our national pledge-it was written that she changed the words to pledge alligance to the American that 'could be' so that she could swallow having to recite the pledge.

Hillary Pledges Allegiance to 'the America That Can Be'
NewsMax.com | June 27, 2002 | Carl Limbacher

The two judges on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals who ruled yesterday that the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional aren't the only folks who have a problem with the Pledge's wording.

Apparently, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton would also like to revise the words that every schoolchild learns to recite in kindergarten.

While the 9th Circuit objected to the phrase "one nation under God," Sen. Clinton reportedly prefers a version of the Pledge that acknowledges America's flaws, one that begins with the words: "I pledge allegiance to the America that can be."

News of Hillary's Pledge preference surfaced last November, when MSNBC "Hardball" host Chris Matthews was explaining why he thought she would make a White House bid:

"Hillary is dying for it," Matthews said during an interview with NBC's Tim Russert. "But she's also miserable right now because of all this patriotic stuff going on. She can't stand it. I remember Hillary. ... She once said, 'I pledge allegiance to the America that can be.'

"What are we, on probation?" Matthews protested. "I mean, when is she - when is she going to lighten up about this country and say 'This is a great place,' instead of her constant complaining?"

Matthews continued:

"This is too much Barbra Streisand complaining about the country. I'm sorry. I'll say it. [Hillary has] got to love this place. And you know who'll win the next presidency, if it's a Democrat, it'll be a Hubert Humphrey-style Democrat who loves this country, who's happy, who's optimistic about the country. If it's another begrudger, another fearmonger, then Democrats don't deserve to win."

But remember her ACTIONS during the National Day of Mourning after 9-11.

I don't believe that this came from Hillary.

She did not [stand, pledge, sing, etc.] at that prayer service. [..... ] I don't remember exactly what she did not do, but I do remember that her behavior was extremely disrepectful.

Funny, I called my Senators today to ask for a copy of their official statements on the ruling, and Hitlery comes out with one the same day.

The atheists can't be happy about this.

Right, she pledged "allegiance to the America that could be", perhaps looking forward to creating that "new America" for us.

When she issues statements as seen in the above article, is when she lies the most!

I don't believe that this came from Hillary.

Possible. BUT.....it's popular today, to be on the side of God. There's been such an uproar today among even the Dems, she HAS to say something like this.

And the children of America, blah, blah, blah... especially unfair to those who defend our nation, and to the young people who will inherit our nation's future.

Why am I not surprised? It's for the children!

Why thank ya, babe! That was the ticket...that was my memory of hillary's pledge preferance. Amazing that is was Chris Matthews reporting on it back then. Funny how that comment never quite made it into today's posted comments on ol hitlery's website regarding the 9th circuit's ruling, tho, don't cha think? This is a woman with no conviction, no standards, no integrity and zero heart.

I mean...hillary's real preferance on our national pledge's 'wording' actually infers NO ALLEGIANCE at all to our country, until it changes to meet HER standards, whatever they are. She is one sick puppy. And a liar, too.
