Email: The Future of Free Republic
Email | 06/25/02 | Jim Robinson

Posted on 06/25/2002 3:42:21 AM PDT by Jim Robinson

The following email is being circulated to our members by various disgruntled former FReepers:

Subject: The Future of Our Free Republic

Dear Fellow Free Republic Member,

Many of us at Free Republic are distressed by the extraordinary level of censorship that has been so obviously going on. It is very obvious that individual posts, entire threads, and the entire work of members who have been highly regarded are disappearing into a Memory Hole.

Scores of us have organized an e-mail network that is independent of the communication controls presently, and sadly, being used at our Free Republic. We have carefully documented the unmistakeable evidence that most of the posts, threads, and posters that are vaporized completely are overwhelmingly targeted for their political stance on the Right. These are not Leftwingers. These are not even Middle-of-the-Roaders. These are not disruptors. These are not foul-mouthed delinquents. These are fellow patriots on the Right who disagree with the controllers of FR on specific issues that are now hotly debated by the Right. We have documented that FR will parade before you, as if to hide all of the great posters whose work has been destroyed, a straw-man delinquent that has been banned. This is deceptive.

Treating these fellow patriots on the Right so shabbily is not right. As shabbily as those banned into the Memory Hole are being treated, the most shabbily treated of all are all of the good folks on Free Republic themselves. We came here for honest debate. Free Republic advertised itself as a Forum for honest debate. Without that honest debate...everything at Free Republic becomes shabby.

We can do much better. As a measure of how intense the simmering feelings have gotten among members on this unjustifiable use of deleting, censoring, and banning please link to the following thread. You will notice that one simple and sincere plea from one of our finest members has spontaneously touched off a prairie fire of approximately 500 posts in a mere 18 hours. If it isn't Memory Holed this thread may shoot into the thousands.

If you would like to receive anonymous updates of information concerning the hundreds of Freepers who have networked via e-mail to restore the wonderful honest debate to Free Republic, just drop an e-mail of just one or two words if you like for extreme brevity to:

StopCensoringUs@hotmail.com

And, here's that link back to the snowballing thread at FR:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/704701/posts

Thank you so much for giving your thought to this vital matter for our Internet home.

Sincerely, StopCensoringUs@hotmail.com

Hang in there. There are more of us here than you might think. You WILL get a lot of whiners making complaints about you, though.

An oldie but a goodie (and started by yours truly): Are there any nonreligious conservatives on FR?

This one went to a second thread, for a total of over 400 replies. By and large, a very polite thread. I'm kinda proud of it, as it was one of my first couple of posts at FR.

Well said, Jim. Guess I'm a Bush-bot as well. It makes me so angry to see people whining that things aren't "perfect" about Bush, when they should be rejoicing that the Dem party has been practically shattered by his being in the White House. People these days seem to flailing away trying to find their Utopian "ideal" and don't look at what's really possible, as opposed to what they'd LIKE to happen. We need to completely gut the Dem party, for once and for all, and THAT'S the bottom line. Thank you for Free Republic!!
yes, this is called kissing up!! LOL!

Well, I'd suggest that when you're hankering for deep debate with the great ones, you click on their forum link. And when you're in the mood for choir practice, click on ours. See, there's always a practical solution to all of life's problems. No matter how big or how small.

"I think you're missing the whole point of this little exercise."

Never mind SF, I read down to this reply and I think I "see the point of this little exercise" now.

That truth being their equipment cannot handle a large influx

It wouldn't leave enough room for all the anti-Freepers.

Yes, I just did. But understand JD's post is #309, whereas I was responding to post #51. It takes time to catch up! *grin*

Ah, good. Thanks for the reply.

"to weed out the 'eschoirs' of the world...so that when people came to visit the site, they wouldn't be swamped with junk comments, pics of the beautiful crowd"

Awwwwk! Censorship! Censorship! Haven't you people ever heard of the first amendment? We have a right to post whatever we wish on your site! I don't like the rules. Sounds like a country club for the intellectually elite. more patriotic than thou crowd. You must be afraid of dissenting opinion. Squaaaak! Somebody hold me back before I post on there again!!

Gubm't

Anyone who uses "Gubm't" as part of his normal, everyday language should be banned.

The hardcore liberals will hate him no matter what and the rest of the country is in the bag I don't see how caving to the left will help Bush win the Senate.

..."Those posters who are members of the "Republican Party, right or wrong" clique, are just as wrong and fanatical in their support of their party as the Klintonites were..."...

Oh no they aren't!!!! DUH! Didn't you see the "R" they wear? Sheesh.....you'd have us think that President Nixon was as corrupt as the Perverted Prez? Well, he wasn't.....so what that he lied, so what he tried to sic government agents on citizens, so what he tried to obstruct justice, was an accessory to a crime, and undoubtedly a lot of other crimes! There's an "R" there!

Any "R" is better than any "D", "C", "L", or "Re"! Get used to it. < /sarcasm >

JimRob, you've always been more than fair with me, and you know where I stand overall.

I would like to see a strong conservative/libertarian(small l) majority as well, and I'm working here on it with the local party. I've seen your old quotes from 99, and I think both of us have changed a little since IMO, we're both realists.

Right now in Michigan, we have a good strong conservative running for Carl Lenin's seat, and a good conservative candidate for governor, attorney general, and secretary of state.

As irked as I have been with Bush lately, I'm not going to punish the rest of the ticket, or worry about 2004 when we have a fight in our own backyard this year. Dick Posthumus is a good guy and went to bat for us(MCRGO), as have Rocky, and and Mike Cox.

I don't want to see Jenny Granholm as our next gov. Think of Bill Klinton without the sex scandals but the communist views.

BTW - I'd love to see a Governor Simon.

And it is only fair to indicate your innuendo that Liberty Forum stifles 'Free Speech' through the invitation is bogus--but you probably already know the truth of the matter.

That truth being their equipment cannot handle a large influx at this time and they are working on the programming enhancements, etc.

Further, there was an effort for members to nominate those who could add to the debate process...to weed out the 'eschoirs' of the world...so that when people came to visit the site, they wouldn't be swamped with junk comments, pics of the beautiful crowd, yada yada, but find a place where issues of liberty, freedom, governance are discussed--and yet there is a place for the occasional humor. Regional issues are discussed as well as national and international.

I’m not sure what bogus innuendo you’re referring to or what truth you seem to think I’m suppressing. I simply said:

I was responding to the E Mails statement that Among the reasons for this back channel of communication are to help folks like [name omitted]: a)find new and other forums on the Internet where their fine writing can be effective (like LibertyForum.org and LibertyPost),, which would seem to imply that it’s open to all, in contrast to “FRs censorship”. It’s not.

I admit my interest in posting there has waned. Intentional or not, I’d suggest that their method of admitting “beta testers” "by invitation" has imposed a defacto if not intentional censorship of the viewpoints expressed.

It is not at this time, as the letter states, a free speech alternative for anyone other than invitees. Whether deliberate or simply a function of banned freepers congregating with ex Sam Fancis posters, this creates a continuity of thought.

This may be for good technical reasons, and may change when membership is opened, but it doesn’t change the fact that it is not the realm of free speech that I’m sure you’ll make it in the future.

You left out a couple of other issues.
