Mister Chretien is in his third term as prime minister of Canada. Canada has no term limits. He is not elected by Canadians -- just by the members of his own Liberal political party and only to be party leader. He wants to stay in office for life. Editors who write about this subject -- the Montreal Gazette -- get fired immediately.

Chretien Time Out
By
James Bredin
The problem with politicians, they would like to stay for life,
But liable to leave a legacy of lechery laziness and strife,
This pompous pride of princes pushed by the euphoria of power,
Stamps a status-quo system that screams for changes by the hour.
Mister Chretien is no different, his system may be worse,
Hes the self-righteous arrogance that caused this Canadian curse,
He wrote the Charter but without a term limit clause,
Cause now he can stay for life and pretend hes Santa Clause.
He conveniently conceived a system of judge-made laws,
And then forgot and refused to use the notwithstanding clause,
Even when his appointees made off-the-wall decisions,
Pornography and spouses stamped their socialist revisions.
No proportional representation or referendums without permission,
No callbacks for Canadians; it could interfere with his ambition,
Its do-gooder policies for every refugee who arrives,
With sick relatives and families and three or four wives.
He also forgot property rights or paying down the national debt,
A large legacy that six hundred billion dollars plus the Bombardier jet,
Add that little touch of communism without property rights,
And no set election dates from those pompous political heights.
This story is not over; theres no schedule for change,
Hes staying for life and you can be sure he will arrange,
And those who write stories that its time he was retired,
Will be unemployed quickly when they suddenly get fired.

I as an American just fail to understand why you allow the unmanly french in your midst to set the tone in Canada. I know you are good neighbors and are loyal friends but for GODS sake man act like you have some kahones up there man.
Chretien is about as inspiring as an avacado. Vanilla pudding man. Get some thing any thing real. Some one that could take a stand. Any stand on any subject.
Canada is such a disappointment.

Kind of funny to think of, if Clinton could have run for a third term, he would have......... and he would have won.... again.

Annex BC, Alberta, and Yukon. Recognize Quebec.
Let the rest of it go to Hell.

Joe , look at the electoral map.Count the seats in the various Provinces, then you'll get a better handle on how things work.

Ontario and Quebec have always had the largest share of seats in the House of Commons. The Liberals used to have equal strength through all sections of Canada until their heavy handed socialism alienated Western Canada. Today Canada has a de-facto one party system: the Liberals. The opposition is divided between conservatives from Western Canada and separatists from Quebec. Its hard to see such an odd pair being a respectable alternative government to replace the ruling Liberals. Yup, if a parliamentary election were held now, Jean Chretien and his party would easily win another term.

Western Canadian conservatives who support the Canadian Alliance (like yours truly) have nothing in common with Quebec separatists. Our strategy is to unite all Quebecers who want more power for their province through Alliance's proposed reforms to rebalance federal-provincial jurisdiction.

Canadians deserve better than socialism and oppressive government. I'm rooting for Harper and the Alliance...

Jim - Forget annexing Quebec. They are one of our MOST major problems. Quebec produced Chretien after all. And yes, the man is an absolute tyrannical maniac. He embarrasses all of us from the West and for the life of me, I cannot see why Ontario and Quebec (the seat laden Provinces) keep putting that mental midget in power. At the rate he has been going lately however, he just may self-destruct. Lynn

Me too Sunsong!!! Steven Harper is an absolute gem. He's very smart, a trained Economist and extremely presentable and honorable. The Alliance will continue to get my vote as they have before.

I believe I said
annex BC, Alberta, and Yukon, and
recognize (the independence of) Quebec.
My long term career goal is to be the first United States Ambassador to Quebec, with apartements in the Chateau Frontenac and a weekend house at Charlevoix.
This plan would be foiled if we were to annex Quebec, so I'm opposed to that move.
To: Jim Noble
Are you sure you want BC? They've spent the last decade ruining their economy with a communist govt. they themselves elected many times over.
To: CanadianFella
Americans will flood into BC and will be a voting majority in 1-3 years.

Most of the people I know from Canada live in Calgary, and they already think they're part of the US. Alberta would be an easy annex.
