[history]
In a remarkable series of experiments, University of Minnesota researchers have shown for the first time in mice that rare stem cells taken from bone marrow can form the tissue of many different organs.
The research, led by Dr. Catherine Verfaillie of the University of Minnesota Stem Cell Institute and published in advance online Thursday by the journal Nature, is a major advance in adult stem-cell research, with implications for future medical treatments.

But it is so much more utilitarian to create life and then destoy to it save another life.

No it has to be a life boat scenario. They've got to get the cells from aborted babies. One must die so that another lives. What will Dr. Dean Edell do for a show when he can't hammer Christians by way of the stem cell/abortion issue?
To: Valin
The Frankenstien doctors aren't concerned about healing cells as much as they are for finding the fountain of youth. The youth of the unborn so that Hollywood and Democrat politicians may live forever.
Otherwise, they'd be celebrating this discovery. It's a huge step in the right direction.

I have looked into this at length. This is why the money is on stem cells from an aborted fetus instead of adult stem cells.
Adult stem cells have to be harvested from the patient and then injected back into the same patient. The use of fetal stem cells alows a company to mass produce cells and sell them at a huge profit.
Why would the industry want to go with the first aproach? It limits the marketability of the cure.
The fact that the adult stem cell route also gets around the rejection problen is is not enough to overcome the profit isue. They can always put the patient on anti-rejection drugs for the rest of their life. It's no skin off their back...

So the left is secretly supporting the pharmacudical companies their mouths condemn? They're supporting big business over lower cost and health of the patient?

This is going to hit the Evening News tomorrow (yeah right...they only report on embryonic stem cell research because it serves their agenda).
To: concerned about politics
It's not the "left" that is pushing fetal stem cells. The left doesn't give a crap about the little ones, and the isue gives them one more reason to push abortion. That's not where the push for fetal tissue is comming from. Follow the money. (I'm sure you have heard that before} The left doesn't have the money...

Genetically marked stem cells from adult mice were injected into the embryos of other mice. When born, the mice had many organs that were formed in part by the introduced stem cells. Genetically marked adult stem cells were injected into other mice, and successfully formed colonies in the liver, intestines and lungs. In a finding that replicated earlier published research, Verfaillie found that mouse and rat stem cells could be manipulated in the laboratory to mimic tissue from a variety of organs.I must be in a particularly good mood as I saw this article as a piece of good news. I guess some folks just have to only see the down side.

Isn't it interesting that the studies coming out on the adult bone marrow 'progenitor' cells are showing much more promise than those on the embryonic stem cells? Think Someone is trying to tell us something?

This is good news. While the "market" may call for aborted fetuses, there are still many people out there, including surgeons, doctors and researchers, who recognize the value of life.

I saw the article as good news too.
For those that don't, read this...
"I never did understand how some parents could ever let their young child die when a life-saving medical procedure was readily available to save the child's life. Yet for each child whose parents allows him or her to die there are several thousand times more parents that would utilize the medical procedure to save their child's life.
"If a parent could save their child's life but the only medical procedure that would save the child's life was in part derived from embryonic stem cells, should the parents save their child's life? What if the child was yours?"

Thanks for posting this. Adult stem cells continue to amaze.

...University of Minnesota researchers have shown for the first time in mice that rare stem cells taken from bone marrow can form the tissue of many different organs. Hmmm...the first time, huh?
How will they explain this news from January?
"...A Yale research team led by Diane Krause turned a single stem cell from the bone marrow of an adult mouse into lung, liver, intestinal, and skin cells for other mice."

What in the world is wrong with profits???? If companies aren't making profits, they certainly aren't sending checks to the government to support liberal spending. They won't be hiring. Their stock will tank affecting your 401k.
At my company, we celebrate profits. It means we did good.
It's amazing to me how Democrats have spun the "evil" of capitalism. A company's profit the size of a waitress tip is BAD. The same company may be paying three times the amount of profits in taxes. That's the tragedy.
To: Valin
Verfaillie and McKay said their findings offer compelling reasons why adult and embryonic stem cell research should be pursued. It is not yet known, Verfaillie said, which type of cell will prove to be the best route to medical treatments. Exactly. The reasearch in both types of cells should proceed. We don't know the answer until we do the research.

"If a parent could save their child's life but the only medical procedure that would save the child's life was in part derived from embryonic stem cells, should the parents save their child's life? What if the child was yours?" I would choose my child's life without a moment of hesitation.
