Okay Freepers. Let's Clean Up Our Act and Have Fun Doing it.

JimRob and many of us other oldtimers are concerned that the viciousness of the personal attacks are getting out of hand.

The continued hyperbole could ultimately destroy our site.

Let's adapt ridicule, poking fun at our adversaries as the method of choice to blow off steam.

I just handled a disruptor on the Freepathon thread this way by asking him if he was bucking for Jim's $1.23 per hour job ( Jim's draw divided by 24/7/365 = $1.23 per hour). And yes , I told him Jim gets that much while sleeping too. The Moderators ultimately banned this poster, but we all had a few good laughs in the process. Ridicule really is the fastest, most effective way to shoot down a jerk. You have to think about how to do it, but if you will, we all will have a lot more fun.

A year or so ago I recommened we post all attacks to an imaginary Freeper, "Nincompoop" We could even get this guy his own Home Page, where we could go to look for the best put down of the day, and get many, many chuckles from all the shots this poor turkey will take. : )

All kidding aside, it seems to me that the administrators have the power already to clean up the FREEP. It requires no in-depth study of linguistics to determine the personal attacks and dispatch them accordingly. The abuse button does wonders, but so does a watchful round of FREEP administrators who keep in mind (unlike certain other such sites with which many enough of us were only too familiar, a short while back) to remind such assailants that removing their abuse and assault from these arterials is not quite the same thing as rejecting their ideas or their opinion.

I hasten to stress that I am not speaking of one's point of view. Regarding that, I side with Voltaire: I reject what you say but defend to the death your right to say it. And, to believe it. But that does not bind me or anyone else concurrently to accept the manner in which you say it. Randy is dandy, so far as the lingo goes, but the divide between randy comment and character assassination is a very firm one, and only too many among us have crossed it repeatedly, and with no regard whatsoever for the dignity of the targeted. Leave that crap to the fever-swamp forums on the left. We were (are) presumed to know better.

I like this place fine the way it is. Most people are civil, some are not but they get sorted out by their peers. For the worst of the worst, FR's patented technology of pipelining sub-kiloton nuclear charges to offending Freepers' IP numbers seems to help.
