Sum Of All Fears...Horrible Beyond Words

Just came in from the 12:20 AM showing of Sum Of All Fears. I am going to make this short and sweet. It could possibly be the biggest waste of time and money ever put on screen. Completely full of false info in the case of these actual events and it made anyone who was on the right wing seem like they prayed for doomsday.

Also made the Muslim who originally found the bomb from the shot down Israeli plane and sold it on the black market...the hero in the end because he gave up the buyer's name.

I could write for an hour about all of the things that were awful and wrong about this movie but why bother? I mean Ben Affleck aka Jack Ryan managed to outlive a nuclear blast and still use his cell phone and find his girlfriend at the same time!

About 1 minute total of explosion scenes....that is it. WASTE OF TIME!

How Clancy allows his name still connected to this...beyond me. He just doesn't care after it leaves his hands.

Clancy is a wise professional. He understands how business is done. The writer gets $$$ and promo for his book, and that's it.

Hollywood didn't need Clancy (or any other novelist) to create a film. They could just as easily write this film from scratch. So if they're willing to toss some money Clancy's way (a high six, or maybe even a low seven digit figure) why not take it?

I would.

I can't disagree with your assessment of the movie, but I would like to add that there was one REALITY CHECK message that the movie conveys. This is the message: TERRORISM CAN HAPPEN ANYTIME, ANYWHERE and to ANYBODY. ARE WE PREPARED?!

I loved the book. When I heard they were going to turn it into a movie, I was over-joyed. Then I heard they were going to change the plot to keep from offending the arabs and muslims who had just knocked down the Twin Towers. Then to add insult to injury, I heard they were going to cast Ben Aflack as Jack Ryan (having just been severely disappointed by the screwing over of a potentially epoch movie - Pearl Harbor - I coudn't see it working). I resolved then that I would not go see the movie.

As for Clancy, I heard that he had fought the changes, but that since his check cleared, he had no real say in it; that if he came out against the final version, he would be sued for any losses - or something to that effect. I can't vouch for the veracity of the story, but I tend to believe it. I have heard credible stories about his run-ins with Harrison Ford (grade A Lib) over changes that were attempted in previous Clancy book/movies.

Thanks for confirming my decision to boycot the movie. I hope others do as well. I'm tired of hollywad deciding what is and is not good for us to see on screen - especially when political correctness is involved.

BIG PING!

Just saw the film (9:30 PM). Plot and character development were a little hard to swallow at times. Expected much more from the special effects department - nuke blast scenes were weak - too much left to the imagination, not enough carnage, in my opinion. This will not last more that 3-4 weeks in the theaters, Ill bet.

The movie is a cowardly liberal bed-wetting PC bucket of slop as well as an abhorrent betrayal of the true nature and aspect of the book: middle eastern Islamic fundamental terrorism as a threat to the US. Of course as we all know too well, that would be "racial profiling", so whitey must assume the role of bad guy once again.

Personally, I never expect a movie to live up to a good book. "The Sum" was one of my favorites. I won't see the flick…I have a perfect one in my head now.

Do you have one of his books in hardback handy? Good. Go get it. Turn to the back jacket cover. See that big grin on Clancy's' face? You know why he's grinnin? It's because he's makin' beaucoup money. He writes his yarns, and sells them like dry goods. You pay the money for his movie rights, you can do whatever you want with it, he just keeps on grinnin'.

Lot`sa folks are forgetting other parts of the book like the IDF officer that murders a Palestian protester, the fact that Israeli planes would fly with nukes, and how the book ends,Jerusalem controlled by a tripart made up of Jews, Arabs, and Christians. No way that could be made into a movie in this country.

It`s a MOVIE!It`s based on Clancy`s book.It`s a work of fiction.

Clancy's books are well researched and all have technically and politically plausible plots and military actions. His biggest fan base is within the ranks of the military because of the realism in his books and his understanding of weapons systems, their capabilities and actual uses.

In fact, Clancy was grilled by the pentagon and several other agencies responsible for keeping military secrets, secret, because of his accurate knowledge and some of the dots he connected in the plot in The Hunt For Red October.

What Hollywood does with it after they buy the rights is not something he or any author can control. They can argue, but thats all.

Yeah, I am wondering what Affleck will be like in Daredevil. I just hope it doesnt suck too bad. Saw a small, poorly lighted photo of him in costume, looked pretty cool. I guess we will have to see...JFK

Because it is extremely realistic, and well done. The movie contains numerous subplots, and the techniques are quite believable. The authors did take some liberties with recent history (RR, Waco), but they preserve the essence of injustice that so aptly characterizes each event. Superat inter alia, the conclusion of the film is eye-opening.

(Hey, I could write for the Times! .... Nah)
