[history]
PANAMA CITY, Fla.--NAACP leaders want to know why only 11 percent of businesses and residents on the city's Martin Luther King Boulevard use the name of the slain civil rights leader for their adresses.
Most of the businesses continue to use the names of Cove Boulevard or State 77, as the road was called before it was renamed eight years ago.

I don't think I will ever understand. The NAACP will not leave anyone in peace to go about their lives without some sort of damn "BATTLE", here's hoping they get a good one in the near future, one they will never forget!!!

NAACP Investigating Why Panama City Ignores MLK BoulevardHere's a possibility: Maybe they're not using it because it's the name of a street in virtually EVERY other town in EVERY other state. Maybe they just want some originality to their address.
To: Mom_Grandmother
Nothing like trying to force people to pay homage, even if they don't feel like it.

One imagines that the businesses are afraid to give potential customers the idea they might be entering a dangerous neighborhood, or patronizing a poorly run business. Such are the stereotypes, unfortunate as they are. It will take more than PC enforcement to change them.
To: Mom_Grandmother
Hmmm. I don't suppose it occurred to the naacp that people don't want to use their coerced address.

I've heard it said that the ONE street to avoid in any city is the one named MLK. For safety reasons... Seems to hold true in my neck of the woods.

And as often as not, MLK is in a ghetto where you wouldn't want to locate a business anyway.

Seems to hold true in my neck of the woods. True for all the places I know as well.

LOL........that's true, at least somewhat, here in Balt. One side of MLK is really bad....wouldn't want to go there at night.

"Maybe they just want some originality to their address." You said "theirs", if this street were "theirs", there would be no problem. The "residents" of Cove Boulevard want to be left alone, they liked the name of their street the way it was. If it had been a "majority" of residents that wanted this change, that would be different. The NAACP thrives on getting in peoples faces with their "demands" and they will continue to do so until folks put their foot down and screams at them "MAKE ME".

Whats really amazing is the NAACP has the resources to monitor this kind of thing. Tedious little busybodies.

Man, if only Florida residents used the right street name all the ills of black Americans would be solved.
To: FourtySeven
FourtySeven, I sure hope you forgive me, I missread your post, you were talking about the residents and I missread it.

Nobody in NYC refers to Sixth Avenue as "Avenue of the Americas." It's still good old Sixth Avenue. I'm sure if they looked hard enough, NAALCP could find some reason to protest this usage too.

This one is something else. I wonder if the USPO will deliver mail to Cove Boulevard or State 77?

The name was changed eight years ago, yes, the USPO has and is still delivering. If the mayor will not force the residents to change addresses, what do the NAACP think they can do to "force" them to? Thoughts anyone! How far do you think this group would/will go to force anyone to their way of thinking?
To: Mom_Grandmother
And when they're done with that, they can study why millions of New Yorkers still - after more than 45 years - refer to the Avenue of the Americas as Sixth Avenue.

How nice of you to apologize though! What a refreshing change to see on a bbs or message board. :)
Actually, to tell you the truth, I'm so blind to criticism (have such a huge ego maybe? hehe) that I didn't even take it as any kind of criticism..........and now that I re read it, DANG WHAT WERE.... LOL
Just jokin.......again don't worry about it. ;)
