Well I have to admit that I was was one of the early posters today that said this format sucked...BUT after wandering around the board this afternoon, clicking, reading and LEARNING...I have to admit I think it will work well.
Hey a dozen years ago what did we have.....NADA....then along came personal computers and a service called Prodigy..hell the speeds were so slow it would take an hour just to navigate a few posts...provided that you could find someone else that had a computer.
We had a board on Prodigy discussing the Gulf War...then the Clinton election...Carl Limbacher (Carl of Oyster Bay) was a regular poster...and Ken (can't remember your handle but I know you're on FR) from Boston. Then along came FR, Computers have changed dramatically over the years and some fools like me always buy the latest one...Why shouldn't FreeRepublic change along with the times...I think if you spend some time looking and learning you will find that it is better than what we had and will continue to get better as it goes along

Yeah, I'll learn it too. But tell me why it's better, and not just different.
Try to be specific.

OK, I'll give you just one example. The number one complaint of non-FReepers who come here to read / learn is "Gee, like, um............you know, I can't figure out where to go to see or join the discussion; I mean, you know, like it's so
confusing.....!"
This new format knocks that one down in spades. That's just for starters (in case you can't tell............I like it.)
To: Blueflag
It's more customizable. Took me a while to figure it out but once I did I liked the way the sidebars operate. John has already taken care of most of my complaints about the graphics and number of posts shoing in the sidebars.
I also think the menus are easier to work with, but that's just a personal preference.

I can't seem to find the place where I can just get a quick and complete overview of the latest news, just the headlines, I like knowing what is in the news even though I may not want to read the whole article. Is there a breaking news for all categories?...or what? (...and don't even tell me that I will need to 'program' anything!)

Click on Topics in the upper right hand corner; they will be displayed. Then pick one. Breaking News is near the bottom.

another example: you know the moment you have been replied to, just like when we got FReepmail. Before, you would have to view replies every few minutes to find out... and you might not have any replies for a loooong time. Now you don't have to wonder and waste time checking.
To: Blueflag
A couple..
- You now are notified if you have a reply
- You can now customize your sidebars to whichever topics you want to view
- The Thread page has remained essentially the same

Since no one has replied to anything I posted today, how do I know I have a reply?

You now are notified if you have a reply
That's been around for months.
The big problem is that the site is now very S-L-O-W.
And I have DSL... pity those on dial-up.

"Since no one has replied to anything I posted today, how do I know I have a reply?" Look to your left!!!!!

Here is your reply! I don't like the new format as I don't want full articles on my self-search page and I do want short clips of what an article is about on latest posts which don't seem to be compatible. My question is why fix something that isn't broken! I just want to log on and see the Latest Articles. My two cents worth! I liked the Old FR better!

Open up a seperate browser window and paste in:
http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/notify
You'll hear a chime and get a notice whenever a new post or e-mail comes in to you.

Yep, if you had it activated.... now it's automatic as far as I can see.... Slow I haven't noticed any change at all and I'm on dial up with a 56k modem operating about 33k

Thank you (looking to my left) - it DOES change!! That's pretty nifty!
To: WIladyconservative
Look up in the right hand corner of the Latest Post page and you'll see "New Posts To You" in bright or on the left Sidebar and see "New Comment" lit up if you have a new comment you haven't looked at... No need to do anything as this is automatic.

Well, I'm happy for you, but that's not the case with me, and it's only on FR.
This is a widespread complaint I've seen with the new format, for cable, DSL, and dial-up.

To: Blueflag
But tell me why it's better, and not just different. One little detail: On the screen for your freepmail, in the left margin, there are several options. One is to group the mail by sender. Very convenient. And very helpful for cleaning out old unneeded mail.
