The Shallowness of Clinton

By Evan Coyne Maloney

www.brain-terminal.com

I recently wrote an article in which I referred to Bill Clinton as a shallow man, and was asked to explain myself by a reader who went on to claim that Bill Clinton "righted the wrongs of active exclusion, willful ignorance, and offensive pity" and "[led] the nation through its longest period of peacetime expansion of economic, social, and individual opportunity."

What I've never understood about the Clinton apologists is that they apparently value talk over action. Other than make speeches filled with feel-good rhetoric, what did Bill Clinton actually do? People may have felt comforted by his words, believed that he cared about them and felt their pain, but in the end, all of Clinton's talk amounted to nothing.

Whenever I talk to supporters of Bill Clinton, I ask them to list the things he did. Most people can't name a single thing, and instead credit him with presiding over an expanding economy, as though coincidence--the dumb luck of having his presidency aligned with the business cycle--somehow proves that he caused it to happen. But what did he do that was so beneficial to the economy? For that matter, what actions did he take to "right the wrongs of active exclusion"? Don't ask, don't tell? Hardly the epitome of inclusiveness.

My memory may be failing me, but when I try to recall the achievements of the Clinton presidency, I can name only two of any significance: Welfare Reform and NAFTA. Despite the fact that neither of these bills originated from the Clinton Administration, I do give him credit for signing them; most Democrats would not have signed either bill. On the other hand, neither of these bills could pass Congress until the Republicans took over in 1994. So I guess the real achievement of the Clinton presidency was scaring enough people during his first two years in office that he put the Senate and the House of Representatives in the hands of the Republicans for the first time since 1954. But I doubt the fans of Clinton would celebrate that monumental achievement.

Lucky Bubble

As far as the economy goes, there is no doubt that Bill Clinton presided over a favorable economy and a remarkable expansion in the stock market. But remember that most of this expansion was due to the rise of the Internet and the resulting speculation on Internet stocks. Remember when the economy started to go south? That's right, just when the Internet bubble burst. Al Gore's attempt to take credit for inventing the Internet notwithstanding, nobody in their right mind would claim that the Clinton Administration was somehow responsible for the Internet boom.

But if you insist on crediting Bill Clinton with the rise of the stock market, then you must also blame him for the "irrational exuberance" that led to its collapse. You must therefore also blame him for the recession. Otherwise, you're crediting him for handing out the drinks at the party and blaming his successor--the guy who has to clean up the mess--for everyone's hangover the next day.

Getting back to my claim that Bill Clinton is a shallow man, it seems to me that someone who squanders an opportunity to achieve greatness and instead uses his power for nothing more than the satisfaction of his own wants and needs is shallow. Bill Clinton is pathologically self-absorbed, which is why he constantly found himself bungling into scandal after scandal.

Now, one may scream that there was a vast right-wing conspiracy to bring down Bill Clinton; even if you believe that nonsense, you have to wonder why Bill Clinton went out of his way to hand his enemies so much ammunition on such a regular basis. And when I say scandal, I'm not even thinking about the "lying under oath" thing, which Clinton supporters dismiss as inconsequential. I'm talking about other serious stuff, all of which is well-known to people who were paying attention, but most of which was underreported due to the media's focus on the more salacious--and therefore media-friendly--Clinton scandals.

Scandal After Scandal

If you'll recall: Under Bill Clinton, the White House became a glorified motel, where the Lincoln Bedroom was rented out to contributors who coughed up enough dough. Military secrets ended up in the hands of the Chinese, who laundered money that ended up in the hands of the Democratic National Committee just in time for Clinton's re-election campaign. Al Gore was dispatched to hold illegal fundraisers at Buddhist temples, where he collected money from dozens of nuns who--despite having taken vows of poverty--each managed to produce a $5,000 check for Clinton's re-election. His top fundraiser, Terry McAuliffe, the current head of the aforementioned DNC, made $18,000,000 from a $100,000 investment in Global Crossing, now bankrupt and under investigation for shady government contracts during the Clinton Administration. When Enron's Ken Lay was staying in the Lincoln Bedroom during the Clinton Administration, Enron came to ask the federal government to underwrite foreign loans on 20 different occasions; on 19 of those 20 occasions, the Clinton Administration said yes, to the tune of $2 billion dollars. And let us not forget about selling presidential pardons to drug-runners and fat-cat tax-cheat felons on the lam in Europe. Or the looting of White House furniture for their new home, which is unfortunately located in my home state. And all that's without even getting into Whitewater, the Travel Office firings, or the perjury scandal.

Bill Clinton is a low-life thief, a petty swindler, and a smooth-talking scam artist more suited for Tammany Hall than the White House. But I will admit that Bill Clinton was a man of action, as long as that action involved greasing his palms (or anything other body part for that matter) or furnishing his house. Somehow, Bill Clinton found the time to conduct all of that "business", but he was too busy to take Osama bin Laden when the Sudanese government offered to hand him over to us in 1996. Think about it: we wouldn't be chasing bin Laden around the globe right now if Clinton had focused a little more on taking care of the threats against us and a little less on figuring out every conceivable way that he could cash in on his power or use it to get women.

Depends on What the Meaning of "Peace" Is

Which reminds me...as far as giving Clinton credit for presiding over a time of peace, what kind of peace was it? During the Clinton Administration, there were 6 major terrorist attacks against the U.S. which left over 415 dead and 6,500 injured. It seems to me that it's very easy to maintain the illusion of peace by ignoring the dangers that surround us. You may look back fondly at the 1990s as a time of peace, but it was a peace during which we relaxed while our enemies were getting stronger and preparing to annihilate us. That's a pretty shallow peace if you ask me.

Bill Clinton is shallow because he spoke often of his convictions but did nothing to realize them. He's shallow because he was given remarkable gifts and the opportunity to do great things with them, yet he achieved nothing substantial. In the end, his presidency amounted to little more than talk and corruption. He rarely took any action unless it somehow benefitted him. But whenever action mattered for the good of the nation, Bill Clinton was nowhere to be found. And that is why the man who spent the final days of his presidency fretting about his legacy will find it to be recorded quite accurately by history: Bill Clinton is a shallow, failed man.

Good points, but, again, I think we should just stick to what we know is true rather than trying to spread around a lot of BS - the truth is plenty, and, ultimately, it's the right thing to do, if nothing else, we should stick to our principles. As to the quid pro quo, I always find it amusing when ANY business, especially energy, or pro-business interest group donates to anyone on the left. They certainly don't share common philosophies so why are they getting money from Enron, GC, Loral, whoever, if not for preferential treatment/access? You don't see trial lawyers, environmental groups and unions giving this kind of money to Republicans do you? Seems to be a fairly narrow phenomenon with Big Business and Dems, anyone have any thoughts as to why? You don't see the NRA donating to gun-grabbers, pro-lifers donating to pro-choicers (and vice versa), anti-tax crusaders donating to socialists and so on. Just Big Business in bed with anyone who wants to sleep with 'em - Republicans/Conservatives/Libertarians (all one of him) who ARE philosphically aligned with them and Liberal Dems who, clearly, are not...

(By the way, Badray, liked the jab at Fritz, well done!)

There's your list of Clinton accomplishments, all done just in his FIRST TWO YEARS!

Compare Clinton's record of reversing years of economic decline so that 6 million new jobs were created, and turning around Bush I's $290+ billion budget deficit, with Dumbya's record of persistent economic recession, no new jobs and a stagnant DJIA.

Any honest comparison favors Clinton-Gore over the Gin Twins' father. But does honesty really matter when these figures are presented to closed minds?

Speaking of the Gin Twins (stay up all night thinking of that one?) I think I will have a martini.

It just kills you that there aren't any sordid scandals, doesn't it? You were SURE there would be something by now. Ha! You just have to drag the twins into this. Pathetic.

Have a nice evening. I am leaving for dinner.

So here's a list that MurrayMom would be proud of:

1. Created almost 6 million new jobs in his first 2 years of office.
2. As part of the 1993 Economic Plan, President Clinton cut taxes on 15 million low-income families and made tax cuts available to 90 percent of small businesses, while raising taxes on just 1.2 percent of the wealthiest taxpayers.
3. President Clinton signed into law the largest deficit reduction plan in history, resulting in over $600 billion in deficit reduction. The deficit is going down for 3 years in a row for the first time since Harry Truman was president.
4. The President signed into law the Brady Bill, which imposes a five-day waiting period on handgun purchases so that background checks can be done to help keep handguns away from criminals.
5. The President's Crime Bill will put 100,000 new police officers on the street. More than 1,200 communities have already received grants to hire 27,000 additional officers.
6. The Crime Bill also punishes criminals by expanding the number of offenses eligible for the death penalty and implementing the "three-strikes-and-you're-out" provision.
7. And, the Bill banned the manufacture of 19 specific types of deadly assault weapons, while simultaneously protecting hunters' rights by exempting over 650 hunting rifles.
8. President Clinton signed the Family and Medical Leave Act. The law, which covers over 42 million Americans, offers workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-guaranteed leave for child birth, adoption, or personal or family illness.
9. President Clinton expanded the Earned Income Tax Credit to cut the taxes of 15 million working families with incomes of $27,000 or less.
10. President Clinton granted waivers to 25 states -- half the nation -- providing for comprehensive welfare reform demonstrations. 11. President Clinton ordered the U.S. Justice Department to conduct the first-ever crackdown on deadbeat parents who refuse to accept financial responsibility for their own children.
12. Signed an Executive Order cracking down on federal employees who owe child support.
13. The Clinton Administration forged a bipartisan coalition to pass NAFTA, after concluding tough negotiations on side agreements covering workers' rights, the environment, and import surges. Exports to Mexico rose 23 percent in the first 11 months of 1994.
14. President Clinton led the fight to pass GATT, which lowers tariffs worldwide by $744 billion over ten years -- the largest international tax cut in history. GATT cuts tariffs on manufactured goods by more than one-third overall and eliminates tariffs in major markets in a number of sectors in which the U.S. is particularly competitive.
15. To enhance European security and stability, the Clinton Administration proposed the Partnership for Peace program, offering former Soviet republics and Central/East European states closer ties with NATO. Already, 22 nations have signed on, since NATO's adoption of the program in January, 1994.
16. As of May, 1994, nuclear missiles in Russia and the United States are no longer targeted against any country. And, as a result of other Clinton Administration efforts, the Ukraine is ahead of schedule in reaching the goal of transferring 1,500 nuclear warheads to Russia for dismantlement.
17. President Clinton peacefully restored democracy to Haiti, curbing the violence that threatened tens of thousands of Haitians, securing our borders, and upholding our commitments and the commitments made to us in the process.
Can Freepers find the holes in these Clinton accomplishments?

Actually ditzymom the tax-cut once again has led to a recovery and more tax revenue. Don't count your deficits before they are hatched because there may still be a surplus which will require more tax refunds. He has renewed patriotism and American pride in a country that was in dire need. He has shown himself to be a surperior leader to your focus group, key phrased push polling stained president. How does 85% approval ratings sound to you??? I'll bet you can't come up with 3 accomplishments for your hero. I will start you with one, a Republican House and Senate. Now you only need 2 others!

Pray for GW and the Truth

Can Freepers find the holes in these Clinton accomplishments?

Ya, easy.

1. Created almost 6 million new jobs in his first 2 years of office.

6 million new jobs were created. Clinton wasn't responsible for any of them. He did lay off some people though.

2. As part of the 1993 Economic Plan, President Clinton cut taxes on 15 million low-income families and made tax cuts available to 90 percent of small businesses, while raising taxes on just 1.2 percent of the wealthiest taxpayers.

The bottom 50% of US income earners pay less than 5% of all taxes. His "tax cut" wasn't a tax cut at all, it was a welfare payment made through "tax refunds". Essentially, these people were "refunded" MORE than the taxes they paid in.

3. President Clinton signed into law the largest deficit reduction plan in history, resulting in over $600 billion in deficit reduction. The deficit is going down for 3 years in a row for the first time since Harry Truman was president.

Yes, he did sign it...and it formed part of the campaign the democrats used in 1994. "Republicans favor starving children" (Complaints about Increases in School lunch programs) "Republicans want retired people to live off dog food" (Complaints about Increases in Social Security Payments) "Republicans want to poison the water and the air." (Complaints about Increases in EPA programs), and on and on and on.... So...who was *really* responsible for those reductions? I suggest the people who suffered the attacks for doing so were.

4. The President signed into law the Brady Bill, which imposes a five-day waiting period on handgun purchases so that background checks can be done to help keep handguns away from criminals.

This unconstitutional law is not an accomplishment, but merely an indicator of Clinton's more tyrannical designs against the US citizen.

5. The President's Crime Bill will put 100,000 new police officers on the street. More than 1,200 communities have already received grants to hire 27,000 additional officers.

The President's Crime Bill put about 27,000 new police officers on the street sum total over 8 years, although this is a high-end estimate. Most of the 1200 communities discovered the ponzi scheme design of the program before it brankrupted their communities and decided to opt out early.

6. The Crime Bill also punishes criminals by expanding the number of offenses eligible for the death penalty and implementing the "three-strikes-and-you're-out" provision.

Three strikes and you're out was a Republican proposal Clinton opposed. He signed it to pressure Democrats to support "Line Item Veto" powers, and I believe he said as much at the signing ceremony if you will roll the tape, Bruno.

7. And, the Bill banned the manufacture of 19 specific types of deadly assault weapons, while simultaneously protecting hunters' rights by exempting over 650 hunting rifles.

The ban was a *cosmetic* ban that had no relation to a gun's use, function, or propensity to be involved in crime. Banning guns in general was one of Clinton's favorite items, not coincidentally, most tyrants throughout history have favored similar bans.

8. President Clinton signed the Family and Medical Leave Act. The law, which covers over 42 million Americans, offers workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-guaranteed leave for child birth, adoption, or personal or family illness.

This law put several companies out of business. It and it's follow-up RISA was responsible for 15,000 people with 4 and 6 year degrees losing their jobs. It also drove almost 300 health care companies into bankruptcy. My wife was one of that 15,000.

9. President Clinton expanded the Earned Income Tax Credit to cut the taxes of 15 million working families with incomes of $27,000 or less.

This would have been more meaningful if it had been a tax cut. As it was, it was abused by the IRS to justify additional audits, like ours.

10. President Clinton granted waivers to 25 states -- half the nation -- providing for comprehensive welfare reform demonstrations.

Clinton had little choice as this was one veto-proof proposal from Republicans. It was his hope that the waivers would prove that welfare reform would fail. It didn't.

11. President Clinton ordered the U.S. Justice Department to conduct the first-ever crackdown on deadbeat parents who refuse to accept financial responsibility for their own children.

And subsequently jailed thousands of men (no women) whom had a working relationship with their spouses who were actually contributing positively to society. It did manage to nail about a 3 dozen actual deadbeats, but mostly it jailed people whom had worked out a way to pay, or were completely destitute, but gradually recovering from their divorces.

12. Signed an Executive Order cracking down on federal employees who owe child support.

This was never enforced to my knowledge. It is Fluff with no substance.

NAFTA and GATT aren't actually different things, but this did manage to open the US up to international lawsuits based on US responses to anti-Capitalist actions taken by anti-Capitalist nations.

15. To enhance European security and stability, the Clinton Administration proposed the Partnership for Peace program, offering former Soviet republics and Central/East European states closer ties with NATO. Already, 22 nations have signed on, since NATO's adoption of the program in January, 1994.

This destabalized much of Eastern Europe. The Balkans are still fighting.

The US was the only adherent to this bill. The nuclear missiles Russia stopped targetting were dud warheads that were inoperable due to a lack of funding to keep them maintained. Essentially, Clinton gave something for nothing. Please note, during this time, China *did* have the US west-coast targetted by a half-dozen nuclear warheads. It is not up to 2 dozen and climbing rapidly as a result of the transfer of technology by Clinton's act of declassifying nuclear secrets and the work of O'Leary and company to ensure China was aware of those declassifications.

17. President Clinton peacefully restored democracy to Haiti, curbing the violence that threatened tens of thousands of Haitians, securing our borders, and upholding our commitments and the commitments made to us in the process.

Newsflash: Haiti is still an extremely violent place. He replaced a government that was friendly to the US and was introducing concepts of freedom via the marketplace with a "democracy" that saw the slaughter of those people supporting freedom in favor of a socialist economy.

Fat drunk Ted would never say something like that to Scumbag privately, because even he knows it's 100% bullsh!t. That statement was meant for the fawning media and the hordes of MurryMoms out there that swallow such crap.
