Arkansas Food Tax

The libertarians will have a rally for the elimination of the Food Tax. It will be 6:30-7:30 pm on thursday, march 28, 2002 at Little Rock Main Library, 2nd floor 100 Rock St. Little Rock, AR. Featured speakers will be: Dave Elswick of KARN, Nora Harris, Tim Jacob, & Jerry Peters.

I don't like everything about these guys but we do need to get rid of this tax. I believe that Nora Harris was a speaker at one of our Arkansas Freerepublic meetings.

Why would any state dare to tax food? At that point, the state is basically saying drop dead and showing its true greed.

There are 10 states that tax groceries, including Arkansas.

Food and groceries are not synonymous. I already knew that some of the items on my trips to the supermarket are taxable. But from this article it seems they are talking about food only (i.e., milk, bread, water, etc.)

South Carolina does too. The plus side is that your real estate/school taxes are 20% of those elsewhere in the country. I guess if you save you grocery reciepts you could deduct them when itemizing.

Makes about as much sense as states who charge highway use fee taxes on fuel sales in aircraft. It costs me $300~$400 to fill up. 32% of that is for highway uses which airplanes don't use. Again, if you save your receipts, you can itemize it all out. But if you are some of the 80% who don't bother, the amount of money you lose is staggering. You don't exactly find the states making an effort to make you aware of this. One year when we were flying a lot, it came to $7000.00.

Perfect food tax proponent=Jerald Naddler. Why don't he and Hillary advocate the much needed money. She can wear a two piece bikini and Naddler can wear a Speedo at the press conference.

I never heard of a food tax. Well, some things are taxed. alcohol, tobacco, and I think soda pop and candy.

Viewed in isolation, a sales tax on food is regressive. But the rest of our tax structure -- from income taxes to capital gains taxes to property taxes to "gas guzzler" surtaxes to estate taxes, and on and on -- is so punitive to the achievers and the risk-takers that I have no problem with a touch of regressive taxation. It tends to counterbalance, in a very trivial way, the redistribution of wealth which has come to characterize our overall tax structure.

Groceries have been taxed in Tennessee since the inception of the sales tax. While it doesn't seem fair on the surface, it does help keep property and other taxes (comparatively) low, and has up until now allowed us to escape a state income tax, although the demofascists in the legislature and our RINO governor are conspiring to change that situation.

While income tax advocates claim the sales tax is a disproportionate burden on the "poor", they conveniently forget that most of the "poor" buy groceries with food stamps and are not subject to the sales tax. For others, the sales tax on groceries one of the few occasions for them to participate in the funding of the (bloated) state government.

You are saying you are happy to see a tax on the poor because the rich are already highlly taxed. That is disgusting. All tax is too much. It all needs to be reduced.

When we lived in Oklahoma in '99 there was still a tax on food sales. Is there still a food tax in Oklahoma?
