Senate is "debating" the upcoming cloture vote on Campaign Finance Reform. Vote is scheduled for 10 minutes before 1PM today.
Senators Hutchison of Texas and McConnell of Kentucky have spoken on the opposing side so far.
Senator Paul Wellstone now speaking FOR Campaign Finance Reform
Very good answer.
I said on another thread - this is their last kick in my face if the stupid Repubs who could stop this (oh, but they don't want to have to spend the night there, do they ......as tinpot tiny timmy threatens them with doing.
I love and respect President Bush and am very happy he is in there instead of the Goron.
But should he not veto this monstrosity - the poor Republicans are going to get that much poorer.
It will simply take the wind out of any intention to work hard to elect anybody except one or two conservatives here and there who might have a chance to be elected.
They cannot stop election fraud and they are now going to vote for the television networks to have the power to tell everyone about the candidates instead of issues groups being able to inform voters about stands on issues. And, by the way, the Dems never obey the laws - so this one won't stop them at all.
Lawlessness, insanity, and anarchy are ahead for this country because when Hillary is "elected" in 2004 - that insanity will be back - with a vengeance.
And these stupid Republicans are part and parcel in responsibility for this future.
Guess you can tell I am down right now re: the future of this country. Why not?
THE ONLY THING I CAN DO IS STOP TAKING THE FACE KICKS. That's what I am doing, stupid Republicans!
Oh, listen to Widow Carnahan...telling us how GREAT our country is..arghhhhh.
That's exactly the remark and reason I sent back to the RNC donation request mailer. They had the nerve to ask me what they had done to displease me and why was I not supporting them.
Why do I need to PAY Republicans to act like liberal RATS.
Anyway, the following illustration from Neal Boortz is one of the best examples I've seen of why CFR is such a disaster to our rights.
....In case that doesnt happen you need to know how to deal with some of the new rules.
I want to draw you an illustration here so Ill use a good local Atlanta controversy. Its called the Northern Arc. The Northern Arc is a huge limited access highway that is being proposed North of Atlanta. It will carve an arc through North Georgia from Interstate 75 on the West to Interstate 85 on the East. The Northern Arc would be good for Atlanta because it would probably ease traffic congestion on urban interstates. It could well be bad for North Georgia because it would bring increased traffic and congestion --- and it would cut through some beautiful countryside. Many of the people who moved to North Georgia did so to escape the very congestion that the Northern Arc will bring to their communities.
So --- what does this all have to do with the campaign finance reform act? Glad you asked.
Lets say that community activists in North Georgia are steadfastly opposed to the Arc. Lets also say, for the sake of argument, that the editorial writers of Atlantas newspapers are just as steadfastly FOR the arc.
Now well bring the election into the picture. Well say you have an incumbent congressman in North Georgia who supports the arc and is ready to seek federal funds to make sure it gets built. This congressman has the full support of the Atlanta newspapers and they are planning on running a huge editorial next week to support his reelection.
The incumbents challenger is opposed to the Arc. If he gets elected he will block any federal spending on the project.
You and a group of your fellow citizens have organized against the Arc. You have collected some contributions from like-minded neighbors and you want to do something to support the challenger. You know that the Atlanta newspapers and television stations are expressing their strong support for the incumbent, so you decide to fight back with some publicity of your own. You go to the three largest television stations in North Georgia and tell them that your group wants to run some ads opposing the Arc and supporting your candidate for congress.
Now --- now is when you learn about the campaign finance reform act. These television stations tell you that federal law does not permit them to run your ads. The election is less than 60 days away, and you ad is considered to be an issue ad and since it is paid for by someone other than the candidate it is illegal.
OK, fine! Youll just give the money to the candidate and HE can run the ad! Sorry, no go there either. The ads are expensive. Way above the campaign contribution limits.
Sorry youre just out of luck. Those newspapers can just keep right on editorializing for the incumbent, while you sit there with your hands tied.
What do you think the purpose of this law was anyway?
Thanks for the Thread!
He's probably giving a press conference. The thought of his ugly mug on TV crowing about what a victory this is for the American people is enough to make me ill!
Interesting the priorities the Senate has, isn't it? Energy...nah, Border Security...nah, Faith Based...nah; LET'S TALK ABOUT OURSELVES INSTEAD AND DO CFR! What a bunch of self-serving pythons!
HEY SENATORS, ya want some real campaign finance reform? How about TERM LIMITS!
Poor Babs, she just can't take the criticism...and its so unfair that it costs money to run for office.
If he doesn't, I am going to be very disappointed.
