JENERETTE announces U.S. Congressional Bid Intentions
SCRepublican | Saturday 16 March 2002 | JENERETTE announces U.S. Congressional Bid Intentions

SUBJECT: JENERETTE announces U.S. Congressional Bid Intentions

Van Jenerette of North Myrtle Beach; a Policy Advisor to U.S. Rep. Henry Brown, has announced his intentions to seek the newly redrawn U.S. Congressional seat if the new lines do not include Congressman Brown's home turf of Hanahan in the new district.

"The courts and the redistricting lawsuit have left Horry County in a real congressional limbo," said Jenerette after a meeting with advisors and supporters late Friday. "We are one of the fastest growing areas of the entire country and we need our own voice in Washington."

Jenerette, a member of U.S. Rep. Brown's Military/ Veterans Advisory Council, is an Army veteran and the father of six children. He is a college professor of Political Science and Sociology and was a former aide to four-term U.S. Congressman Arthur Ravenel Jr.

"Congressman Brown has been a very capable and dedicated representative for the 1st District," said Jenerette. "But, if we are fortunate enough to become a dominate player in a new Congressional District - we need to jump into the fight."

Jenerette garnered nearly 25% of the Horry County vote and placed third in a field of six candidates in the hotly contested Congressional Republican primary in 2000.

"Horry County should have never been gerrymandered out of the old 6th District," said Jenerette. "Historically and geographically we were cut from the same cloth and have the similar economic interest mix that includes tourism, agriculture, higher education and light industry."

If Jenerette runs and is elected, Jenerette would be the first U.S. Congressman from Horry County since his first cousin, John Jenrette had the old 6th District seat nearly a quarter of a century ago.

"I know I can really make a difference if the voters send me to Washington," Jenerette said. "I've worked in government just enough to have a grasp of what works and what doesn't, but I haven't been so deep into the political system that I forgot what day-to-day life is all about for most of us."

Jenerette, who is a former U.S. Army officer, volunteered to return to active duty immediately following the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and is currently on the Army's mobilization list. He served as an Infantry Officer and has a background in Counter-guerilla and counter-terrorism operations.

Jenerette and his wife Katherine have a 8-year old son, Christian, a 5-year old daughter, Benjamin, a 4-year old daughter, Drake and they have a 7-month old daughter, Wilson. Van also has a son, Vandon IV, who is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, and a married daughter, Suyong, who lives in Colorado.

Van has spoken at both of the South Carolina Rallies. He is a dynamic personality who loves his Country, Constitution and Family. He will do a wonderful job. He and Katherine are posters here at FR and members of the South Carolina Chapter. We wish him the best of luck.

I heard Mr. Jenerette speak at one of the SC freeper events. He gave a little speech to us and he was riveting! Best of luck to him and to you, too, Dixie. I know you'll be lending him a hand (and an arm and a leg and heart and soul!)

Van is a riveting speaker and very passionate in his delivery. He has impressed me since the first time I heard him speak at the first rally when we had Linda Tripp as our guest here.

One thing that he said at the last meeting in the summer of 2001, has stuck in my mind and (I am paraphrasing this) "...the two most dangerous things invented by man are the printing press and the Constitution...". That is as best as I can remember.

Good luck. I'm treasuring a state house campaign here in Mid-Michigan. The seat is 50% democrat(city)/50% GOP(rural).
