"Counterterrorism experts and government officials interviewed by TIME say that for all the relative calm since Sept. 11, Americas luck will probably run out again, sooner or later." "It's going to be worse, and a lot of people are going to die," warns one U.S. counterterrorism official. "I don't think there's a damn thing we're going to be able to do about it."
Read on:...That made the DRAGONFIRE report alarming. So did this: detonated in lower Manhattan, a 10-kiloton bomb would kill some 100,000 civilians and irradiate 700,000 more, flattening everything in a half-mile diameter.
The following is more information that you can use to protect yourself, and your family. Also, in your opinion, is the administration correct? Are we likely to see a ten kiloton device set off inside the country? Please keep in mind that this kind of nuke is very small, and easily carried by one or two persons, today.

---------------
Hiroshima
As many know, atomic bombs have been used only twice in warfare. The first and foremost blast site of the atomic bomb is Hiroshima. A Uranium bomb (which weighed in at over 4 & 1/2 tons) nicknamed "Little Boy" was dropped on Hiroshima August 6th, 1945. The Aioi Bridge, one of 81 bridges connecting the seven-branched delta of the Ota River, was the aiming point of the bomb. Ground Zero was set at 1,980 feet. At 0815 hours, the bomb was dropped from the Enola Gay. It missed by only 800 feet. At 0816 hours, in the flash of an instant, 66,000 people were killed and 69,000 people were injured by a 20 kiloton atomic explosion.
The point of total vaporization from the blast measured one half of a mile in diameter. Total destruction ranged at one mile in diameter. Severe blast damage carried as far as two miles in diameter. At two and a half miles, everything flammable in the area burned. The remaining area of the blast zone was riddled with serious blazes that stretched out to the final edge at a little over three miles in diameter.
On August 9th 1945, Nagasaki fell to the same treatment as Hiroshima. Only this time, a Plutonium bomb nicknamed "Fat Man" was dropped on the city. Even though the "Fat Man" missed by over a mile and a half, it still leveled nearly half the city. Nagasaki's population dropped in one split-second from 422,000 to 383,000. 39,000 were killed, over 25,000 were injured. That blast was less than 10 kilotons as well. Estimates from physicists who have studied each atomic explosion state that the bombs that were used had utilized only 1/10th of 1 percent of their respective explosive capabilities.

you guys are kidding right there is only one place for a nuclear strike, and that is washington d.c. nothing else would come close to the affect on our country, the entire elected government would be gone. along with most of the military command. this shadow government along with regional state government and military command would insure that the u.s. didn't completely fail, but this is the worst case scenario.

Key Question: WHO do we retaliate against?
Until just now, this question had me stumped. However, President Bush went out of his way to define certain countries as terrorist nations. If we are hit with a weapon of mass destruction, we have already defined the targets we will retaliate against: The Axis of Evil!
Any bets President Bush has been delivering behind the scenes messages to these nations about just what will happen if a nuke goes off in the U.S.?
Would they think he's bluffing?

Just goes further to prove that the US needs to issue a policy statement that any further terrorist attacks on American soil will result in reciprocal attacks on Medina and Mecca. This, and only this, can prevent such a calamity. No Muslim, however radical, will do anything to jeopardize these two most holy sites, as without them, Islam cannot exist. We must stop playing footsie. This is WWIII and it will go nuclear without a MAD doctrine. Unfortunately, our administration has not learned the lessons of the cold war that kept the battle in the third world and off of American and Soviet soil.

You give them too much credit. The terror cells in this country don't give a damn about Medina, Mecca or anything else. Theirs is the religion of death. Their only purpose, to kill Americans.
Nuking Muslim holy sites wouldn't faze them a bit, although it would be a good first step to wiping out their infrastructure. There's only one sure deterrent: No trials. No compassion. No tolerance. No diversity training. Just kill them. Kill them all.

We will shut all doors on visiting Arabs for the next ten years. That means attendance at universities for rich Arab students will halt overnight. Our friends in UK and Europe will likely take same stance, as well Japan and South Korea. Higher education will be limited to strictly the middle east. As for Arab businessmen who regularly come to the U.S....prepare for massive paperwork and escorted status while in the U.S. We will help the middle east back to the stone age as much as possible.
It's a nice thought, but if you thought about the 9/11 scenario before it happened, wouldn't you be inclined to think we would do the exact same thing? And yet the government reacted first and foremost by telling us how great Islam is, then restricted our freedoms and proceeded to pursue a tiny fraction of the involved terrorists. I'm not quite as optimistic here.

Revenge is sweet.

* But the intelligence community, they said, believes that al Qaeda could already control a stolen Soviet-era tactical nuclear warhead or enough weapons-grade material to fashion a functioning, if less efficient, atomic bomb.
* The likeliest source of nuclear materials, or of a warhead bought whole, is the vast complex of weapons labs and storage sites that began to crumble with the end of the Soviet Union in 1991. Russia has decommissioned some 10,000 tactical nuclear weapons since then, but it has been able to document only a fraction of the inventory.

During 60 years of the Cold War it was American policy to destroy Russia, the Soviet Bloc and possibly North Korea, Cuba and China because we couldn't target the individual Commissars who were truly our enemies individually.
The list of targets used to be called a SIOP (Single Integrated Operating Plan).
To: Dan Day
"Ah, another "seen too many bad movies" analyst"
Actually, I am only reiterating what used to be the standing US Defense policy during the Cold War. A nuke on America meant massive retaliation against the entire Soviet Bloc. Not just the launchers, not just the command centers, not just the Commissars, but all the major population centers concerned. The document listing all targets was called the Single Integrated Operating Plan or SIOP.
It may sound like a bad strategy to you, and maybe it is, but it was the best the finest minds in this country could come up with for over 60 years.

Heck no they can't do a danged thing about it, like closing our borders or deporting Muslims, naw, not a thing. I'll remember that should I survive such an attack, there wasn't a danged thing they could do.
To: Miss Marple
The possibility that terrorists have a nuke inside America could also explain why OBL has not been officially captured or KIA. We may have actually eliminated him already, but we are not announcing his demise to the world because we don't want his followers to retaliate with a nuke. GWB sounds quite confident that we will eventually find bin Laden. Perhaps in a year or two when we've cleaned out the internal terrorists, you'll here an announcement from Rumsfeld: "yes, we've finally obtained all the necessary DNA samples, done all the tests, and by golly we did in fact liquidate OBL in December of 2001. Well you know these things take some time to complete with 100% accuracy, and we really wanted to be sure."

there is a new video coming out this week or next, of bin laden

The attitude that "they just wouldn't do such a thing to America" is what got us into the WTC bomings.I never suggested that "they wouldn't do such a thing."
However, your statement does not imply the converse... In other words, "The proper attitude would prevent the WTC." This is simply not true.
The only tactic so far demonstrated effective against terrorism is citizenry vigilantism (sp?)
Think about it. Do IDF Tanks shelling villages stop suicide bombers in Israel, or did a single woman shopping for oranges with a concealed gun the other day? She took the single bad guy out.
Have F-16's flying Combat Air Patrols stopped anything (tinfoilers may disagree on Flt 93...)?? No. Consensus of evidence shows that a few independent -WELL INFORMED- (via cell phone from friends...not mass media) citizens prevented the lawless from wreaking havoc.
I won't trust this government, W or not, until they embrace the messy business of patriotic citizens defending themselves! I know it risks inciting a bunch of red-necks grabbing their deer rifles to go on rag-head patrol....but gosh darnit...when it comes down to it...that's the best last defense against this stuff America has to offer!
