NEW CLUB RECOMMENDED FOR BOARD

PARENTS/COWARD CLUB

The following statement was read by President Bengel following the action by the Board at the February 13, 2002 Board Meeting in relation to the Gay / Straight Alliance Club at Clovis High School:

Federal law, including the Equal Access Act, requires that school districts allowing school clubs on campuses treat those clubs equally without regard to the particular viewpoint of the club.  In approving the Gay Straight Alliance Club for the Clovis High School campus, the Clovis Unified School District applies the Equal Access Act without making any statement for or against the viewpoint of the Gay Straight Alliance Club.  Clovis Unified School District is satisfied that the Gay Straight Alliance Club Constitution, which advocates nonviolence, anti‑discrimination and anti‑harassment, and which does not provide for teaching of issues related to sex or sex education, is in compliance with the provisions of law requiring the District’s approval.  The Clovis Unified School District will work diligently to ensure that all of its clubs stay within the bounds of the Equal Access Act and all laws.  Other than the determination that it is legally required to approve the club, the District’s actions should not be interpreted as any indication of the District’s, or any individual Board member’s, views regarding the Club.

"It's a pleasure serving on the Board of such an outstanding district," Bengel says of her tenure on CUSD's governing board. A graduate of Dos Palos High School, Ms. Bengel received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Fashion Merchandising from California State University, Fresno. She is a local small business owner and, in the past, Ms. Bengel has been active in the Jr. League of Fresno, California Women for Agriculture, City of Hope and various District committees. Involvement in parent clubs, School Assessment and Review Teams (SART) and the Superintendent's Advisory Committee led Susan Walker to her current position on the Governing Board. In the midst of her third term, Dr. Walker feels that the Board's responsibility is to maintain a sense of unity among the community. "We are all in this together and want the best for our kids," she says about her board colleagues. Raised in Southern California, Dr. Walker received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from University of California, Riverside, a Masters of Public Health from Loma Linda University and a Doctorate of Health Science, also from Loma Linda. Working in the Nutrition and Health Science industry, raising her family and maintaining her school board responsibilities assure her an active and fulfilling schedule. Federal law, including the Equal Access Act, requires that school districts allowing school clubs on campuses treat those clubs equally without regard to the particular viewpoint of the club.

Then they won't mind "Joining Jihad" or "Death to America" or "Beast Bedding" or "Fun with Fisting" or "Meth Making Methods" clubs.

But Athena Cruz, 16-year-old sophomore, said after the vote that she plans to leave Clovis High and be home-schooled by her parents: "I don't want to be anywhere in their influence."

Good for you, Athena. Homeschooling will be better for you in the long run anyway.

I don't see whats wrong with this. In most high schools any kids can form any club as long as they have teacher approval. I don't see anything wrong with Gay-Straight alliance. Of course now I'm going to be flamed, told I'm going to hell just because I tolerate other people's sexuality and told about all the evils of public school.

I'm wondering when we will see the LAST schoolboard in Kalifornia pass this? Very soon probably.

Gay Straight Alliance Club Constitution, which advocates nonviolence, anti-discrimination and anti-harassment, and which does not provide for teaching of issues related to sex or sex education, is in compliance with the provisions of law requiring the District’s approval.

Okay, sure.

"It's a normal thing to be afraid of someone who is different than we are. The more that you get to know people ..., the more comfortable you'll be around them,"

Tell a lie often enough, and it will become truth.
Parents need to get their children out of there now. They need to take a stand. If they don't stand up to this, their children may be damned.

Anal fetish has no place in a school full of young children. Why not teach animal sex, masocistic sex, sex with students in lower grades? It's all the same.

Not approving the club could lead to unwinnable lawsuits against the district, Behrens said.

They should have the courage to fight it anyway! Just because things look unwinnable doesn't mean you should give in to evil. With God, all things are possible!

Is Pete Mehas still Superintendant? I went to high school with him, when high schools were fun and the clubs concerned themselves about politics, sports, journalism, science, photography, etc.

Sign of the times: The student council for the high-school in our Phoenix neighborhood set up a Valentine's Day matchmaking service. Each student supplies a few facts about his/her/itself, and checks one of four boxes: Gay, Straight, Don't Reveal, or No Preference. The student council then finds the "best" match for each person, and posts Valentines with paired names on them on the gymnasium wall.

Our kids are homeschooled, so they missed out on this "fun" event.

"It's a normal thing to be afraid of someone who is different than we are. The more that you get to know people ..., the more comfortable you'll be around them," parent Tom Laury said to the board. "This is what the purpose of this club is. It's about learning to get along with fellow human beings."

No, Tom. I don't think so. I think you're really saying this:

From The Overhauling of Straight America: "We do not need and cannot expect a full “appreciation” or “understanding” of homosexuality from the average American. You can forget about trying to persuade the masses that homosexuality is a good thing. But if only you can get them to think that it is just another thing, with a shrug of their shoulders, then your battle for legal and social rights is virtually won."

Onward and upward towards that national shoulder shrug <shudder>.

I'll leave for later debate the idea that while I agree queers and faggots are human beings, I don't consider them fellow human beings.

I believe the Clovis Board is in for a real surprise! Parents are already pulling their kids out! And I'm looking into options. One which is Fresno Christian apparently already has a waiting list. Unfortunately, what the clovis board morons forgot is there are a lot of parents in this school system willing to stand by their convictions.

The parents pleaded at that meeting last night to get rid of all of the non-curricular clubs rather than ok the gay club. They didn't even discuss it! And the Clovis representing attorney kept saying you'll take the chance of losing federal money if you deny this! What a crock!

What was also amazing is that only 3 teachers from the Clovis system had the guts to stand up for the welfare of their students. And not one teacher from Clovis High school had the guts to say anything. I certainly learned a whole lot last night about Clovis Unified. In their "Rights & Responsibilities Handbook" under Board Policy No. 2101 it states, #3. High personal standards of courtesy, decency, morality, clean language, honesty and wholesome relationships with others shall be maintained." Gee, it sounds like their in violation of their own policies!

I can't get my daughter out othere fast enough. She is heart broken, embarassed and ashamed for her school.

And to set the record straight (no pun intended) the thunderous applause was not for both sides, only about 15% of the people there supported this club....and 14% of those were from out of town.

Clovis should hang their heads in shame!

Salute to the parents. Keep the fight up! Don't let the homos access to the children. Who runs the schools anyway--parents or teachers! From the looks of things, the homo community.

Most of the parents I saw on the news this morning were dead set against this club being approved, but the board, as usual ,did not listen to them. Afterall, they are only the taxpayers! I am just outraged at this decision, but certainly not surprised at yet another anything goes vote by the board!
I know some of the members on this board, and hope many freepers will email them with the addy's you so kindly provided and let them know how you feel about this decision!
