Clovis Unified board OKs students' gay-straight club

The Clovis Unified School Board voted 5-2 to approve the club, with members Richard Lake and Susan Walker dissenting.

Supporters say the club promotes tolerance and equality among students of varying sexual orientation; people against the club say it promotes homosexuality and has no place in the schools.

Don't forget Clovis Christian. A smaller version of Fresno Christian. They offer K-12. You can also take 1 or 2 classes of your choice to supplement your home school program.

What was also amazing is that only 3 teachers from the Clovis system had the guts to stand up for the welfare of their students. And not one teacher from Clovis High school had the guts to say anything.

Shelly, thank you for your detailed testimonial.  We are also under the same situation.  We have two kids in the "CUSD system".  Two years ago, the CUSD Board would not allow kids to hold small signs with inspirational messages in the Class Photo at the end of the year.  Kids could hold signs that said, and I quote, "Trish is Hot" "I love Beth's lips" but students who had small signs which said, "Thank you Jesus", "John 3:16", "Part of the Family of God" had their signs confiscated.

We contacted the Rutherford Institute, and they jumped right on the project.  Fired off letters, and within 2 weeks, the school had to reschedule the Class Photo, and retake it.  The solution, you guessed it.  All signs were forbidden from the picture.

This School Board has been on a slippery slope for years.....I agree with you, it is sad, and our school has been high jacked by these liberal buffoons, but again, the Silent Majority continues to live up to their moniker.........ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.....

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. You make very good points. I just find it unfair to indict an entire school district, as some have, for expressing a very real fear of litigation. Knee-jerks (someone called me a 'fag lover'....huh?) should channel their outrage properly. There is an important election coming up in California. Again, I do appreciate mature discussion. Thanks.

Being from fresno I also know that most people in Clovis live in a far different world then people in Fresno. Clovis is less tolerent and more eliteist. Seriously though... who can argue this? Look at it this way.. most homophobes are that way because they have sexual feelings of there own they don't know how to deal with(i'm not saying this makes them gay but that they can't tolerate images of it in their mind or tv because they presume it will make them gay or makes them feel gay for watching/seeing it). Regardless I think most people on here will agree and rightfully so that homosexuality is not mimiced or taught.. it just is. Just because you know gay people does not make you gay. One more side note.. being gay didn't come from liberals allowing it on tv or gay pride parades.. it's been around for centries because and I can't explain it myself.. it just is... so deal with it.

I plan on calling or e-mailing everyone on this board and I will also encourage "no" votes on any future school bond measures as long as I live in Clovis.

I also believe that discrimination against Jewish people (that is, discrimination specifically based upon Judaism) is abhorrent and I do not find Judaism to be morally objectionable. Does this make me Jewish?

No....Pete is the sup of Fresno County Schools, has been for umpteen years now...I am from the class of 74...and I hate this happening at my alma mater..........but I also took my two daughters out of Clovis school district years ago...for various reasons...number one was cause they allowed a religious group to have "volunteers" on campus everyday.....they wore white shirts and had name tags.....

Pete Mehas is not the Sup of Clovis USD, he has never been...He was the assistant sup under Doc Buchanan.... He is the sup of Fresno county school district...Pete was the principal of Clovis High during the early 70's..........Pete is a good man....

IF enough parents pull their kids it will impact the district. Who worships the mighty dollar pretty hard.

I heard on Channel 30 news tonight where they said parents threatened to pull their kids out of Clovis High if this passed "but no one did". This was a lie, the parents of my daughters best friend called Clovis High first thing this morning and told them she would not be back. They did take her out! And I know of several families looking into private schools and home schooling (me included)! Of course, you won't hear about this from the biased media. I also think it's interesting that none of our local media talked the board meeting up, but once it passed......wow this is big news!

I think every parent who takes their kid out of the Clovis School system should call "30" just to keep them informed. Because you can bet Clovis Unified won't be telling them the truth. Very sad!

Most of the parents I saw on the news this morning were dead set against this club being approved, but the board, as usual ,did not listen to them. Afterall, they are only the taxpayers! I am just outraged at this decision, but certainly not surprised at yet another anything goes vote by the board!
I know some of the members on this board, and hope many freepers will email them with the addy's you so kindly provided and let them know how you feel about this decision!
