The Pilgrims and the Mayflower also are excluded, as well as the word "war," which has been replaced with "conflict" in lessons about the early settlers, colonization and expansion.
Also gone are most references to the inhumane treatment many American soldiers endured in wars overseas during the 20th century. However, the standards specifically note that students should identify slavery, the Holocaust and modern Iraq as examples "i n which people have behaved in cruel and inhumane ways."

If you were to read New Jersey's latest History Core Curriculum Standards, you won't find the words "Religious Freedom", "Puritans", "Pilgrims", "Mayflower".
The reason is simple - the "politically correct" New Jersey History standards delete any references to "dead white men". Thus, "Washington", "Jefferson" or "Franklin" are also absent.
As a consequence, those in the NJ Dept of Education have decreed that New Jersey public school students needn't learn about the real reasons for our nation's founding. Any reference to deity is also absent.
A note to your state Assemblymen and Senator may be effective in restoring such concepts.
The Thomas B. Fordham Foundation rated our previous History Standards as the worst in the U.S, and the American Federation of Teachers gave them an "F". The new ones are hardly an improvement.
You must remember we had a 10 year Republicrat Ligislature, 8 of which with a Republicrat Governor, Christine Todd Whitless and for the last year, Acting Governor Donald "Donnie D" DiFrancesco.
I am not surprised by this PC curriculum our republicrat legislature and executive branch are no different than the DemocRATS; however, I am still outraged that the Dept. of Ed. would even think of doing this sort of thing under a republican Commissioner of Education, Vito Gugliardi.
What are we to do in NJ? The Republicans seem worse than the DemocRATS.
Is it time to form a Conservative or Constitutional Party?
Time will tell, I don't think I will be voting for republicans anymore.

No wonder people homeschool.

Welcome to the bitter truth of reality. You're not going to gain comfort from seeing things as they are, but at least you'll have the satisfaction of knowing your blinders are finally off. Good luck to you.

Even though we live in N.J. I'm glad my daughter did not attend school there.
To digress for a moment, I just sent an e-mail to my illustrious Congressman, Robert Menendez.(13th) Out of all the comments to the President's State of the Union Address, his was the only one CNN listed which was negative- - -some representative--- he spends all of his time with his palm outstretched trying to grab dollars for his social programs. Makes my blood boil.

I wonder how they are going to re-write the Battle of Trenton? Or the US Statehood quarter of GW and the boys crossing the Delaware with the motto "Crossroads of the Revolution?"
Maybe they'll just ignore that part of US History.... And I live here in NJ

I don't expect this to be a very long thread due to the questions you asked. Good questions, but lots ducking when it comes to comments on the scared cow of the Republican Party.

Replaced 'war' with 'conflict'? Are they going to teach about World Conflict I or II? The Civil Conflict? The U.S. Conflict Department? Indian Conflicters? Conflict crimes? Will the student talk about their favorite "Star Conflicts" characters?

It's time for a conservative publisher to create a series of children's books about the true history of this country. REgnery Publishing once had a children's division, Reilly & Lee, but it's long defunct. (They published original Wizard of Oz books among other titles.) Reilly & Lee might be cranked up again and pointed in history direction.

It might be a good question to ask if the government schools should be abolished. Then ask if the Republicans or conservatives are in favor of it.

Why not just call for a consevative version of history?

LBJ's Conflict on Poverty? The Conflict on Drugs? The Conflict On Teerorism?
Just when I thought thought I was all finished ranting.

All you need to do is look at the history books that were in use when the American public schools were actually functional. While you're at it, look over the Civics books, the Math Books, the Science Books, the Literature Books, and the Grammar Books.

The Republican legislators in NJ can not bend over far enough to please the NJEA. So long, Donnie D, and please let the door hit you on the way out.

My guess is that you would not find a single American flag in any classroom in the citie of New Jersey.
