Officials support resolution calling for end of 'Redskins' era

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Regional elected officials threw their backing behind a resolution urging Washington's NFL team to abandon the name ``Redskins'' as racist and ``morally unacceptable.''

The team said it has no plans to change the name. Carol Schwartz, a member of the District of Columbia Council, urged team owner Dan Snyder to follow the lead of Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollen, who in 1997 abandoned the name ``Bullets'' for his NBA franchise, in part because of local gun-related violence.
Redskins senior vice president Karl Swanson expressed frustration that the officials failed to consult Snyder or his staff before voting on the resolution.
Swanson referred to a letter he sent to Schwartz following a similar vote by the D.C. Council in November, in which he said the name ``Redskins'' symbolizes ``courage, dignity and leadership.''
``We do not sanction fanciful mascots or caricature-type logos.''
The resolutions outlined a history of the word, which they said was used to dehumanize Native Americans by bounty hunters who collected scalps for payment, as though they were animal hides.
The NFL franchise became the Redskins in 1933 when the team moved to Boston's Fenway Park. The team has been based in Washington since 1937. link

New name: The D.C.P.C's

The biggest turnaround in Washington sports this year are the Wizards followed by the Terrapins. (Of course, it helps when you've got a guy named Jordan on the team). In contrast, the Redskins are simply a mediocre team with a mediocre owner.

Maybe the best way to deal with this is to publish a
dysron list of people who are too stupid to understand that in making a particular tribe or race the symbol of your endeavor, the emblem of your call to battle, you honor them, not demean them.
Let us hope that no one treats this resolution with respect--at least no more than it deserves, which is the total contempt of all reasoning men.

I suggest the Washington Native Americans, with Natcans for use in sports headlines.

You mean you don't like to see the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul in a terrible '70s style fuzzy coat and talking on the phone or some other weird device? THAT's Thread-ter-tainment to my way of thinkin'...

"Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollen, who in 1997 abandoned the name ``Bullets'' for his NBA franchise, in part because of local gun-related violence. " All I hope for is that when northern Virginia gets a Major League Baseball team (read, the Expos), they name them the Virginia Bullets (in honor of the state's renowned 'Project Exile' and the home of the NRA).

I suggest the Washington Native AmericansNo good. Some might find the word "Americans" offensive.
AND northern VA has a town called Winchester!
To: CroftonFreeper
"...to dehumanize Native Americans...."I'm native American, having been born here. The term would more correctly seem, "American aborigine".

The similarities are really pretty scary when you think about it...other than that fluke at the Little Big Horn, the Washington Redskins and the other kind seem to have very comparable win/loss records.

Carol Schwartz, a member of the District of Columbia Council, urged team owner Dan Snyder to follow the lead of Washington Wizards if they do cave into this PC bull honk, they should change their name to
The Washington Wieners
... as it will then accurately describe them.
To: CroftonFreeper
If I was Daniel Snyder, I'd change the team's name to the Washington Shove It Up Your Ass Carol Schwartz.

...if carol schwartz and her merry band of turds REALLY
cared about native americans, where were they when
the harlem globetrotter and bruce babbit were frittering
