Until his family is notified there will be ALOT of military families scared today...

Your sadly right. The fear factor is immense right now. For one unfortunate family their worst dream will happen.

It is heartbreaking.

I did.. it wasnt it got deleted solely based on the title apparently... I guess someone typing in secondhand comments they see on a Fox News report means that posting an AP article from the wire with more information gets deleted...

May he rest in peace. I've got to hand it to Bush for managing this campaign the way he has. We bombed and allowed the Afghan forces to do the major ground work. We will see casualites, but they will be kept at a bare minimum. The down side is that we won't eradicate as many of the Taliban or Al-Qaida as we need to. They've faded into the woodwork.

In your earlier post you said Mike Spann was the first to be killed. I clarified that Spann was CIA and the current fatality was military. No need to be rude with your DOH! retort.

US Serviceman Killed in Gun Battle

The Associated Press

Friday, January 4, 2002; 1:15 PM WASHINGTON –– A U.S. military member was killed by hostile fire in eastern Afghanistan Friday, a senior U.S. official said.

The military member, whose service branch was not immediately known, was the first member of the American military killed in action in Afghanistan since the U.S. campaign began Oct. 7. A CIA operative was killed in a prison uprising in November.

The U.S. fighter was killed in a gun battle in the vicinity of Khost, near the Pakistan border, the official said. The official discussed the matter on condition of anonymity.

An undetermined number of other U.S. troops were injured in the battle, the official said.

Other details were not immediately available.

Maj. Brad Lowell, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, said he could not comment.

On Nov. 25, CIA operative Johnny "Mike" Spann was killed during a prison uprising in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif.

The only other U.S. military members killed inside Afghanistan were three U.S. special operations troops mistakenly hit by a U.S. airstrike near Kandahar on Dec. 5.

Do I have to cite a source in the title of my posts to keep it from getting deleted? I posted an article from AP with info that wasnt in this one with a similar title and it got deleted less than 5 mins later... seems a little overzealous to me...
Hey, I'm sorry your post was deleted. When I posted this, I did a quick check on Breaking first. I don't know why unless non-sourced report as you state. . .again, sorry.

Hi homeshcool mama;

Thanks for the bump friend, even though it is such a sad one.

You know, it never ceases to amaze me that there are people who think we appear weak when we are saddened at the loss of life. They mistake it for weakness. They mistake our President as weak because he can shed a tear for life lost. They are ignorant of what we and our President are made of. It is(and will always be) a deadly mistake to think of us as weak. History seems to teach some people NOTHING!

One such poster posted on this thread. I'm with the original poster of this thread. I don't give a dang what people think either. That is our "difference".. we value all life. (At least those of us who are truly cognitive do!!) We can show our sorrow,... then show our resolve. It is a strong resolve,.. one that our hearts are 100 percent behind! So much so.. that one of our soldiers gave his life today.

God Bless him and his.... God Bless our Soldiers who are constantly on the front lines for all of us!!!

I personally don't give a DA** what THEY think.

"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not your enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat." -Sun Tzu

Knowing what the enemy thinks and feels is essential to winning a war. "I don't give a damn" bravado does not. I don't mean to sound like I'm picking on you, but you need to understand that our behavior helps to determine how the enemy will act. National mourning over a single soldier makes us look like a bunch of pantywaists. While we shouldn't seek death for our soldiers, deaths happen in war. Those who put all of life on hold for a single man cannot win a war, or so it looks to their enemies. This one death cannot consume our national attention. We will lose this war if we cannot cope with combat deaths.

He won't tell the name of the soldier that was killed, pending notification of next of kin. Understandable. . .
Proceeding to mission continuation, etc. . . .
