JERUSALEM (January 4) Combined navy and air force units on Thursday night captured a freighter in the Red Sea carrying some 50 tons of offensive weapons bound for the Palestinian Authority, Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Shaul Mofaz announced an hour ago.
The ship, the Karin A, a 4,000 ton freighter of unspecified registry, was boarded by naval commandos without firing a shot some 500 nautical miles from Israel in an operation code-named Noahs Ark. The captured vessel is now en route to Eilat, Mofaz told reporters in Tel Aviv.
Among the many weapons on board, Mofaz listed long-range Katyusha rockets, LAW anti-tank missiles, Sagger anti-tank missiles, long-range mortars, mines, and much explosives.
The capture of the weapons undoubtedly prevented heavy loss of life in Israel, Mofaz said, adding that the shipment was in clear violation of agreements with the PA and demonstrates that PA Chairman Yasser Arafat is not committed to fight terrorism.
The weapons were packed in special floating waterproof containers designed to be dropped into the sea and picked up by smaller craft, Mofaz noted.
OC Navy Admiral Yedidya Yaari told the press that the distant operation in international Red Sea waters, which included both navy vessels and air force helicopters, "stretched the envelope of Israels deterrent capability a few inches forward."

I heard about this on the news on the way to work. According to the newsreader, although the ship was registered to the PA, they denied any knowledge or responsibility. How can the Israelis be expected to negotiate in good faith with such a pack of liars?

This is one the major problems with a Palestinian State. When the Pallies control their borders they will be a lot more free to smuggle in weaponry and even weapons of mass destruction.......poison gas, radiocative materials and such

But did the IDF target the crew of the ship on account of their ethnicity? Inquiring race-baiting dingbats want to know.

A "palestinian state" for the murdering bastard Egyptians, Jordanians, Syrians and Lebanese who've so recently [1967] invented the myth?
Let them rename the "4000-years-old hashemite kingdom" of Jordan that the bloody British, creators of so much of the world's perenial problems, invented such a few short decades ago!
And get them to Hell out of God's Mountains!
Out of Israel!

Iranians are not Arabs, but Persians. Although non-Arab, they are Muslims.

This is a daring and impressive operation, to save hundreds or thousands of lives of the Israelis who would be targets of these weapons, and to do so on the open seas withoout any loss of life. That's impressive. Since Arafat bought the weapons and supplied some of the crew, and since these are weapons that he has agreed in writing not to possess, and since he made the purchase while he is allegedly "seeking a just peace...." Well, let's just say that Arafat is every bit as honest, but just a tad more murderous, than Billyjeff Clinton.
There is a third advantage to this haul. For decades now Arafat has been condemning the United States, because its weapons (ones it sold Israel) have been used to "murder Palestinians." That leaves out the fact that Israel is acting against the perpetrators of multiple, WTC-sized attackes on its civilians, in proportion to its total population.
Follow up on Arafat's "logic." I hope that Israel now uses these seized weapons in in its future actions against the Palestinian terrorists. Who will Arafat now blame for the weapons? Himself? Or Iran?
To Israel, I say shalom. To Arafat I say, so long.

The UN General Assembly and the NY Times immediately condemned the Israeli action and demanded an investigation into "acts of piracy in international waters"
