XP and a New Puter ... It's a Whole New World ...WOW
vanity | 01-01-02 | mercy

Posted on 01/01/2002 4:11:47 PM PST by mercy

It sorta just snuck up on me. My old nanao monitor started winking at me, the ole gal felt like dropping by Comp USA and the next thing I know I'm rolling out the door with a new VAIO tower, a Samsung syncMaster flat screen LCD and a Canon bubble jet (there goes my buy American bluster).

I wasn't going to do it. Really. The thought of venturing past my garden path was too scary. The ole Dell XPS 200 and windows 95 was so .... well, familliar. I was afraid taking the leap would be just too painful. Boy was I wrong. Mama was in the mood to spend money and ya just can't go against that flow. Might not happen again in a coon's age.

Been hearing not so good things about Dell and the prices have been plunging so that one has to wonder about what they're putting in those things these days. Besides I wanted the security of just being able to walk the box into the service dept. if I had a prob and actually getting the thing back in days rather than weeks. The Sony seemed like a solid machine and not a conglomeration of god knows whose parts. The flat screen just knocked my eyes out. XP made my old OS look like a cheep 40's cartoon. So I jumped.

Despite my desire to get in a dig at Bill Gates whenever possible I'm going with 'internet exploder' for now. doesn't seem so bad and I'm not really missing Netscape ... yet. (I may pinch him a bit by dropping Office and going with Corel) I haven't had any trouble with XP whatsoever. I've deleted some junk they had in the box and I've added several programs. I'm all over the net and not a glitch. ON THE FIRST DAY. I can't believe I waited so long. I love the whole package. AND for some unknowable (for me) reason my internet connection is chunking along at twice the speed of before though my dialup connection is the same lame ole 28k and I already had a new top line modem in the ole box. Go figure.

So if any of y'all out there are like me and afraid of the change .... don't be. It's wonderful.

How come every time Microsoft comes out with a new system people say "I love XXXXXXXXXXX, it is so stable!"

Compared to what?

XXXXXXXXXXX-1

now I only have to dread transferring the files! Thanks so much!

________________________

Easiest way to transfer files is take the hard drive out of A and install it as slave hard drive in B. B is your new computer!

Just drag and drop what you want to keep onto your new computer. When finished remove slave hard drive and put back in A.

I wouldn't doubt it. Talk about a super secret division of the company though! If what those guys in the secret section were doing ever got out .... people might actually start looking for a competitor.

This is a very pathetic request, but I simply cannot get to "www.freerepublic.com". I am forced to use "http://209.157.64.200", which makes it extremely difficult to post.

I've cleared my cookies (even manually), restarted, yadada.., but no dice. Any tips?

Dear Gold,

Thanks for the info. I run 95 myself so I didn't know about the built in NIST link in XP. I am greatly encouraged by the XP reports here and hope to be going that way soon. This has turned out to be one keeper of a thread.

I am using the generic www.freerepublic.com and have not had any problems.
I am guessing that over time the DNS server will finally get updated ,
but it has been a while since the 27th!

Thanks. When I ran Windows Me on my old computer I used third party atomic clock software to keep the clock synchronized. Oh well Microsoft always catches up to a good idea down the line...

It is gonna be top of the line AMD Athlon XP

What do you plan on doing with this machine? If it's graphics intensive (Multimedia or gaming) I'd skip the Athlon and go with an Intel processor.

btw...there are ways to get office XP without buying it. wink wink.

Hey, weasel, you're the reason that Microsoft added product activation. If you're going to steal its software, you're a thief. Plain and simple.

eXtra Profits (for Microsoft)

So it's wrong for Microsoft to try to earn a profit?!?

eXtra Problems (for it's users)

You know of an OS that's completely free of problems? LMFAO! Get real.

eXtra Pearls (more bells and Whisles)

BS. If you're running Win9x, the upgrade to stability is worth the cost alone.

I'm glad that Microsoft is finally putting this kernel into their consumer OS's. I think they didn't before because they wanted to keep supporting all that old DOS software.

You are correct. That was the stumbling block.

Skip MS Office and Corel. Go with Star Office from Sun. It's free, it's compatible with MS Office

Compatible? What a joke. 90% of my documents lose their formatting in StarOffice. This thang ain't ready for primetime yet, IMHO.
