[history]
December 4, 2001 -- The year 1997 was a critical turning point for high-school student John Walker. That's when he read "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," began wearing a white robe and turban, and changed his name.
The conversion of John Phillip Walker Lindh from California teenager to grimy Taliban fighter and U.S. prisoner of war can be traced to the year he spent cramming for his high-school diploma at an alternative independent school in the San Francisco Bay area.

Just going from the story:He ended up as a soldier for another country which at the time was not an enemy of the U.S.
Hm.... true...
When war with the U.S. started, he deserted the army of the enemy of the U.S.
False - Based on what I read, he trained in a terrorist camp, fought against us, was captured, and if that's not treason, nothing is...

With parents like that, the kid never had a chance. What dolts. Has anyone told them that their kid is a TRAITOR?!!! And, by definition, traitors are not nice people. Duh.

I'm glad I'm not as smart as that guy.

Both John's father, Frank Lindh, a strict Irish Catholic, and his mother, Marilyn Walker, a Buddhist, were supportive of their son's new faith. Sorry, N.Y. Post...if this guy were such a "strict Irish Catholic," he:
- Probably wouldn't have married a Buddhist
- Certainly would not have been supportive of his son (for whom he bears the responsibility of education in the Faith) embracing a heresy
Basically, the kid is a nut. He should have been in a mental hospital, instead of running around Asia.

Also, I'd like everyone to think hard where this kid got all this crap put into his head.
That's right: PUBLIC SCHOOL.
Something to think about.

...brought up their three kids to have open minds. Yeah. The cult of the Left have real open minds. A lot of original thought too.
Raise a child to believe 2+2=5 and there's no telling what road it will lead him down.

Even the relatively conservative NY Post is trying to tie in the "strict"-ness of the father's Catholicism for this kid's nuttiness.
IMO it's his mother's hippy-dippy New Age kumbaya beliefs that drove the kid into the arms of a fundamentalist cult.

Hang the traitor then cut off his left hand and send it to Dasch-hole to remind him how close he is to being accused and convicted of treason.

The parents had moved from Washington to California when their son, whom they named after John Lennon, was 10, and had brought up their three kids to have open mindsSo mere days after the death of celebrity-hippie George Harrison, we learn of this guy -- named after celebrity-hippie and kumbaya 'peace activist' John Lennon.
Whatta world.

The parents . . . had brought up their three kids to have open minds.Looks like his mind was so open his brains fell out.
And of course they will, once someone puts a bullet through his skull.

Far from having deserted, he was still carrying an AK-47 when he was recaptured in the fort. That's according to his father, who would have no reason to admit this if it was not true.

What I want to know is if the "BRILLIANT TEEN" was involved in killing
(by kicking, beating, and biting) American Hero Mike Spann?
To: B Knotts
Yes, he should have been in a mental hospital, but instead, his parents put him on a plane to another country, probably breathing a sigh of relief at the same time.

Where in the article does it say he deserted his Taliban pals? All it says is that he high-tailed it out of Kabul when the bombs started falling - something I think plenty of other terrorists did.

Appearing on The Today Show this morning, the father claimed that "his son hadn't done anything wrong" and that "his son converted to Islam because it is a peaceful religion." The general tone of Katie's interview was very respectful of the father and his feelings, though she did allow at the end that "some people" consider his son "a traitor".
Asked about his son's statements supporting the USS Cole and Sep. 11 attacks, the father said: "my son has just gone through a horrible ordeal, and it was wrong to ask him any questions. I'm sure that given time to reflect he wouldn't say those things."
Really? Didn't he join and fight with the Taliban precisely because he DID support a war on the West?

RE: your 27, you beat me to it, B. Knotts.
Fox & Friends were explaining some of how that (obviously) very liberal school works. One day a week for class, study when you want, take any tests when you feel like it.
The NEA should be proud of what they (and his parents) did to this "brilliant(ly)" stupid kid.

Quote of the Day by me
To: kattracks
1. He's not brilliant - joining the Taliban is in the definition of 'stupid'.
2. He's not a teen - that means he can be tried, convicted, and hung as an adult.
3. Anyone who wants to fight against us is free to leave the country, give up their citizenship, and be shot on sight.
4. Whoever wrote this article should be forced to spend a month with homeschooled Christian families. Maybe then he'd see some brilliant teens schooling themselves - and just maybe going off to fight on the right side!
