Can't give any first hand info, but my mother's next door neighbor just had his son and daughter in-law arrive from Metarie.
They had evacuated, but their home was destroyed and they aren't planning on going back to Louisiana. They are planning on moving north and are looking for work.
I hope your friends heeded the evacuation orders.

Davenport tends to flood but the city enjoys its riverfront. Not anything like it used to. There are seawalls on both sides of the river. It could happen again if enough water came down from upriver breaching the wall, but the local pasttime of going downtown to see the annual flood has been replaced with activities and casinos in the same area.
Now the main problems concern heavy storms where the drain sewers and creeks can't handle the runoff fast enough. They have bought up whole properties that have formerly flooded and are not allowing any building there again.
Now there is a big brouhaha about a storm sewer tax.

I guess this New Orleans flooding isn't something that has taken people by surprise. Whatever inspired you to post this in '01?

Tropical weather didn't really interest me until I was at ground zero for Hurricane Andrew in Louisiana. After that experience I started learning as much as I could. LSU has some great resources on its website.
The studies about New Orleans were intriguing and so when I saw this article a few years ago, I posted it. It wasn't a premonition or anything like that.

And yet, even with days and days of advance notice (and deaths in Florida from Katrina), able-bodied people chose to *stay* in that bowl during a Cat4/5 hurricane.
Pat O'Brien's...the drink has now outlived the bar.

I thought I was the only one who found this thread. Askel5 is OK, do a search on Romulus' latest posts for more info.

You most defitnetly haven't experienced the charm there is to the city of New Orleans, shame on you for beign so pesimistic and not seeing the beauty the city has to offer. What other American city has Spanish and French influence that can be seen in its architecture and food. New Orleans is by far one of the best American cities there is, and it would truly be sad, to see the government and people like you to just let it die.
