Tasty Weird Foods

Just to take a break from politics for a bit, I was wondering if there are others out there who also have a taste for weird exotic foods. I thought I was one of a kind in this regard until I read a newspaper article that said that there are many folks who have a hankering for exotic foods that others may find yucky.

I've eaten sea urchin eggs directly from sea urchins, cooked ox tails (or "tako" as it is called in the Phillipines), raw quail eggs, all manner of spicy European sausages such as the very garlicky Kabanosi, blood sausages in Argentina, alligator meat, and I don't even have to be drunk to eat the worm in the Mezcal bottle (although I usually am since I have to drink my way to reach it).

So what are your favorite "yucky" foods? I am always on the lookout for new exotic foods so I will be most interested in reading your comments and food suggestions.

Mame, I've eaten everything from fried chicken feet, to live lobster that moves when you stick the fork in, to rotten eggs pickled in horse urine, but I have NEVER though about eating a part of my own body. Ewwwwwwww, you win.

I know what you mean! Forget about eating it, the instructions for preparing it alone make me gag. Blech.

I never have liked the idea of uni. Something about the color and the volume that is served - it just looks like too much.

What's wrong with the color of uni? It is actually quite pretty. A variety of bright yellow-orange to reddish yellow. As to volume---There is NEVER too much of it. Fortunately the ocean floor is littered with sea urchins so there are plenty of urchin eggs down there for the taking. BTW, when I brought the sea urchins up on a beach, I cause quite a commotion when people saw me eating them right out of the urchins. However, it did prove to be something of a Babe Magnet.

The lobster hand roll, however, was spectacular!

I love hand rolls. They are really crunchy. Again I really appreciate the attention paid to TEXTURE. To me this is quite important.

Ahhhh, scrapple! That would be pig put through the grinder. Then add spices and juices and pour into a mold. When cold, dredge in flour and fry in bacon fat! That would be an accompaniment to fried taters, eggs over easy, and coffee soup, wouldn't it?

I get a kick out of people who claim to be queasy over my exotic food tastes. These are often the same folks who love Hilshire Farms Summer Sausage. To me, that summer sausage is fit only to be fed to dogs. Whenever I dare to take a bite out of it, my body reacts in total revulsion and I have to spit it out. I consider summer sausage to be nothing more than wannabee salami packed with soybean additives and chemicals.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Cajun food! Anyone else out there ever try a tasty crawfish po'boy? Ummmm....

On another note, ever eat a "thousand year egg"? It's black, rubbery, and mysterious.

I ate raw sea urchin too. All it took was to wade out in the water off Mt. Desert Island in Maine. Cracked it open and ate it. I used to gather a ton of mussles there...build a campfire ......and eat up. You can't really eat mussles raw.

My favorite vegetable! Especially those little round seeds that go "pop" in your mouth.

Now all this happened during the 1980s and hopefully today those stores in North Carolina wised up and got some Matzoh crackers....We now live in the Pacific Northwest, and are able to get our Matzoh crackers...and I agree, Matzoh Brei, slathered with melted butter and served with a generous dab of sour cream, is just about heaven....

I should have read this far before I sent that long e-mail about getting matzoh in North Carolina! LOL!

So no cornmeal in the bread but just on bottom so it doesn't stick to the board or the oven? I'm in South Florida and good Jewish rye bread is available. But is Sherman Oaks an epicenter or what? Even 25 years ago I knew the tribe was there in great numbers. LOL!

Yep - cornmeal on the bottom only.

BTW, Sherman Oaks is *not* named after Allen Sherman! But Tarzana *is* named after Tarzan.

Matzoh treats huh? When I was young my brothers and I tried to make Chocolate Matzoh. That consisted of globs of canned Betty Crocker Chocolate Icing layered between pieces of matzoh. A tasty no-bake treat! Nothing beats a huge spoon of prepared icing right out of the can. Mmmmmmmmmmm......icing.

I love raw onion on cottage cheeze with russian dressing, or on an avacado with thousand island dressing. You gotta problem with that? I love valdalia onion sandwiches on rye bread too.

If you ever get a chance, go to an East European Deli and get some Kabanosi. Dried is best. It is very garlicky.
