What gun(s) to purchase & other gun questions.

Posted on 11/05/2001 12:11:09 PM PST by Carol Roberts

My wife and I just obtained our Basic Firearm Safety Certificates. At the range we rented a Glock 9mm, S&W 38, and Sig Sauer 45. I found the recoil almost identical on each gun we tested (the wife didn't shoot the .45). About 25 years ago I shot a S&W 357 with magnum rounds and I remember the recoil was much more noticeable.

My wife is comfortable with the S&W 38 revolver and the Glock 9mm, but she only used the .38 in single action mode as she wasn't used to pulling the trigger all the way back, so the Glock 9mm will probably be best for her. She's not that strong so I'm a little concerned with her sliding the 9mm in a "situation". We'll be shooting our guns weekly for a while, but feel an urgency to make a purchase now. Comments/suggesions?

I'm interested in something bigger, perhaps Glock 10mm/357/.40/.45. According to glock the .40 caliber (Glock 23) "are so impressive that the FBI recently adopted them for issue".

From what we're told, it's not that difficult to get a concealed weapons permit where we live. So that raises the question of getting the smaller versions for concealment. Which raises accuracy, firepower, etc issues. Comments/suggesions?

BTW, when referring to Glock guns, is it best to refer to their model number or caliber?

For home protection I was also thinking of getting a 12 gauge shotgun (just gotta get close). The Winchester 1300 looks good. What's your opinion for using the 12 gauge for home protection?

My gut feel for my myself (not my wife's weapon) is the Glock 10mm and some .38 or .357 revolver for an ankle strapped backup, although I'm not too sure on brands for the revolver... Suggestions? Between the Glock 10mm, .356, .40 & .45, is the bigger the bore really the better? I guess that all depends, but what's your pick and why?

Of course there's my favorite from high school days/daze, the AR15, which I haven't really thought about since high school but always thought it would be a great weapon to help protect the neighborhood, such as in a "Red Dawn" situation.

Throwing knives are another issue... Suggestions?

Is there someplace to discuss firearm questions/issues on the net? Here?

A 105 beehive round

Damn, ain't that just like you. Shoot a beehive so you don't have anything left to carry to the morgue. Talk about a lazy individual.

I've taken my wife shooting a few times with my latest 9mm - the HS2000. She's getting very comfortable with it and shooting nice groups. She takes it to work with her at 'BillyBob's carryout/gun&tackle and hardware store' to keep under the counter. She's taken her safety a little more seriously lately since the store was held up a few weeks ago by a local druggie. She wasn't there when it happened, and the cops got him (lucky for him I didn't get him first) but the whole incident woke her up.

I thought my smaller CCW piece would work better for her, but she doesn't like the heavy DA pull, and the recoil is harder due to the light weight and straight blowback action.

As for my 'house gun' I keep my Mossy 12 in the corner beside the dresser. She's not very comfortable shooting even target loads in it, and I've been looking for ways to reduce the recoil. What's your opinion of porting the 18" barrel? Would that help? Also, I saw a recoil-reducing buttstock made by Hogue (sp?) in a catalog the other day. It looks like a standard synthetic stock, but the pad is mounted on a spring-loaded apparatus that fists inside the stock. Kinda like a shock-absorber between your shoulder and the chamber. Seems like that would help. What do you think?

I have the tools I need, but being proficient and comfortable with them is just as important.

The hoag stock "looks" good but something I haven't tried so can't comment on honestly. But I have all my working 12 gauge's ported by "VANG" ........Now that "will" reduce recoil.

Take her out to drop some of those PC Quail/Dove that some call "sporting clay's"...trap.....skeet, etc etc with an unported scattergun then hand her the vang ported shotgun and measurable difference will be noted. Maybe even to the point you don't get your mossy back either :o)

Load stack sequence is 2 x #4 buck, 2 copper solid slugs, 2 x #00 Buck , the remaining load are copper soild slugs. The round down the spout is based on intel. Doe's your local "criminal" element have a trend of wearing kevlar undies ???? If so you won't punch it with a slug but you will bust enough ribs to stop em from breathing long enough to do a failure drill on em.

Stay Safe Pocat

Glad to help, Carol. As far as pistols go, I'm a die-hard fan of the .45 ACP and the M1911 model pistols. I also shoot a .357 Rossi with magnum and .38+P ammo, and enjoy it immensely. As far as the .40 goes, I don't know much about it but I hear it has almost the same stopping power as the .45, so I'm studying it as well. Don't even think about a 9mm unless you just like the idea of having to use five rounds to accomplish what one .45 ACP round would.

Winchester 1300? Excellent choice..I have one and it's so much fun I almost feel ashamed whenever I shoot it.

As far as rifles are concerned, I personally prefer military styles or copies to the nice, beautifully checkered and balanced (and expensive as hell!) hunting types. The AR-15 is also a good choice, but is kinda pricey. I'd be just as happy with a Mini-14 by Ruger, or it's 7.62x39 counterpart, the Mini-30. Of course, if you want to go for the gusto, you can get all sorts of .30-caliber military rifles which are time and battle tested. 7.62 NATO ammo is pretty reasonable priced, too. Enjoy doing the research!

Welcome to the society of citizens, I believe that no man or woman should be truly called a citizen until they take thier personal security into thier own hands. Good for you, thank you for becoming a citizen!! :)

You have the right attitude. The more we expect government to protect us, the more we will have to give up our freedoms for security. Each man is responsible for his or her own security. Had the citizens on those four hijacked planes not been disarmed by the cowardly likes of Sarah Brady et al, about 4500 American mommies and daddies would still be alive. That's how Gun Control KILLS.

This is why the explanatory clause of the Second Amendment says...

"...being necessary to the security of a FREE state..."

If you are the Carol Roberts I'm thinking of, I saw you punching out chads in the re-re-recount in PBC FL.

Carol Roberts is just my "handle". During the count of the 2000 presidential election I realized an opportunity to poke some fun at the real Carol Roberts - that red haired witch from Palm Beach.
