Flag display causes ruckus at Holy Cross

Worcester (Mass) Telegram & Gazette Staff

WORCESTER-- Margaret Post took an American flag to work three days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to mourn the death of Todd Beamer, a close personal friend who was a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93 when the hijacked jet crashed in rural Pennsylvania.

She did not realize, she said Thursday, that by hanging the flag in a second-floor hallway of Beavens Hall at the College of the Holy Cross she would cause a commotion. Instead of allowing the flag to remain in place, Royce Singleton, chairman of the college's Sociology Department, asked Mrs. Post, a secretary in the department, to take it down.

She refused.

He took it down, folded it and placed the flag on her desk, she said.

“I was doing a very patriotic thing on a national day of mourning,” she said. Her only intention, she added, was to mourn the death of a friend and honor his memory.

Mrs. Post's husband, Robert, worked with Mr. Beamer at Oracle Corp. Mrs. Post and Lisa Beamer had accompanied their husbands on a business trip to Europe and returned home on Sept. 10.

Todd Beamer is believed to have been one of the passengers who tried to stop the hijackers. He called his wife on a cellphone minutes before the plane crashed, telling her that he and others planned to overpower the terrorists.

Mrs. Beamer was honored Sept. 20 at the Capitol during President Bush's address to the nation and received a standing ovation when she was introduced by the president.

Mr. Singleton acknowledged in an interview Thursday afternoon that he had taken the flag down, but declined to explain his reasons, saying that there was “nothing to discuss with anyone outside the college.”

“I don't want to get into why it happened,” he said. “It was a decision I very much regret having made for many reasons.”

Mrs. Post said she explained to Mr. Singleton that she was mourning a friend, but he told her that displaying the flag would make some students uncomfortable. After the incident, she received a letter from Mr. Singleton in which he expressed remorse, she said.

Mr. Singleton denied Thursday night that he said anything about students to Mrs. Post.

“There is nothing that I can say that will make anybody understand the social context in which this occurred,” he said.

There was still lingering shock, anxiety and anger that Friday, he said. Seeing the flag in the hallway upset him, he added, and “stirred certain emotions in me.” He did not elaborate on what kinds of emotions he experienced.

Two other professors in the department, whom Mrs. Post declined to identify, agreed with Mr. Singleton that the flag should be removed, she said.

The incident upset Mrs. Post and prompted her to leave the campus before lunchtime that Friday, Sept. 14. She returned to work the following Wednesday.

“I started the day in honor and left in embarrassment and tears,” the Auburn resident said. “I'm a very patriotic person. I fly an American flag outside my home every day with a light on it.”

When she returned to work, Mrs. Post met with Mr. Singleton and Stephen C. Ainlay, dean of the college. An agreement was reached allowing Mrs. Post to display a flag in her office. She now has a small flag on top of her desk.

Holy Cross spokeswoman Katherine B. McNamara called the incident a “knee-jerk reaction” on the part of Mr. Singleton and one that does not characterize the college.

“The campus is filled with American flags,” she said Thursday night. “Holy Cross stands for academic freedom.”

As news of the incident spread through Beavens Hall, Mrs. Post said, an employee in the psychology department, which is on the third floor of the building, retrieved the flag that had been taken down. The flag was then displayed in the third-floor hallway, with no objections.

An employee at Holy Cross for eight years, Mrs. Post said she still enjoys working there, although it has been stressful since the incident.

“I know the professors in the department had a different interpretation of the flag than I have,” she said, “but it's not every day a secretary stands up to professors.”

The Universities DO care when their private fund sources dry up. Trust me on this one - I'm a major gift fund raiser for a Big 10 school. If you can put together a coalition with money belts, then the department/college/school/university WILL LISTEN.

I'm giving to the "Barbara Olson Scholarship Fund" at Cardozo Law School because I know that money will support students who share Barbara's conservative values. We CAN make a difference with our financial support. If you want more specifics, then please feel free to email me.

The whole (civilized) world was in shock after September 11. but Mrs Post had deep personal pain to deal with as well. Mr Social psychologist really showed his compassion, didn't he.

The picture was taken on the first tee at Bay Tree Plantation in Myrtle Beach in mid-January. Guess where the shot landed. (230 yards down the middle of the fairway, left rough, right rough, in the trees to the left of the fairway, 50 yards in front of the tee) Answer below.

In the trees to the left of the fairway.

Why am I not surprised!?

"gangenous" was misspelled. Should be gangrenous.

As for the "cultural awareness" spread by the "Muslim Community" at Holy Cross -
they are apologists for Palestinian terrorism.
And you should read their miserable excuses for "jihad."
Why do we suffer them to remain on our campuses?
Why do Catholics put up with it?!?

This Singleton needs to go to a communist country where his kind of unAmerican thinking belongs.

What a wonderful woman Mrs. Post is. I am so proud of her.She is what America is all about.

Thank you for the ping B4Ranch.

but he told her that displaying the flag would make some students uncomfortable.

Send these students back to the shi*hole countries that they were breeded from.

Perhaps they will feel more comfortable around their allies in Afghanistan, Red China, Libya, etc....

I'm uncomfortable (pissed off is more like it) with anybody who has a problem displaying the American flag anywhere. It's time to turn up the heat in the kitchen for these haughty holier than thou academia flamers.

Here is my e-mail to the Nutty Professor:

So you think the "dirty unwashed" can never understand the "social context" in which you snatched a secretary's American flag out of the window. We understand all too well. How stupendously brave of you to abuse a woman, and a lowly secretary to boot, in such a manner.

Suppose instead of a secretary, your "lower," it had been the College President, or suppose instead of it being a woman, it had been male, maybe someone with the physique of say, Jesse Ventura? Would you have dared to snatch an American flag from someone who could fight back or had power over you?

I think not. Not only are you a vicious and cowardly bully, you are a traitorous one as well.

What this really boils down to is the Professor being intolerant of other's views and beliefs, while at the same time, claiming that the flag being displayed may cause others to be uncomfortable.

The Flag is just the next image in the continuum of symbols of Civilization that a certain groupthink wants eradicated.

Marriage (traditional style),Christian symbols in any public venue, prayer in schools, the Pledge of Allegiance----

What they really hate is Structure and Tradition. They might have to agree that rules, laws and norms have validity for the furtherance of a healthy society.

Here's my letter to Mrs. Post.

Dear Mrs. Post,

I recently read an article on you, which discussed your friendship with the Beamers and how you had hung a flag to honor Todd Beamer, which was then removed by a PHD named Singleton.

Please know that you have the support of millions of Americans who, like you, consider Todd Beamer a major hero, who sacrificed himself in order to save his fellow countrymen. The Prof should be ashamed of himself.

If he is so embarrassed to be an American, perhaps he should move somewhere else, perhaps, say Afghanistan, where his totalitarian views might be more accepted. He appears to have forgotten all about the First Amendment, when views other than his own are expressed.

Anyway, I wanted to send you my condolences on the loss of your friend, and if you are in communication with Mrs. Beamer please let her know that millions of us appreciate her husband's bravery and that we are praying for her, her daughter and her family at this difficult time.

Hang tough! We are proud of you, also, for being willing to take on the left wing nut cases that seem to infest our universities. Fly that flag with pride and defiance, and remember the General in the Battle of the Bulge - who, when the Nazis told them he had to surrender, said, "nuts" to them and proceeded to win the battle.

*psst* I'll betcha Prof. Singleton never heard of this guy!

I'm proud to be your Fellow American.

Sincerely;
TRS

These professors all live in their bunkers in lala land. They know better than all of us pissants what's right and what's wrong. I went to college in the 60's. I see nothing has changed. Maybe it's time to get alumni and legislators (state schools) to become a little more active re the political misbehavior that occurs from administrators supporting errant professors.

The internet is great ain't it. These f*****s no longer have anywhere to hide.

Our Liberal Translation Lesson for the Day

"Professor" = Communist/socialist sypathizing pacifist anti-American scum

"Patriot" = Someone who expresses their feelings about our country and it's freedoms, right or wrong, but believes our way of life is superior in this nation.

Direct and succint; I'm impressed! Well done also with your letter to Mrs. Beamer. Very thoughtful.

I totally agree with you, the so-called Phd's have invaded our universaties and spew their "religion" on unsuspecting 'lemmings'(our Youth). Parents, check the faculty staff before wasting the 20,000 it would cost you to send your youngster to a school of higher learning.

“stirred certain emotions in me.” He did not elaborate on what kinds of emotions he experienced.

Could it be the realization THAT FLIGHT 93 DID NOT FIGHT BACK IN VAIN and that the entire country is ready to rise up and follow their example? Everyone is ready to roll and the left does not know where to hide.

Instead of a small flag on her desk I think this Mrs. Post should be allowed to display the larger flag from her window.

Shame on you, Mr. Singleton.

Read the artice in your link(thanks) No problems here with what he wrote. We must remember that a war against Islam by the west in general and America in particular is just what osama and his ilk are looking for.

Here is something I found the other day. A bit off topic, but I've never let a little thing like that stop me.

An Arab Moment of Truth
Which way the Islamist fantasy?

By David Pryce-Jones
From the October 15, 2001, issue of National Review

he conflict that has now erupted has been gathering for a long time. Its roots lie deep in history. To be brief and blunt, the Muslim world has never known exactly how to respond to the West, whether to adopt its values or to reject them. A logic arises: The West is powerful; power is arrogant; we are proud people; therefore we must overpower and humble the West. False as the logic is, it locks in high emotion. It also raises for Muslims an existential question of identity: What sort of people do we think we are?
For the past half century and more, the Muslim world has been free and independent, with every opportunity to organize as it wishes. And this is the heart of the issue: The Muslim world is a political and social disaster for all to see. With the arguable exception of Turkey, it consists of a series of despotisms, each with an absolute ruler whose ultimate justification is his strength and will. A family or a clique gathers around the ruler under the protection of the state apparatus of secret police and military repression. To the powerful, the spoils; to the weak, submission. No rights, no freedom of expression, no loyal opposition, no rule of law, no redress except through violence, conspiracy, a coup, and ultimate civil war.

Whose fault is this? The huge majority of Muslims understand that they are responsible for themselves. They know what they have to put up with. Describing the daily corruption and injustices of despotism, they ask the aching question, "What can we do?" Muhammad Haikal was once the spokesman of Gamal Abdul Nasser, the ruler who set Egypt back for decades. Haikal was no friend of the West either, but he could write: "The Arab and Muslim world is completely naked. [None of us] can claim any more that he is independent. We have proved we are not modern. We have proved that we are not religious in the real sense of the word. We have proved that we cannot afford democracy." Today Ahmad Bishara, a prominent Kuwaiti, says that Arabs and Muslims "should engage in deep soul-searching" about their institutions and culture.

To write like that requires protection at the highest level, as well as personal courage. There are such men, and women too. It is a moving experience to sit in rooms and cafés in Cairo or Beirut, and even Gaza and Ramallah, and listen to their clear and rational analyses of the faults of their society. They are the equivalent of Soviet dissidents in the old days, and if there is hope for the Muslim and Arab world, it lies in their example. Like Soviet dissidents, they are only saying what almost everyone knows to be the truth. For most Muslims have answered the existential question for themselves the way the populations under Soviet rule did: They want what those in the Free World have.

Muslims by the millions already live in the West, wherever they can find refuge and opportunity. This in itself defies the doctrine of Islam, whereby Muslims are prohibited from living among unbelievers. Muslim publications abroad make it clear that integration is under way, bringing with it problems — all soluble — concerning dating of non-Muslims, rejection of arranged marriages, correct manners in a multicultural society. The news reaching home countries confirms that life in the West is good. With the news comes money for medicine and education. Jamia'at Ulema-e-Islam is one of the most extreme Islamic movements in Pakistan, and its leader — a ferocious old man with a white beard — is currently summoning the faithful onto the streets to overthrow the government of President Musharraf and launch a holy war. But two of his sons are studying in the United States. He says that they will be better able to understand their enemy. This humbug reveals the inner ambiguity common to his kind. He knows, and we know, that he is supplying them with a brighter future, as any father would.

In the first months of 1979, Ayatollah Khomeini seized power in Iran. He was a Muslim equivalent of Lenin. He gave a quite different answer to the existential question of Muslim identity. Muslim society was a failure, he concurred with secular critics like Haikal, and one cause of this was the people's abandonment of their faith. Islam had made its believers great and powerful in centuries past, and it would do so again. But there was another overriding cause of the general backsliding. Over the long term, Khomeini held, the West had had the cunning and deliberate intention of destroying Islam. Why the West would have such a wanton and malign ambition he did not explain. But he crystallized a mindset with revolutionary implications: Muslims were not responsible for their plight, it was all the fault of the West, to be rectified by war.

So mosques in Iran, and then elsewhere, began to resound with cries that America was the Great Satan, and crowds burned the Stars and Stripes. The emotional logic hardened into a series of syllogisms: Islam is righteous; America is imperialist; therefore unrighteous America is uprooting Islam. Or again: Good Muslims must kill Jews; America helps Jews; therefore America is killing good Muslims. Yet again: America is arrogant; Muslims are proud; therefore suicide bombers are giving America what she deserves.

A fantasy is loose in the world, the fantasy of an Islamic supremacy destined deservedly to triumph everywhere. Like Communism before it, this Islamic fantasy aims to impose its vision on others — and call it peace. In an unexpected form, here is another totalitarian movement with the usual murderous belief that the ends justify the means. Latching on to local or regional issues everywhere, Islamic supremacy has been developing its cause: condemning Salman Rushdie to death for supposed apostasy; holding Americans hostage in Teheran; killing Marines in Beirut; sponsoring suicide bombers; threatening pro-Western rulers in Muslim countries with assassination and civil war; preparing for the genocide of Jews in Israel. The false syllogisms of the Islamist mindset have hardened into axioms supporting one outrage after another. As in the old Soviet Union, everything political becomes a metaphor for war and apocalypse. If there is no room for Muslims, the extremists declare with passion, then there is no room for anybody else either. This failure of intellect could hardly be more complete.

Except for one thing: The Left throughout the West picks it up and fans it. Demonstrations against President Bush and his response to the suicide attacks have occurred in most major cities of Europe. In the media, even in the United States, people have jumped forward to blame the suicide attacks on America and its policies, rather than on the actual terrorist perpetrators. Here comes Susan Sontag, for example, to sneer that this attack on "the world's self-proclaimed superpower" was as a consequence of specific American alliances and actions." Barbara Foley of Rutgers University believes that America's "fascist foreign policy" over many decades is to blame for the attack. Harold Pinter, playwright of the absurd, writes to the press to say that it is President Bush who is fanning the flames of intolerance.

The Taliban exemplify the Islamist fantasy. They are tribalists of a medieval brutality. They forbid women to have an education or a job, and bury a woman suspected of adultery up to her shoulders before stoning her to death. They kill suspected homosexuals by collapsing walls onto them. They have driven millions of desperate fellow Afghans into exile, and leave the remainder to face destitution and starvation. Their honored accomplice is Osama bin Laden, who for the last ten years or so has been telling everyone who can listen that the United States is the source of all wickedness and he intends to destroy it.

The Left blamed the United States for the Cold War and the division of Europe, and for unrest in the Middle East, Africa, and elsewhere. Whatever happened, the Soviet Union was innocent and peace-loving. This same Left — in the Sontags and Pinters, these same people — follows an unbroken line in its attitude towards extremists in the Arab and Muslim world. Happy to leave millions at the mercy of Communism, they are happy to leave millions at the mercy of Islamist terror, so lining themselves up as ever on the side of oppression and lies. Their intellectual failure probably does not matter much here, where long exposure has shown that their opinions have foundations in
psychopathology rather than reality. But it plays well in extremist circles, where assorted fanatics can now say, Look, the West is wicked, their intellectuals tell us so.

In the event of liberation from the general Islamist fantasy and the suicide bombers in particular, most of the Muslim world will feel a grateful relief that can only surprise and shock the Left as much as the joy of those liberated from Communism did. Should America fail to rescue them for whatever reason, though, Muslims will know that the Islamist fantasy is coming true, and they will have to endure it for a very long time to come.
