'Don't ask me to kill ... or to die'
I am a 19-year-old college student. I joined the Oregon National Guard two months before I turned 18.
I write about the possibility of war. I am still in shock about everything that has happened. I want the people responsible to pay for their crimes.
And those are the only people who should pay.
If we go to war, it will be my generation that will have to go. America will ask us to give up our dreams and to die for our country. We will be asked to leave our loved ones, to leave our educations and to die alongside our brothers, sisters and friends.
Please don't ask us to do this. I am not afraid to defend my country, but I am afraid for my country. Enough people have died already. Please don't ask me to kill others or to die myself in the name of revenge.

Oh, of course not, Laurie. We'd have to be a bunch of big meansters to ask that of you! Give me an effing break!!??
THIS is why the U.S. Army should be MEN, and not WOMEN.
That little girl needs to grow up.
Stay well - Yorktown
naw, not even in the movies... thats what breeds this bullhonk.
Unfortunately, her definition of defending her country consists of showing up for her weekend drills, possibly in her uniform (plus lipstick), and collecting her check...
"but I am afraid for my country."
If this is a representation of our National Guard, then I fear for MY country (that I spent over 22 years in the military defending) also...sad...
" Enough people have died already.
She's right in this...and we'd prefer to keep the death toll at this number. Unfortunately, freedom ain't free babe.
" Please don't ask me to kill others or to die myself in the name of revenge. "
Ask? I don't remember my military superiors asking me about my opinions about mission objectives, and I was a CDR (O-5), not a PFC. Who says we're acting for revenge? Perhaps we're doing this for National Security!
If this is for real, I pity this "servicemember"...DEVELOP A SPINE PRIVATE!
Pacifists have their place - the Armed Service is NOT that place. A true pacifist will still serve their country in the medic corp (as Lew Ayer did in WWII), or in the Red Cross, or by caring for refugees - but when you enter the armed services willingly you take an OATH to defend this Nation and this Constitution. Obviously this woman lied when she took that oath - and as a result, her words mean NOTHING.
Take a note of her name and rank - I would suggest reporting her to her commanding officer with the caveat that she be REMOVED from her post before she causes any soldiers to die on the field of battle...
All this whiny pacifism is starting to piss me off, especially when it's coming from alleged National Guard members.
This person should be given a dishonorable discharge and we should return to the days when no employer would hire such a person.
Any person, man or woman, with this kind of shallow outlook on life shouldn't even be allowed to vote, let alone join the military.
The Red Zone is now in New York as well. These people who are clueless need to get with the program!
No problem with me. I'm not in favor of women as combat troops in the first place. Nor do I favor drafting women. This young woman can stay home if she likes. But she'd better not dare cross over into criticizing those who are willing to make the supreme sacrifice for their country, while she shelters herself behind the safety they provide.
