10,000 Dead?

Should I believe my ears? Did one of the analysts on Fox News just say that estimates of fatalities were in the range of 10,000 persons? If so, this dwarfs everything. How many died at Pearl Harbor? In Viet Nam? The Korean War? At Hiroshima or Nagasaki?
We're at war. Who are we fighting against?

accd to abcnews radio : 40,000 plus people work in the WTC. and at any given time 50,000 people or more can be in the two towers...so it is quite possible that up to 20-40 thousand people may have been murdered this morning
this is horrible... pray for all the victims..

I think we have to bomb every country that protects those terrorists--and kill as many people as have died here today!!!!!!!

There's also a subway station beneath the WTC. The PATH trains from NJ come in there. That was the height of rush hour.

Bin Laden should be dead before the sun sets!
I agree, but who has been protecting him all along. I mean he has taken credit for other bombings and we have done nothing to take him out. Then of course we have had a traitor president in charge before this one.
Could it be anyone else...what about the fanatic anti freetrade types who protest all over. They are well connected with a variety of left wing groups and are internationally organized.

I heard a fellow interviewed who worked on the 35th floor of one of the towers. If he got out in an orderly manner, it's possible most of the people on the floors below the point of impact escaped before the collapse.
Its possible the no. of dead are well below 10K.
Lets pray this is the case.

the statement to those responsible and to thew world to NEVER EVER consoider such action against the USA again. You are correct. It must be swift. It must be deadly. It must say that ANY minimally involved nation AND group will die. It must, as you aptly stated, send the statement that it is insanity and death to ever consider attacking this nation again!

When the WTC was bombed in 1993, it took about 6 hours to evacuate. The elevators are out and you have to stream tens of thousands down stairwells. My heart hopes you are right, my mind tells me the number of deaths and casualties will be very high.

20 or 30,000 at least. How could you survive the collapse? Even if you weren't crushed, you couldn't breathe.
I took two of my sons to see Manhattan just a couple of weeks ago. We walked around the Towers and went to the Commodity Exchange. It could easily have happened then.
Who would do such a thing? Even for "70 virgins"?

Ironically, the Office of Emergency Management Command Center is/was right across the street at #7 World Trade Center. I guess that is gone as well!

Based upon news reports about the twin towers occupancy, it sounded to me like the death toll could go over 100,000. I am not trying to alarm anyone, but it sounded very very bad.

I believe thus use of tactical nuclear devices is in order and would make the statement to those responsible and to thew world to NEVER EVER consoider such action against the USA again. Like you, Jeff I am overwhelmed with emotions on this dreadful day. When we know the source of this incomprehensible savagry and those who assisted in its perpetration, America must respond with fury.

At a minimum it seems unlikely anyone above the impact locations got out. Deaths in the thousands seems certain.
To: jwalsh07
The difference between '93 and now is most of the power for elevators was in the lower levels and the smoke was going up.
This time the damage was up top and the elevators are compartmentalized, the towera are essentially three buildings stacked on top of each other separted by Sky Lobbies, in this case it is conceivable that the two lower sections were usable and the smoke problem is not as bad. I hope as many as possible got out, but I wouldn't count on it!

It HAS to be more than 10,000....I would suspect that every person in that cloud of dust suffocated to death... not to mention, the elevators AUTOMATICALLY go to the bottom floor and shut down in the event of a fire.
50K people total in both buildings (minus survivors)...PLUS collateral fatalities.
My guess: 35,000- 40,000 (maybe that's a little high)...just an uneducated guess.
God help us.

And what are we looking at for number of passengers on the planes? 1000 for all three?

Initial reports peg the attacking jets as 737's with a capacity of 200 or fewer each!
