The U.S. government is warning of an "ongoing cyber threat" facing industrial refrigeration units, after reports of cyberattacks targeting freezers and fridges in supermarkets around the world, U.S. military bases, and at least one blood bank.
U.S. cybersecurity agency CISA, the FBI, and several other federal government departments warned in a joint statement on Thursday that hackers are targeting and compromising internet-connected refrigeration and cold chain monitoring systems in grocery stores and cold storage facilities. The statement said that the hacks are hitting critical infrastructure, such as the food, agriculture, transportation, and medicine-shipping industries.
"If successfully exploited, the actors could change the temperature and possibly cause physical impacts such as fire hazards, loss of inventory and changes to the service life of the system," the agencies warned.
The warning comes after several waves of cyberattacks targeting industrial refrigeration units across the United Kingdom and Europe in recent weeks. Two separate waves of attacks allowed hackers to crank up the temperature on freezers and chilling units in at least a dozen countries, spoiling defrosted food and destroying produce. Some of the affected systems included remote-controlled refrigeration units made by Danish company Danfoss, which had stopped providing security updates to its customers' freezers.
Hackers also targeted a blood bank in France, causing its refrigerated units to boost temperatures in its cold units containing donated blood supplies — but were stopped before the attack could compromise blood stores. The U.S. Department of Defense is investigating a spate of hacks targeting freezers run by the military, according to Reuters. The hacks were first reported by Signal and Silence.

If it’s remote controlled, it’s vulnerable. My gas and electricity can be turned off by nvenergy. Or a hacker.

If anyone wants on or off the Ping Me When the Internet Goes Down pinglist, kindly FReepmail me. Thanks!
These hackers need to be stood up against a wall and shot.
Be sure to tell me if you don’t get this message.
Those evil hackers using their elite skills to hit our precious smart refrigerators. uh huh.

The smart appliances ain’t so smart. Speed Queen washer and Dryer..(spent 3 months on a waiting list to buy), Frigidaire refrigerator-freezer with no energy star, no ice or water on door, no connectivity with outside control. They last 25 plus years vs. 10 years on features rich junk.(just more crap to fail) Avoid anything with circuit boards in the design. No wiring harnesses to processor controlled circuit boards. No digital displays or controls. All analog stuff with relays.
ALF and ELF are the usual suspects.
I need to be smarter than my appliances.
BLOOD BANKS ARE AT RISK
BLOOD BANKS ARE AT RISK
I assume it is the laziness of the humans involved but more than 5 or so years ago there were incidents of towns’ water supply and sewage handling remotely shut down by distant hackers assumed to be in China or other countries, then suddenly turned back on. This risked total breakdown of the huge machinery. To replace the devices would take weeks or months and transporting them across highways from distant states. Meanwhile, disaster as people went without water and sewage caused disease.
I assumed the systems would go back to individual controls (yes, with a human called out of bed to drive in to fix the problem-——not a vulnerable internet connection.)
If they did not separate them, and the gas and electricity control systems, then it’s the fault of the humans.
Unforgivable.
Why are the refrigeration units connected to the internet? Idiots.
.
Military bases don’t have any back up power?
Don’t sound right
