Schumer says Republicans favor ending Iran war immediately, cites ‘power of the purse’

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) said there will be Senate Republican support for ending the war with Iran as soon as possible and threatened that Democrats will use the “power of the purse” to starve the Defense Department of funding if necessary to bring a swift end to the conflict.

“We are going to end the war. We have some Republicans already who have joined us in ending the war, and the Founding Fathers had the power of the purse as one of the ways of deterring a president who does war without the consent of the American people,” Schumer said at a press conference at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) headquarters in Washington on Wednesday.

Four Republican senators voted with Democrats in support of a war powers resolution directing President Trump to withdraw U.S. troops from hostilities against Iran without a formal authorization for use of military force from Congress.

Republican Sens. Thom Tillis (N.C.), Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), and Rand Paul (Ky.) voted to advance the Iran war powers resolution when it last came to the Senate floor.

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) was on the fence about how to vote but ultimately voted against the measure in late September after huddling with Senate GOP leaders in the Mansfield Room off the Senate floor.

Cassidy voted in support of an Iran war powers resolution in June and then changed his vote after getting in a shouting match with Trump at a private meeting.

But even if the Senate passes a war powers resolution that has the binding force of law, Trump could still veto it and Democrats don’t have the power to override his opposition.

Democrats have more leverage over Trump’s conduct of the war by blocking funding for the Pentagon.

End what? Nothing has happened in over 3 months.

Too bad we didn’t just declare victory in June and we’d still have the current status quo.

So we end the war but everyday oil moves up as Iran and it’s proxies continue to mine or bomb ships and infrastructure.

This whole issue was never framed properly. I dont see any war. I dont see any boots on the ground. I dont see Vietnam or Afghanistan.

Too late now, but the idea that this was ever anything other than a butt-stomping is a complete re-definition of war. It was and remains a limited military action. It should have always been referred to as that by the administration.

Think Christmas 1972-Hanoi. Brought Charlie to the table. Trump doesn’t need an election victory. Problem is they’ll need occupying forces if the ayatollahs quit-they won’t surrender. The question becomes WHAT soldiers from which country? Will the son of the Shah be able to keep order? Get real.

Trump now faces a reality check with a Democrat majority congress entering in January 2027. He can’t do anything he wants as he told the press his only limits was his morals. He has to have a Democrat controlled congress to sign off on a Department of Defense budget.
Trump must find a way to end this “war” before the Democrats hamstrung the military with budget restrictions.

They will surrender on Iran, even as they double down and plunder Americans even more heavily to wage war on Russia.

He’s an idiot. Trump will veto all bills, CRs will be funded at today’s levels for the next 2 years because nothing passed legislatively will ever be signed.

The power of the purse is done for 2 years as well and Trump will move funds around.

Trump will veto any bill or will reappropriate funds from something else to the military as has been done before.

You cant stop him, so stop acting like you can liberals. You are only setting yourself up for failure.
