U.S. Pushes to Restore Russian Gas Sales to Europe Via Ukraine

Idea is intended to unlock energy ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv but it faces resistance in European capitals

The U.S. is backing a quick resumption of Russian natural-gas sales to Europe via pipelines running through Moscow’s wartime enemy—Ukraine—as part of negotiations aimed at securing an energy ceasefire ahead of the coming winter, according to U.S., European and Ukrainian officials.

The idea, broached by U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff during trips to Moscow and Kyiv in September, would involve selling Russian gas via a U.S. intermediary to circumvent European sanctions—and could create a lucrative opportunity for American investors, people who attended the discussions said.

Under current European Union legislation, all purchases of Russian natural gas must be phased out by the end of 2027. Leaders of Europe’s biggest nations have said that they have no interest in restoring their dependence on energy supplies from a country they view as their top strategic threat.

The plan was put on the back burner last month after Ukraine unilaterally stopped striking Russian refineries under pressure from President Trump. Kyiv paused strikes on Russian refineries for almost two weeks as Russia continued pounding Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and as Moscow began shipping diesel to the U.S. The U.S. shifted focus to the possibility of a more substantial peace agreement.

Kyiv, however, resumed its air campaign Friday, launching three attacks on three major Russian refineries in the past three days. This has brought new urgency to the pursuit of a more comprehensive energy ceasefire ahead of three-way peace negotiations that are planned between the U.S., Russia and Ukraine for mid-November in Abu Dhabi. Russia so far has rebuffed American attempts to strike such a deal.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that an immediate resumption of Russian gas exports to Europe was...

Why are we trying to restore funding to War Criminal Putin’s military invasion of Ukraine? This is absurd. Russia is the aggressor and needs to be sanctioned and isolated from the international community until it removes its forces from all of Ukraine, to include Crimea.

Really? You're going to side with the international pariah whose allies are Red China, North Korea and Iran?

The Ukraine won’t allow that to happen, they’ll blow up the pipeline if necessary.

Win win win for multiple sides.

1) Europe desperately needs the gas. They get to cave to Russia in a way that they can blame Trump for, but get gas they need.

2) Does Russia sell diesel and uranium to the U.S.? If so, the U.S. wins (as best we can after Hillary sold off Uranium One for donations to the "foundation" making our purchases of Canadian uranium wind up enriching Russia, and the left has halted building refineries here).

3) Russia makes money off of it. A win for Russia.

4) Zelensky wins by this might being the final end of the war that Ukraine can't win anyway. Not saying it's morally right. Just saying it is what it is and might as well stop the bleeding.

“Kyiv paused strikes on Russian refineries for almost two weeks”

*******

“Smoke rises above St Petersburg on October 18, 2026, following a Ukrainian air attack on the oil terminal in the Russian city”

The first statement is as far as I can tell true, but incomplete.

It would be better if nearly every Euro Europe pays for gas wound up in an American pocket.

Sometimes easy money isn’t the best money.

Big investments have been made in LNG tankers to ship American gas to Europe. They should be allowed to pay off.

Well, you are correct, but that is not the goal this idea is trying to solve, which is to find an end to the war.

I'm not a war groupie and Putin is an evil monster who invaded Ukraine and is destroying Russia in the process. When your allies are Red China, North Korea and Iran it's not a good thing. Grow up and understand who the real evil side is.
