Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has signed an ordinance prohibiting new oil and gas drilling throughout the city and establishing a 20-year timetable to phase out existing wells.
Under the new ordinance, current drilling sites are designated as "nonconforming uses" and must cease operations within two decades, unless an earlier deadline applies. The ordinance restricts the expansion and redevelopment of existing operations while establishing limited exceptions for work strictly necessary to address public health, safety or environmental threats.
Bass, who is running for reelection on Tuesday against Los Angeles City Council member and fellow Democrat Nithya Raman, framed the legislation as a long-overdue victory for environmental justice in frontline neighborhoods that have historically borne the brunt of urban drilling.
The Center Square reached out to Bass and her office, but did not hear back by publication time.
"For too long, communities throughout Los Angeles have lived with the impacts of oil and gas drilling in their neighborhoods, leading to significant health conditions," Bass said in a press release on Thursday, the day she signed the ban. "Signing this ordinance is another important step toward phasing out oil and gas drilling in Los Angeles once and for all."
The city previously passed a similar ban in December 2022, but the measure was rescinded following legal challenges from oil companies. Warren Resources, E&B Natural Resources, and Hillcrest Beverly Oil Corp sued the city of Los Angeles. A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge struck down the ban in 2024.

Enjoy the suck mentality. Rules? We don’t need no stinkn rules.
Dumbasses.
They should takeaway all the mayor’s vehicles and give her a 3 wheeled peddle bike ,LOL
Mostly stripper wells. Virtue signaling.
Meanwhile down in Oklahoma City they have a pumping oil well on the Capital Grounds.
>>Mostly stripper wells. Virtue signaling.
Plugging and abandoning those wells will have a real cost, which L.A. is now on the hook for, as the ban amounts to a taking.
Oil was there first.
LA is the nonconforming use.
Is she gonna ban the La Brea tar pits or is that not in her jurisdiction?
Karen dumBass
I’ve worked as a roughneck on wells in Huntington Beach, Ventura, Bakersfield and all over Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming. The LA Basin still is a rich oil province. Banning a mineral owner from extracting his property from the ground is unconstitutional for good reason.
And most people in California wonder why they pay over $6 a gallon for gasoline when the rest of the country has it for $3-$4 a gallon.
Let’s here it for horizontal drilling!
I often wonder just how far present drilling technology can drill horizontally. Can they reach from afar and use the oil Lost Angeless refuses to use?
Believe or not, CA has huge oil and natural gas deposits.
Instead to use them, especially now, they choose to shut them down!
And then they complain that the gas prices are to high!
Mr. and Mrs. America, do not vote for Democrats because gas is too high!!!
It will be a lot higher when they take over!
Yep. Around here it is about $100,000 per well if it is straightforward.
The longest laterals that are fraced are about 4 miles. Most about half that.
Drove past dozens of those as a kid living off the Ventura coast.
If the big oil companies were really patriotic they’d stop selling gasoline in LA over this.
From the party that is campaigning that gas prices are too high.
