The US is poised to approve the sale of Patriot missiles to Ukraine despite Volodymyr Zelensky resuming strikes against Russian oil refineries.
On Friday, the US state department signed off on a transfer of up to 500 Pac-3 interceptor missiles to Kyiv, which will be funded by Ukrainian allies.
Mr Zelensky has warned that Ukraine's dwindling supply of defensive weaponry means it will struggle to defend itself as Vladimir Putin prepares to hammer its power grid over the winter.
However, the missiles could take years to arrive if, as expected, they have to be manufactured rather than drawn from the US's stockpiles, which have been severely strained by the Iran war.
On Friday afternoon, the state department notified Congress it had approved a sale of as many as 500 Patriot surface-to-air missiles. The $2.1bn cost would be borne by Canada, Germany and Norway.
"This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political and economic stability in Europe," it continued.
It did not clarify a timescale for the transfer, but Katherine Thompson, a former Pentagon official and senior fellow at the Cato Institute, said it "shouldn't be expected soon".
"As far as the notification indicates, this is a foreign military sale to Ukraine of new equipment through the standard process rather than a drawdown from US stockpiles that we've seen used for Ukraine under other authorities and processes," she said.
"Because this is a new purchase, delivery timelines for new PAC-3s are estimated to be out until at least 2029 or longer."

Actually, selling them to Russia would help Russia. No one is stopping the Canadians or the Europeans, or any other country from selling THEIR OWN air defense missiles to Ukraine.
Does the US HAVE 500 Patriot missiles in their stockpiles? Are the authorities just going to pull them out of their rectal orifices?
The manufacture of such seems to be at something of a bottleneck at the moment.
This probably will enable Ukraine to make borrow/payback deals with other countries. Ukraine would get missiles from other countries now and repay them with production on their due ins later.
Did you ever stop to think that the US might need those weapons.

There are tons of patriots the EU / Ukraine has ordered and already PAID for. Thus, all this has already been agreed upon long time ago by America.
