Johnson says there will be ‘peaceful transfer of power’ on Jan 3 (semi barf alert)

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Tuesday that there will be a “peaceful transfer of power” when new House members are set to join the lower chamber next year.

“Of course, we’ll have a peaceful transfer of power, but it will not be transferring because we are going to keep the majority, and I’m going to be the Speaker of the House, and I will keep steady hands at the wheel, OK?” Johnson said, responding to MS NOW reporter Mychael Schnell in a clip she posted to the social platform X on Tuesday.

“Look, you know my background. I’m a constitutional attorney. We’re going to follow the Constitution. The Constitution says when a state certifies the election of members of Congress, then they are administered the oath. That’s what I’ll be doing on Jan. 3 to everybody who’s there,” the Speaker added.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

If the Rats manage to steal this election, the talk should not be of transferring power, the talk should be of fight, fight, fight!

This encapsulates the Republican approach.

The Democrats, on the other hand, plan to have riots in many cities, will goad Trump into over-reacting, will try to impeach Trump over his over-reaction, and will attempt to “transfer power” that way. Because who cares what voters think?

This appeared on YouTube as a trending ‘short.’

It was a stupid question designed to create a stupid story and stupid headlines.

The Constitution says when a state certifies the election of members of Congress, then they are administered the oath.

~~~
Sounds to me like an invitation for California to forgo the actual election all together and simply hold a symbolic certification for all democrat candidates every November. Ya know, since all that matters is state certification.
What would you expect him to say? What should any party leader say?
“No, we don’t care what the voters say…we ain’t leaving?”
That’s some bar stool thinking, right there.
As opposed to “peaceful transfer to military power”.
Best not to answer these Y/N type questions from a dishonest press.
He should’ve simply said “I think the democrats will start burning cities down again when they lose” and walk away.
I think we'll take it all....cuz who are the Republicans going to vote for?? Dems?? Nothing much has changed since Trump was elected...again...
against all odds....Just like he was elected in 2016 when Hillary's chances were 95%.
Yes. Yours is the post of the day. That’s what Johnson should have said. There is no way a Republican Speaker would show that kind of fire. He also should have shoved the BS the Alaska rats pulled into the reporters face
Johnson worded his answer horribly—an unforced error.
All he needed to say is we will follow the House rules and the Constitution.
Full stop.
If the reporter tried to pursue it tell the reporter to do their homework and read the relevant documents.
If they ask again just say “It is not my job to do your job for you. Go get the documents and read them.”
He knows it is a long shot that he will keep the gavel but yes, he should have answered differently.
Meh, his answer was fine.
*Technically* - Johnson only has a role if he’s elected Speaker following the general election.
The current Speaker - duly elected (by members of Congress) for the 119th Congress (our current Congress) has no role.
If the GOP retains the House - and assuming Johnson is re-elected as Speaker? GREAT! It’s his role.
But the rules and the constitution don’t change, even as times have changed, “two-party” system has evolved, etc.
Following the election and state certification of Representatives? The whole of the House will vote to elect a Speaker. THAT speaker will swear in the new members.
The constitution IS the constitution. It’s my only God on earth.
Republicans always cave. I think they like being in the minority in Congress. No decisions to be made. Get that paycheck, kickbacks, and PAC $$$ and move on. Our congresscritter goes to our church. Everyone there loves him. I think he is a worthless twit.
He should say “violence comes from democrats so as long as your foot soldiers don’t riot everything will be peaceful.”
