US intelligence purportedly believes country may not survive the economic, political and social tensions dividing its society
The green light had been given; the mission was ready to go.
At an Israeli base deep inside Gaza, the soldiers of the Givati Infantry Brigade’s Rotem Battalion were preparing to embark on a combat patrol.
Yet upon opening the door of their Namer armoured personnel carrier, they refused to enter.
Despite the increasingly frustrated entreaties of their commander, the operation was ultimately scrapped.
Why? Because, according to multiple reports on the August incident, there was a female paramedic inside the armoured vehicle, and for the troops involved, who came from Israel’s Ultra-Orthodox community, this was a far bigger problem than the risk of being mortally wounded by Hamas.
Sixteen were subsequently sentenced to military detention, an outcome that provoked deep resentment in the highly religious federation of sects also known as the Haredim.
After all, it has been pointed out, these young men were at least willing to fight for their country – albeit on the condition that the military made accommodations for their strict theological rules.
By contrast, tens of thousands of other Haredi refuse outright, citing a higher duty to a life of intensive prayer and scripture study.

As the country approaches what has been billed as a crossroads election, this is one of several critical fault lines in Israeli society which some fear have the potential to tear it apart.
The prospect of an inconclusive result on Tuesday, Benjamin Netanyahu trying to hang on as prime minister, or indeed a replacement government led by Gadi Eisenkot that attempts to crack down on West Bank settler violence, could each act as the match to the tinderbox.

This is why “diversity” is destructive BS, even if they are nominally all jews.
In this case the divisions are enough that even their military becomes dysfunctional.
This is the Telegraph’s version of pornography. ‘Israel on the brink of collapse’. Yeah - ain’t gonna happen, though they certainly wish it would.
It’s the Telegraph, I call BS,
The Orthodox half of the population is living off the backs and protection of the non-Orthodox Jews, but contributes nothing more than hoards of new Talmud students.

The only meaningful “diversity” in Israel is between Orthodox and non-Orthodox Jews. Nobody else counts in a titular “Jewish State.”
They could use some more diversity.
It would be easy enough to verify. And voila.

You can find more if you look.
If not for the United States, Israel would have long since disappeared into the desert. You’d think that would make Bibi less duplicitous.
We want to fight but not if we have to fight alongside the People’s Front of Judea! Because we are the Judean People’s Front! Splitters!
When the rabid dogs are at the gate, internal squabbling is suicidal.
You have a big mouth with nothing significant attached to run it. You think the United States is responsible for Israel's survival? Try the Holy One, Blessed Be He. He's the One running the show, not the United States, not any country in the world. You slander Israel and you slander Bibi. Easy to throw stones from glass houses.

Approx. 21% of the population of Israel is Arab (incl. Muslim, Christian, Druze, and Circassian). Roughly 11% of the current (25th) Knesset is non-Jewish.
That enough diversity for yuh?
Regards,

I was cranking up my response to Eeyore until reading that you just did that. Thank you and good job. If not for GOD, not the United States, Israel wouldn’t have stood a chance.
If it’s true that the Ultra-Orthodox can’t perform their duties because they put religious considerations above mission requirements then they’re just dead weight and failure waiting to happen. They’re lack of dependability rivals the high probability of Muslim U.S. soldiers turning on their fellows at the worst possible times.
Neither minority should be within those respective armed forces.
You clearly don’t know what “orthodox” means in this context.
Which is pretty normal for you, as you’re a leftist troll and constantly post garbage.
Most of Israeli Jews are “orthodox”. Reform barely exists there.
The word you are looking for is “Hasidic”, and a specific subgroup thereof.
The poster BWISTK is a leftist troll, probably a Travis County freak show and constantly posts leftist antisemitic garbage.
