WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. (Gray News) - A Florida convenience store owner is facing charges after police say he chased down and ran over a 14-year-old boy who he believed had tried to break into his store. The victim later died.
Hunter Russey, 14, was found unresponsive in a ditch last Tuesday after he was hit by a car, according to West Melbourne Police. His family made the decision Saturday night to take him off life support, at which point he died from his injuries. Hunter’s family gave police consent to share their son’s identity and provided photos of the teenager that police used in a news release.
Police say 32-year-old Kavan Vishnubhai Patel is now facing a second-degree murder charge in the case. He is accused of chasing down and intentionally hitting Hunter, who was riding an e-bike, because he believed the 14-year-old had burgled his convenience store.
Police say Patel reported a possible burglary at his store around 4:30 a.m. last Tuesday. Officers arrived on the scene within four minutes, where Patel told them he had gotten an alert from the alarm company and seen through the surveillance system that the glass on the front door had been broken. He also reported seeing someone leaving the area on an e-bike.
While investigating, officers learned that before they arrived, Patel had allegedly chased after that person – later identified as Hunter – and hit him with his car, WESH reports. Patel allegedly told police he was going about 30 mph when he hit the teenager, knocking him off his e-bike.
“He continues to follow him, doesn’t call law enforcement, doesn’t notify law enforcement that this is going on and, at some point, runs into the bicyclist trying to stop him,” said Lt. Graig Erenstoft, a West Melbourne Police spokesperson.

Slightly disproportionate.
I suspect that’s justice in whatever non American, American hating country he is a citizen of
Yes. In Kansas, a woman just ran over a man and a boy, and she is free as a bird.

Cuffed store owner and victim.
Vishnubhai is in deep doo-doo.
Kavan Vishnubhai Patel…….The United States of America no longer belongs to free born, free bred Americans, I believe they are close to being or are the minority..
Has as neutral 3rd party conducted an inventory of the store’s merchandise? What does the owner think was stolen?
Is it missing from inventory? Did the deceased have any retail items in his pockets that day? Just asking the uncomfortable questions.
Why was the kid out and about at 4:30 in the morning? How many other ppl on e-bikes were also in the area at that time? The kid was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but as the old adage goes, “nothing good happens after midnight.”
What’s a 14 YO doing out at 4:30AM riding around on an e-bike?
Fry the Indian bastard anyway
DWI - driving while Indian.
Even if the answer to all of those is yes, you can't ram his bike with a car and leave him in a ditch.
Will the boy’s family sue for the millions he would have stolen during a life of crime?
Fart Around, Flatten Out.
doesn’t look 14, not current picture?
14 YEARS OLD???
4:30 AM
NOT A GOOD MATCH
None of these questions are of legal significance in this case.
