Vance says Microsoft is being suspended from program to apply for green cards for H-1B visa workers

The Trump administration is suspending tech giant Microsoft from a program to apply for green cards for workers who come to the U.S. to live and work using an H-1B visa.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s administration is suspending tech giant Microsoft from a program to apply for green cards for workers who come to the U.S. to live and work using an H-1B visa as it accuses the company of fraud.

“If you do the math, for every worker that Microsoft laid off, they replaced that worker with one and a half foreign indentured servants,” said Vice President JD Vance in a White House news conference announcing the decision.

The H-1B program has long been a target of Trump supporters who say that the program undercuts American workers and is rife with abuse.

H-1B visas are meant for high-skilled jobs that are difficult to find American workers to fill. Technology companies are the biggest users, with nearly three-quarters of approvals going to workers from India.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Vance announcement came one day after Trump’s Republican administration launched another broadside against international students and their ability to work in the U.S.

The Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday proposed a $70,000 fee for international students seeking to work in the United States. The proposed rule would require schools to pay the fee for every student who participates in the Optional Practice Training program, known as OPT, which allows students to work in jobs related to their major during or after their time in school.

Microsoft does it. And is obvious about it.

But every US company which hires workers through H1-B is depriving an American of a job. The whole program should be cancelled.

If a brain surgeon from a foreign country wants to come to America and practice medicine, I don’t think they are dependent on the H1-B program. The idea of the program is to import cheap labor that undercuts American workers who want (and deserve) a truly decent salary.

“...that are difficult to find American workers to fill”

Bull scat. They don’t want to pay an American wage.

It’s about time. Spent 20 years in IT and saw this first hand. There is no need for H-1B as there are plenty of US workers here to do the work. The company I retired from had practically turned into a miniature Mumbai.

Pass a law to allow an American worker to sue for the place held by a H-1B visa holder.

We are seeing it here and to boot we have an offshore consulting company. We spend 25-40% of our time fixing things they commit overnight.

As an older Electrical Engineer I have worked most of my career side by side with these H1b workers. I get paid decently but not near what it should be.

I think a class action lawsuit may be in order.

Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella

Asian representation has grown by 0.3 percentage points to 35.8%, and has grown by 3.9 percentage points since 2018.

Probably even higher now. I'll leave you to ponder how many of those Asians are from the subcontinent.

It also kills our pipeline. Why go into engineering if the jobs will either be exported or the workers imported. I am an engineer at the end of my career. I have worked in IT and seen the waves of mostly average skill set brought in. Not brain surgeons or rocket science levels. I did well but started over 40 years ago. My nephew just graduated engineering and is struggling to find a job. So, again, why take such a tough curriculum if the payoff isn’t there any longer.

That’s a big issue all around, especially for young people. Who is going to be willing to put in the “10,000 hours” it takes to get good at something, if AI is just going to do it?

As an unrelated and complainy aside about Microsoft...

Does anyone else think that the Microsoft company should be sued for the annoyingly assertive ONE DRIVE program that (if your not scrupulously careful) will scoop everything on your hard drive and move it to the online drive (exposed to who-knows-what). Then, it's a pain to get the files back onto your own (unsynced) drive without losing data files.

Bull scat. They don’t want to pay an American wage.

Obviously. That's all that program is for at least 97% of them. They were even claiming this crap during the Great Recession when tens of millions of Americans were out of work.

Give it to Satya Gates Nadellaboombya good and hard.

Those freaks might give you 60 hours a week, but they are worthless outside of MS and the other primary H1B offenders: one, because you cannot harness that frenzy with anyone other than their own as manager; and two, they are all unicorn chasers and will jump from an established SaaS to vaporware without notice for nothing more than the promise of a few shekels more, or worse, a hilarious catfish on one of their dating apps.

If the American people knew how many Indian citizens are working American government jobs monitoring email systems and changing printer cartridges the whole program would be shut down by acclimation.

This is great news. Microsift has been a bead actor for years. Their scan 15 years ago was to only hire on short term contracts so the could fire no muss no fi=uss and avoid paying benefits.
The ethos of the tech nros in general seems to be maximum profit and control. Their employees are not treated like valued idividuals so company loyalty is in the cellar. That ethos works short term but dampens committment and willingness to excel.
‘You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain’.
I believe that somone working in good faith and putting the company aims foremost deserves to share in the good fortunes and been treated as a valuable player. The company sets the tone. If a respectful honorable climate is the corporate ethos there are gains personallu, professionally & on the corporate level. Employees who are unable or unwilling to function with this mindset may become redundant.

It would be a great double major in college. STEM and buggy whip manufacturing.
