NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — An ambulance is designed to save a life, but Wednesday night, one was called to Riverbend Maximum Security Prison after the State of Tennessee tried to end one.
The failed execution of Christa Pike, who was sentenced to death for brutally torturing and murdering 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville in 1995, has raised a lot of questions, including why prison officials called emergency medical services so Pike could receive lifesaving care after attempting to execute her just minutes prior.
Pike received two doses of the lethal drug, pentobarbital and survived on Wednesday. According to Pike’s attorneys, she’s in critical condition, receiving lifesaving care at the hospital.
“The first emotion I felt was shock,” Robin Maher, the executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, said. “We’ve never had someone survive an execution effort after receiving not one, but two doses of execution drugs.”
Tennessee has a strict set of guidelines, called its death penalty protocol, that it must follow when executing an inmate. The protocol advises the state to administer a second dose of pentobarbital if the first dose doesn’t result in death.
However, the protocol doesn’t tell the state what to do if a second dose doesn’t work.
“When that second drug did not work, it seemed like the staff were simply flummoxed. They didn’t know what to do,” Maher said. “That resulted in a flurry of activity, ultimately bringing emergency vehicles to take her to the hospital.”
In that moment, Tennessee’s goal switched from carrying out Pike’s death sentence to trying to save her life. It seems like a contradiction, but Maher told WKRN it was the state’s only option.[

Someone pull the plug on this murderer.
Pull the plug....
Protocol my butt, keep giving the person more until sentence is carried out.
Why couldn’t they just give her a third dose to finish things off.
This is God’s plan. We don’t know why. He does.

It is dead wrong to use hard earned tax dollars to collect preserve capital murderers in a exhorbitant prison zoo much less critical care. If you add up the man hours it took the state to carry out this whole farce (not just the botch), the state should be tried as an accomplice!
When an innocent unborn child is the victim of attempted murder and survives the protocol is to toss him/her in the sink and turn out the lights until death sometime after arrives.
If that is ‘ok’…. Why is it not ok in this instance?
These damned libs have plenty to explain on their judgment day.
“However, the protocol doesn’t tell the state what to do if a second dose doesn’t work.”
Easily rectified by adding an addendum to the protocol that instructs in the use of a $5 pillow over the face.
Poorly worded TN death penalty protocol that needs to be rectified.
Amen!
This will be the case that ends the death penalty in Tennessee and probably the entire country.
Amen!
It’s not a “penalty”. It’s JUSTICE.
Its hard to kill a demon.
What codswallop!
Punishment by death is unjust double jeopardy which is one reason for their constant failures. There is not a right way to do the wrong thing.
If society needs to be protected, put them is prison for as long as it takes. But it is no in man’s purview that which God already took care of with his Son Jesus on the cross and you don’t have to be religious to acknowlege this historical fact.
A .45 ACP would have been less expensive.
