Todd Waller wasn't expecting to spend the latter half of his 30s living with roommates. But in late 2022, following a breakup with his girlfriend, he needed to find a new place to live, quickly.
A social worker based in the Atlanta metro, Waller started googling "efficiency apartments" and stumbled onto an ad for PadSplit, a company founded in 2017 that lets property owners rent out individual furnished bedrooms in single-family homes by the week. "It said I could get approved right away and move in tomorrow," he recalled. There was no security deposit required.
All of a sudden, Waller found himself living with six other people and able to save a lot of money. His rent was just $180 per week, or less than $800 per month. Though he earned a decent salary, he never really had anything left over after all his bills were paid, and the new financial breathing room made the tradeoff of housemates feel worth it.

"Many advocates for people experiencing homelessness also argue that co-living is a needed solution... "
My city thinks that if you do so, you are subject to city rental and inspection regulations.
Sounds like the old days to me
Nothing novel about the concept of "room mates".
Transient uses of property, such as Air B n Bs, damage traditional single family neighborhoods. Zoning regulations used to prohibit them, but city planners these days have no balls, and don’t do anything about it.
MY FIRST HOUSE COST ME $25,250=PAYMENT OF $161 (PITI)
2ND HOUSE PAYMENT WAS $640 (PITI), BUT IT WAS 5 ACRES & 2553 SQ FT LOG HOUSE.
SELLING 2ND HOUSE PAID FOR 3RD HOUSE WHICH I PAID CASH FOR... IN MARCH 2005.
When I first moved to Boston in the 70s I stayed in Boarding houses -- $35 a week or so. Just a house with bedrooms and one kitchen on the first floor. No deposit. No lease. It was great. But real estate was taking off and the boarding houses kept getting sold and converted into Condos which sold for big money. I moved quite a lot.
A congregation of hobos next door sounds undesirable.

"There was living space for thirteen families in this one house!"
Trailer’s for sale or rent
Rooms to let, 50 cents
Or turns his bedroom into a crack house or a brothel?
“Zoning regulations”
Three out of five of my nearest neighbors are violating county ordinances.
People that have money and can pay big money often violate the laws.
I’m not one to complain.
I know from personal observation that Mexicans can have as many occupants as they wish.
The US doesn’t have “magic dirt”.
“Air B n Bs”
In Spain, one I stayed at was run by the son of a widow with two children.
I’m quite happy with AirBnB, except for their rather high cuts, which they no longer explain.
Remember, they could be charming raconteurs.
That seems like a lot of money for splitting it 6 ways.
There was a time when it was quite normal for multiple non-related people to live in a house where there was a spare room. It was not only normal, it was THE normal.
They tried to change it to make the “American Dream” (owning a home) THE norm.
That caused a host of problems that came to a head in 2008.
It is pretty Captain Obvious that was a terrible thing, begun by the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977.
The “American Dream” should for many people remain just that, to prod them to find a way to move up.
What has happened with housing prices (both renting and buying) is a terrible thing, but I do believe the situation will ease with the mass deportations, but it is going to take a long, long time for that to make a difference.
“I know from personal observation that Mexicans can have as many occupants as they wish.”
One local woman resorted to “Spanish for Law Enforcement Officers”.
The associated problem restaurant was torn down since.
We’d probably consider trading one or two of our empty bedrooms for someone to help us with chores, etc., around the property in our golden years.
