The family of a man who never attended Cornell University says it has faced threats and harassment after mistakenly receiving lawsuit papers intended for another Matthew Ingalls, a former student accused of participating in a fraternity gang rape.
The family’s home address appeared on the official court docket, helping online users target the wrong Matthew Ingalls, according to The Free Press.
Victoria Ingalls, the unrelated man’s mother, told the outlet she opened her door on Saturday night to find a man handing her a 101-page complaint intended for the other Matthew Ingalls, one of seven men accused of sexually assaulting a female classmate at the Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024.
An associate at the law firm representing the plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, told The Free Press that the firm was working with the court to correct the mistake.
But the family was already facing harassment. Online users had circulated names, addresses, and information about relatives of the accused men, including information belonging to the unrelated Ingalls family.
Victoria Ingalls’ 26-year-old daughter received both a photograph of the former Cornell student named in the lawsuit and a photograph of her own brother’s house.
Victoria Ingalls told The Free Press, “My family’s been terrorized, threatened, and harassed.”
She added, “I am just amazed at the way people behave. I can’t believe that people will just look someone up on the internet, take a phone number, and start texting someone or calling someone and saying the vile things they’re saying. You don’t even know if you have the right person. You’re creating more victims.”
The harassment comes as Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten has reopened the investigation into the alleged assault following the filing of Doe’s civil lawsuit.
In her complaint, Doe alleges she arrived at the fraternity house too intoxicated to consent to sexual activity. She says fraternity members pressured her to take ketamine, supplied additional alcohol and marijuana, and repeatedly sexually assaulted her.
The complaint alleges that one member sent a Snapchat message encouraging others to join and that men poured ketamine onto her body and snorted it. Doe alleges two men later moved her to another room and raped her before she lost consciousness around 5:45 a.m.
Three of the accused men have denied the allegations through their attorneys.
I hope the family sues the absolute s___t out of whichever members of the “internet mob” that they can find. This has to stop.
Sue the lawyer.
Unacceptable. The lawyers should be held in contempt and fined thousands..............
She’s as innocent as George Floyd.
They can’t even find the proper accused
That’s what a joke this case is.
I wish the FBI would go after those who threaten these families the same way they took two years to track down every J-6er they could find for punishment.
“1,500 people were arrested over J6 and were sentenced to an average of 2 years”
Meanwhile…..

If he has the same name and is a male he is obviously guilty and must pay.
Unless he is a Muslim.
Internet Mob Targets Wrong Family After Cornell 7 Lawsuit Mix-Up“
As if there is a “right” family.

At least this one is being taken care of. And it isn’t that bad. I was stationed at McChord in the 90’s, officially, and there was another NCO there with the same first, last, and middle initial and I kept getting his dental exam orders. This happened about every 90 days and I had to go into the clinic and “bring it to there attention” for almost a year. All they had to do was look at the service number which obviously they didn’t and sent out orders to orderly rooms. So this also meant I had to go to my command section and justify why I wasn’t going. And they finally told me to take care of it as they were too busy to be doing this over and over. My last encounter at the clinic was not cheery one.

After renting to a man for 33 years and never raising rent, I did raise it. He was paying $325. a month for a 3 bedroom house on the water. I raised it, and local people went nuts about it. I refused to read their opinions. People go nuts today.
Let me guess: he trashed the house on his way out.
I’ve have amazingly bad luck with rental properties.
When SunnyHostin defends the frat brothers you know this is all CaCa from the beginning. Just $$ grabbing and stirring up hatred .
These appear to be only slightly better than Crystal Magnum-level accusations.
The Revolver article pulls together a lot of good info / quotes / texts.

I wonder if Letitia James will be hiring Mike Nifong to assist in the prosecution.
This isn’t as dumb as Senator Eric Smidtt’s unforced error a couple day ago...
Identify and sue these people.
This story was posted on social media and a bunch of people in the thread said he and his family still deserved it for “not speaking out.” How are you supposed to speak out about something you were not around, weren’t involved in, and knew nothing about? Others claimed he was in fact involved and this story was an attempt at “deflection.”
Evil. Sue them all for defamation and harassment, emotional distress, etc. and charge them for terroristic threatening. This will not stop until people are held accountable one way or the other.
Exactly. You may not be able to identify all of them, but you can identify a lot of them - they must be held accountable or this is not going to ever stop.
Even after this error was confirmed, there are still people saying online he and his family deserved it because he did “not speak out.” Others are still claiming he’s involved and this story is “deflection.”
