Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has named Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the country’s first female prime minister and the second-woman ever in the Arab world to serve in the position.
The royal palace said in a statement on Tuesday that El Mansouri, a 50-year-old urban planning minister and the mayor of Marrakesh, was tasked with forming a new government.
El Mansouri said in a televised address her appointment was “truly historic”.
“For the first time in our country’s history, a woman is taking on the responsibility of leading the government,” she said. “This is a source of pride not only for me but for all Moroccan women.”
The appointment came four days after the results of last week’s elections were announced, with El Mansouri’s monarchy-aligned Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) winning the most votes to secure 97 of the 395 seats in the House of Representatives, Morocco’s lower house of parliament.
PAM fell well short of the 198 seats needed for an outright majority and will need to build a coalition in order to govern, which will be El Mansouri’s first task.
PAM, founded in 2008 by Fouad Ali El Himma, a friend of the king, has expressed its willingness to work with all parties. But some, including the Justice and Development Party (PJD) and Federation of Democratic Left, have announced they will remain in the opposition.
El Mansouri is one of Morocco's most prominent female politicians.
A lawyer by training, she studied at Mohammed V University in the capital, Rabat, before continuing her education in France and the US, specialising in business and corporate law.

Let’s just mention Gandhi, the nonviolent leader’s daughter Indira Gandhi had her political opponents rounded up by secret police, the most dangerous ones to her power were killed, and she had dissidents murdered during her ruthless reign.
Some women who become business CEOs in the US saw past men in power and assumed they should let their bloodlust loose to imitate them, even when the males were not actually all that way.
At my university I heard probably ten times from women: “I would much rather have a man as boss than another women. Men are always understanding and willing to give someone a break while women think they have to be dictators or look weak.”

Benazir Bhutto was a good prime minister of Pakistan. Everyone loved her. She went to universities in the US and UK, but the Islamist savages bombed her car and killed her. She was elected twice and ran a democratic government where she also championed women’s rights.
